Tom Selleck, 79, Hints at Next Project After ‘Blue Bloods’ Season 14: ‘I’m Going to Keep Working’

As season 14 of Blue Bloods winds down, it appears Tom Selleck already has his sights set on another possible project. The CBS icon revealed that he would like to revive one of his most popular characters — and it’s shockingly not Thomas Magnum.

It turns out, Tom, 79, would be interested in another stint as Jesse Stone.

“It looks like now I might have to write [a script for another movie]” he told TV Insider last month when asked about what was next for him after finishing filming Blue Bloods. “It wouldn’t be a final one because everybody loves it. Jesse is a great character, and it would be fascinating to find out where he is quite a few years later. But I need to regroup; I don’t know what’s next, but assuming the phone doesn’t stop ringing, I’m going to keep working.”

Tom has appeared in nine Jesse Stone films as the titular character. The most recent film in the franchise, Jesse Stone: Lost in Paradise, was released in 2015.

In March 2022, the Emmy winner was prompted with questions about if he was working on another Jesse Stone film.

“I’m still working on it! It isn’t the same cumulative narrative anymore,” he told TV Insider at the time. “As time has passed, I’m older and the Jesse Stone audience needs to account for that. He’s at a different part of his life. That’s interesting, but that’s not the script we started to do after we finished the ninth movie.”

“We have a deal with Hallmark Channel, but they’ve moved on to [other] shows,” he explained. “It’s saleable, and if it’s not on Hallmark, we could end up elsewhere. One of the first questions I always get from people I meet is, ‘Are we going to see another Jesse Stone?’ Yes, Blue Bloods comes up and Magnum and even Friends, but first, it’s, ‘Please do another Jesse Stone!’”

He also shared that he believed there was a continuity between Blue Bloods, Jesse Stone, his Western movies and Magnum, P.I.

“It was a lucky accident that my appetites were compatible with what the audience wanted to see me in again,” the Michigan native said. “That’s not often the case with actors.”

Blue Bloods will air its final episode on December 13 and fans of the actor would be thrilled to see him return as the badass detective in the Jesse Stone film franchise. More than a decade ago, he expressed that he knew right away that he wanted to play Jesse.

“I read ‘Stone Cold,’ from the late Robert B. Parker,” he said during an appearance on The Early Show in May 2011. “And I just said, ‘I got to play this guy.’”

“Jesse is so flawed, and he’s such a mess, and yet he’s a good guy,” he shared. “I just think people root for him and he’s funny. He doesn’t feel sorry for himself.”
