Tatsuki Fujimoto Might be Following in Hayao Miyazaki’s Footsteps After Look Back Becomes Eligible for Oscar Nominations

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has finally released the list of movies that are eligible for Oscar nominations this season. The list contains 31 animated features, 169 documentary features, and 85 international features. Out of these 285 eligible films, five belong to the Japanese anime art form, and the one that fans are most excited about is Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back.

Known majorly for creating Chainsaw Man, Fujimoto shocked the entire manga community when he released Look Back in 2021. The story was so intriguing that Studio Durian decided to adapt it into an anime film that was released in June 2024. And as expected, the anime film was also appreciated a lot by the fans and the industry.

Tatsuki Fujimoto is one of the very few anime creators who have been eligible for an Oscar nomination. It looks like he might be following in the steps of Hayao Miyazaki, the legendary Japanese anime filmmaker who has won not one but two Academy awards for his work.

The Love For Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Look Back

Look Back follows the story of two friends and their struggles to achieve their dream of being manga artists. They initially start as rival manga artists for their school’s paper, but circumstances lead them to become friends and work on manga projects together. However, things take an unprecedented turn, and their lives change completely.

Tatsuki Fujimoto has been acclaimed for his most popular work, Chainsaw Man, which follows in the dark fantasy genre. The series holds a lot of dull and bleak moments, which is why when Fujimoto came up with a coming-of-age drama, the entire community was startled. The one-shot was released in 2021, and it instantly gained a cult following.

Look Back added another feather to Fujimoto’s cap as it amassed a readership of 2.5 million readers on the first date of its publication and then went even further by generating over 4 million reads in two days. It was then picked by Studio Durian for an anime adaptation, and just like the manga, the anime film also earned a lot of appreciation.

Look Back Becomes Eligible for Oscar Nominations

Look Back was one of the five anime films that were recently declared eligible for an Academy Award nomination by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. This accolade certainly speaks for the love and popularity that Look Back has gained in a short time since its release.

The other four anime features are The Colors Within, Ghost Cat Anzu, The Imaginary, and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. Almost all of these films have been officially released and have been quite popular in the industry, but none of them compared to the reception that the Look Back anime film received.

While it is certainly commendable to become eligible for an Academy Award nomination, fans will still have to wait and see whether Look Back is nominated or not. Hopefully, the movie will not only be nominated but also win the Oscar award, which will help Fujimoto follow in the footsteps of Hayao Miyazaki.

Look Back is available to watch on Netflix.
