DRIVERS are bracing for a string of major road closures this weekend, with half a dozen of the nation’s busiest routes shutting down.

National Highways is urging motorists to plan their journeys in advance and expect delays and diversions.

The agency generally tries to schedule closures overnight on the weekends in order to minimise disruption to traffic, especially commuters.

But this does mean that anyone looking to travel over the weekends could find themselves facing extra congestion and long waits.

In its latest road closure report, National Highways has listed some of the most significant A-road closures set for the coming days.

Perhaps the largest is the A1 (M) in the North East, which run concurrently with part of the A1 in connecting London with Edinburgh.

On both Saturday and Sunday, the main carriageway will be closed southbound from J37 to J36 from 8pm to 6am.

This will affect the Marr Interchange just north of Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

Likewise, the A1 will also see a closure northbound from J65 to J66 as it passes through Washington on Saturday.

This will then reopen at 6am on Sunday before the same stretch closes in the opposite direction from 8pm Sunday to 5am Monday.

Elsewhere, the A14 will close westbound from J13 to J9 at 8pm on Saturday night, reopening at 6am the next day.

But there will be “limited local access” to the carriageway to allow drivers to move around the area of Northamptonshire that it covers.

Other smaller closures include:

  • The A259 from Mill Road to Tanyard Lane in West Sussex (Saturday)
  • The A36 at Warminster Road in Bath (Saturday & Sunday)
  • The A638 eastbound at Redhouse near Wakefield (Saturday)
  • The A2 from Eastern Docks to Duke of York roundabout in Dover (Sunday)

All of these will occur from 8pm to 6am, except for the A638 closure which will last to 5am on Sunday morning.

Full information on the reasons for the closures and any planned diversion routes can be found on the National Highways website
