The Maggie May hitmaker revealed that this is the end for his “large-scale” tours.

But added that he has “no desire to retire”.

Sir Rod said his next tour for the Great American Songbook and Swing Fever, which he released earlier this year with Jools Holland, will be in smaller and intimate venues.

The statement on social media read: “This will be the end of large-scale world tours for me, but I have no desire to retire.

“I love what I do, and I do what I love.

“I’m fit, have a full head of hair, and can run 100 meters in 18 seconds at the jolly old age of 79.

“I’d like to move onto a Great American Songbook, Swing Fever tour the year after next – smaller venues and more intimacy.

“But then again, I may not…”

He then signs the statement off with “The ambiguous Sir Rod Stewart”.

Fans left the singer some supportive comments after the announcement.

One person said: “Sir Rod, you have the right to do whatever you like!”

Another added: “As long as you keep doing shows, we will come and listen to you! Thanks for all the wonderful songs, a soundtrack to my life.”

A third commented: “Thanks for the memories Rod – all the way from the Glasgow Apollo in 1974 onwards. Looking forward to whatever comes next.”

While a fourth wrote: “Whatever you decide to do, Sir Rod, I’ll be with you all the way.”

It comes after Sir Rod had to cancel gigs in the US after being struck down with Covid in August.

He previously exclusively told The Sun how “my days are numbered but I have no fear” just weeks before he was struck down with the “summer” strain of the bug.
