2 weeks agoNews PlusComments Off on I was 34 weeks pregnant and thought I had pre-eclampsia – it was ‘aggressive’ cancer and now I have years to live
A MUM suspected she had pre-eclampsia when she was 34 weeks pregnant and her headaches got worse.
Bethany Wright, 26, went to get checked out for the pregnancy complication that causes high blood pressure – but a CT scan instead revealed she had cancer.
Bethany Wright thought she had pre-eclampsia while pregnant when her headaches got worse[/caption]
But a CT scan and MRI scan revealed she had a mass on a brain – a brain tumour[/caption]
Bethany was told she would need an operation to remove it, but after she had given birth[/caption]
The CT scan followed by an MRI scan confirmed she had a 6cm brain tumour, and doctors explained she would need an operation to remove it.
But she was told she couldn’t have the procedure while pregnant.
After giving birth to her son, Alfie, on March 28, weighing 5lbs 10oz at 2.35am, Bethany underwent surgery to remove the tumour in August 2024.
Doctors were able to remove 85 per cent of the tumour and sent it for a biopsy that confirmed that Bethany had a grade 3 astrocytoma – a fast-growing, aggressive tumour in the central nervous system.
After her surgery, Bethany underwent 33 sessions of radiotherapy and she is now undergoing chemotherapy.
Bethany said she feels “robbed” of motherhood and she has now started making a memory box for Alfie – fearing she won’t be around to see him grow up.
Bethany, a community nurse, from Glasgow, Scotland, said: “When they told me it was grade 3, I didn’t how to process it – I was wondering if I would have a shorter life span.
“I had just had a newborn son, I was trying to work out the future.
“My main thought was that I was not going to be able to be there for my son growing up which is heartbreaking.
“I am 26, I am still young.”
After experiencing severe headaches in March 2024, Bethany went to Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, as she worried she had pre-eclampsia.
Doctors took her for a CT scan which showed a mass on her brain.
Bethany said: “I told the hospital how was experiencing severe headaches and my blood pressure was high.
“They then did a CT scan as they thought I might have a clot in my brain and then someone from neurology came in and told me they spotted a mass on my brain.”
Bethany was taken for an MRI scan which confirmed she had a brain tumour but, because she was 34 weeks pregnant, doctors said she’d have to go full-term before they operated.
Bethany gave birth to her son, Alfie, on March 28, 2024, at Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh.
She said: “It was such a weird time because I felt as if I had all the exciting moments of the end of the pregnancy taken away from me.
“I felt like there was a negative energy around the pregnancy, nobody was able to focus on the fact I was having my first child.
“Everyone was just so upset.”
Removing the brain tumour
Bethany then underwent surgery on August 19, 2024, at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh to remove the tumour.
Doctors were able to remove 85 per cent of it but were unable to get the remaining 15 per cent due to its location on the right frontal lobe.
Bethany said: “After the operation, the tumour was sent for a biopsy.
“The results came back and said I had a grade three astrocytoma – I was devastated.

Bethany was then told she’d have three years to 10 years to live[/caption]
Her partner, Cameron and her mum, Lorraine have been by her side the whole time[/caption]
“I was told I could have three years to 10 years to live – it was hard to get my head around.”
In September 2024, Bethany started 33 rounds of radiotherapy and is currently undergoing 12 rounds of chemotherapy.
Bethany said: “I struggled with chemo, I was vomiting a lot, I wasn’t able to eat and I couldn’t keep anything down.
“I felt like I wasn’t able to do day-to-day activities which I struggled with as a new mum.
“It has been hard, I don’t think I could have done it without my partner, Cameron, 28, and my mum, Lorraine, 62, who moved in with us – so I can put my health first.”
Making memories for Alfie
With her memory box, Beth plans to fill it with letters and a voice recording for nine-month-old Alfie to listen to.
She said: “It has been super tricky, I feel like I have missed out on a lot as a mum, a lot of first-time mums go to classes with their babies and meet other mums.
“They are having the best time and I am not able to have that.
“If I think too deeply into leaving Alfie behind it makes me really upset so when I am with him I try to block it out of my mind.
“I have a memory box where I can write letters, there is a voice recorder in there too.
“I have started putting things into it but that in itself is a hard thing to do.”
The most common symptoms of a brain tumour
More than 12,000 Brits are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour every year — of which around half are cancerous — with 5,300 losing their lives.
The disease is the most deadly cancer in children and adults aged under 40, according to the Brain Tumour Charity.
Brain tumours reduce life expectancies by an average of 27 years, with just 12 per cent of adults surviving five years after diagnosis.
There are two main types, with non-cancerous benign tumours growing more slowly and being less likely to return after treatment.
Cancerous malignant brain tumours can either start in the brain or spread there from elsewhere in the body and are more likely to return.
2 weeks agoNews PlusComments Off on Grade II-listed home on sale for £875K leaves house hunters shocked at ‘grotesque’ feature – but would it put you off?
FROM the outside, a Welsh home on the market for £875,000 looks rather cosy and inviting.
However, house hunters have been left shocked at an unexpected surprise in the bathroom – a giant high heel bathtub.
From the exterior, this house in Conwy, Wales, looks rather normal[/caption]
However, house hunters have been left shocked at the bath tub which is shared like a stiletto shoe[/caption]
The unusual feature has been labelled as ‘grotesque’ by some internet users[/caption]
The quaint link detached cottage is located in the picturesque walled market town of Conwy.
Built in 1441, the Grade II listed four-bedroom, three-bathroom property is believed to be one of the only two medieval buildings within the town walls.
But believe it or not, that’s not the most interesting part about this £875,000 home, as reported by Luxury Property News.
Stepping inside, each room adorns original features and the interior has stuck to its 15th century-esque design.
In the main bathroom, however, there’s a huge surprise waiting.
No, it’s not a walk-in shower or a luxurious marble bathtub, but one shaped like a giant high heel.
Covered in purple and pink sequins, with a matching pink bow wrapped around the centre, it’s a shoo-in to provide the perfect soak.
And to give yourself a wakeup boost in the morning, splash your face with some cold water from the coffee cup shaped sink.
It’s truly a stark contrast from the rest of the home, which has left people shocked online, with some calling it “grotesque.”
Taking to Reddit, users have shared their reactions.
“I was not expecting that,” one person said.
Another user added: “Me scrolling through pics – like it, nice, oh yes, could see me here, love that bed, yes, nice, what the actual f**k?” [sic]
“It feels like one person got to do the bath and kitchen, and someone completely different got to do the other rooms,” someone else commented. [sic]
One user said: “What an absolute madhouse. I love it in its own way. You can’t say it lacks personality.”
Built in 1441, the Grade II listed four-bedroom, three-bathroom property is believed to be one of the only two medieval buildings within the town walls[/caption]
The rest of the home is fairly normal in comparison, including the sleek, modern kitchen[/caption]
The rest of the house, however, is pretty normal as far as historic cottages go[/caption]
The quaint link detached cottage is located in the picturesque walled market town of Conwy[/caption]
“How did they shoehorn that in,” someone else joked, to which another person replied with the pun: “Wooden shoe like to know.” [sic]
The rest of the house, however, is pretty normal as far as historic cottages go.
In the entrance, there’s an original wooden beam on the ceiling, with pristine white walls and flooring offering a contrast to the dark historic furnishings – such as a throne at the end of the table fit for a king or queen.
The living room has a rustic fireplace in the centre, with a gold and black regal storage chest competing as the main focus, coupled with a hand carved bench.
The Renaissance period windows are designed as such and offer natural light to peak through.
Another sitting room is slightly more modern with an electrical fireplace, though the theme of gold and black is still carried out.
The bedrooms look completely untouched from the historic past[/caption]
The other bathroom has a bold style too, with black walls and gold features[/caption]
The bedrooms look completely untouched from the historic past, with a dark wooden four-post bed, stone walls and original fireplaces, heavily patterned stained glass windows, beams and doors.
There’s also a small study, two basic en-suites, a cellar, attic room and empty space adjacent to the living room that’s perfect for entertaining guests.
Although, there are some other questionable features.
In one of the bedrooms, there’s a podium fit for a church with a staircase leading up to it integrated in, which overlooks the bed.
The other bathroom, while seemingly average, doesn’t fit in with the rest of the home, offering a black, reflective design and obscure shaped sink.
The owner has kept the old beams of the house[/caption]
And the kitchen is sleek, modern and colourful, with striking blue, red and yellow integrated cupboards.
Other “normal” aspects include the stone driveway, with ample parking, that’s accessed through a private entrance and an outhouse that could use some TLC, but is perfect for storage.
The furthest boundary wall in the garden is, in fact, a section of the original town wall and has steps that lead to superb views of Conwy quay and estuary.
Described as “fascinating and intriguing” by the estate agent, the property was completely gutted and renovated to a “most pleasing standard” between 2008-2015.
The home can be yours for £875,000[/caption]
And while it’s been done to a rather individual taste, its unique interior design offers a talking point and makes the home truly one-of-a-kind.
Just a stone’s throw away from Deganwy Vardre Castle, the historic quayside and access to the main high street from the front door, it’s got something for everyone.
And with rail lines to Holyhead, Bangor and London, it’s not cut off from the hustle and bustle of city life.
If you’re looking for a historically notable property with a splash of glamour, this home, listed by Dafydd Hardy Estate Agents, could be the one for you.
Home upgrades that add the most value to a house

VICTORIA Coren Mitchell revealed she was forced to re-record an Only Connect scene – after ‘spooking’ bosses with a controversial joke.
Writer and presenter Victoria, 52, has presented the notoriously difficult BBC quiz show since 2008.
Only Connect fans noticed a wardrobe mishap involving host Victoria Coren Mitchell[/caption]
Viewers noticed Victoria’s painted red nails in Monday’s episode[/caption]
On Monday (January 6), however, viewers were left confused by a strange wardrobe mishap in the episode’s opening.
In her introduction, Victoria quipped about using AI to generate more exciting opening remarks.
She read out: “It came up with this, ‘Good evening and welcome to Connect-Enders, a world of bitter rivalries and long-running feuds. Where devious characters are forever coming and going, amid a bewildering maelstrom of Byzantine promiscuity”.
While holding up her phone, viewers could clearly see Victoria’s nails were polished in a bright red.
However, in the next clip, she had bare nails despite wearing the same outfit.
Eagle-eyed fans soon noticed this, and took to social media to share their observations.
One wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “@VictoeiaCoren hang on, how long does it take to film a show.
“At the beginning you have red nails and then a few moments later they have gone #OnlyConnect.”
Another commented: “Watching #onlyconnect on delay and in @VictoriaCoren’s intro she has red nails holding the phone, yet later with the question cards, no nail varnish.
“The viewers of this show are far too observant and analytical to miss something like that continuity!!”
A third simply wrote: “Did anyone else notice Victoria’s nails?”
Meanwhile, Victoria replied to one of the posts with a possible explanation.
She wrote: “What was the intro?
“There was one where I had to record a whole different start on a different day because I made a joke about Strictly which spooked the powers that be.
She referenced an infamous joke about her having a crush on former politician Michael Portillo.
As the show ended the presenter – who is married toactor and comedianDavid Mitchell–said: “Coming up next on BBC Two is another episode in that wonderful series sponsored by the RSPB, where celebrities look after birds before handing them on to other celebrities to raise awareness of struggling avian numbers.
Hardest Quiz Show Questions
Would you know the answers to some of quizzing TV's hardest questions
Who Wants To Be A Millionaire – Earlier this year, fans were left outraged after what they described as the “worst” question in the show’s history. Host Jeremy Clarkson asked: “From the 2000 awards ceremony onwards, the Best Actress Oscar has never been won by a woman whose surname begins with which one of these letters?” The multiple choice answers were between G, K, M and W. In the end, and with the £32,000 safe, player Glen had to make a guess and went for G. It turned out to be correct as Nicole Kidman, Frances McDormand and Kate Winslet are among the stars who have won the Best Actress gong since 2000.
The 1% Club – Viewers of Lee Mack’s popular ITV show were left dumbfounded by a question that also left the players perplexed. The query went as follows: “Edna’s birthday is on the 6th of April and Jen’s birthday falls on the 15th of October, therefore Amir’s birthday must be the ‘X’ of January.” It turns out the conundrum links the numbers with its position in the sentence, so 6th is the sixth word and 15th is the fifteenth word. Therefore, Amir’s birthday is January 24th, corresponding to the 24th word in the sentence.
The Chase – The ITV daytime favourite left fans scratching their heads when it threw up one of the most bizarre questions to ever grace the programme. One of the questions asked the player: “Someone with a nightshade intolerance should avoid eating what?” The options were – sweetcorn, potatoes, carrots – with Steve selecting sweetcorn but the correct answer was potatoes.
“I have so enjoyed watching big names on BBC Two passing their feathered dependents on to other presenters, so I decided to join in myself.
“Tonight, I will be eagerly taking several swallows from Michael Portillo. Goodnight.”
Taking to social media, one fan said: “Somewhat traumatised by @VictoriaCoren parting shot on #OnlyConnect tonight!!”
Only Connect airs on BBC Two and iPlayer.

RUTH Langsford is planning a “divorce party” to signal the end of her marriage with Eamonn Holmes.
According to reports in The Mirror, the Loose Women anchor has insisted “life begins after divorce” as she allegedly prepares to mark the end of a life chapter with her nearest and dearest.
Ruth Langsford is reportedly planning a ‘divorce party’ to signal the end of her marriage to Eamonn Holmes[/caption]
The Sun was first to report how the former This Morning anchors were pushing for a ‘quickie divorce’[/caption]
Eamonn has since moved on with new girlfriend Katie Alexander[/caption]
The pair’s terms for their split came to light following their shock break-up last May, and it seems the mum of one is ready to call time on the heartache with her close pals.
Ruth’s rep has declined to comment on the claims.
The Sun now understandsRuthis keen to stay in the couple’s £3.5millionSurreymansion as part of her divorce settlement.
Yet while she is attempting to keep normality in her life, the ITV broadcaster appears eager to switch things up, too.
A source previously claimed Ruth – who has her own range on shopping channel QVC – is using shopping as a form of “therapy.”
They added to Heat Magazine: “Ruth’s sass is definitely back.
“She’s ready for new adventures, and who knows, a man – if and when, it’s on her terms.
“For now, girls’ nights and piña coladas are filling the void.
“Ruth has a force field of friends – they’re her armour and they give her great advice.”
A source previously told The Sun of former This Morning anchor Ruth and Eamonn’s divorce arrangements.

1997-2002 – To be respectful to Gabrielle, the couple kept their relationship out of the limelight. Ruth told Daily Mail: “I thought it spoke volumes about the sort of man he was, the sort of father he was and the integrity he had. It made me love him more, not less.”

December 2021 – After a year of being moved to the bank holiday presenting slot, both Eamonn and Ruth left This Morning.

A FITNESS club has produced a waterproof suit collection which allows wearers to seamlessly transition from their workspace to the swimming pool and back again.
David Lloyd Clubs produced the garments following feedback from members who said they struggled to fit exercise into their busy daily routines.

Allowing flexi-workers to go from desk to pool and back again on the busiest back to office week of the year.[/caption]
Helping members fit more wellness into their working days[/caption]
These photos show a chic professional moving effortlessly from lunchtime dip in the pool to tapping away on their laptop at a work station in the space of just a few seconds.
The waterproof ‘Swim Suit’ collection has been made from specialist water-resistant, hydrophobic fabric, with each garment taking more than three weeks to create.
Designed to allow busy hybrid workers to go from desk to dip and back again, slickly helping members fit more wellness into their working days, the collection could be made available to the public soon, based on demand.
A spokesperson for the health and wellness group said:
“More and more members are basing themselves from our work stations and dipping in and out of the pool, gym, group classes, or padel courts throughout the day, making work life much more balanced.
“Pockets of wellness throughout the day make all the difference to our overall wellbeing, but trying to fit everything in can be tricky, so any little help to make the most of your time can make a big difference.
“The 20 minutes or so to get ready and showered after exercising can eat into your day. Now, you don’t even need to think about it – you can be straight out of the pool and back at your desk in a matter of seconds.”
It comes as a poll of 2,000 office workers found they spend an average of four hours and 35 minutes a week in meetings.
And 80 per cent spend up to five hours straight in back-to-back meetings – eating into a large chunk of their day.
A massive 81 per cent admit they try to avoid these types of meetings where possible but sometimes can’t help but get stuck in them.
Not only that, but people are also having to work an average of three hours and 15 minutes outside of their contracted employed hours.
This means almost half (47 per cent) have had to skip their fitness and wellness activities due to their work schedule.
Of those who exercise, just 18 per cent do so on their lunch break, with half opting for after office hours.
In fact, 40 per cent said they would feel guilty taking part in exercise during work hours.
While exactly two-thirds said they would love to take part in more fitness and wellness activities if their job didn’t get in the way.
And 70 per cent think workplaces should encourage people to take breaks to prioritise their wellness during office hours, the research by OnePoll.com found.
The most popular forms of exercise enjoyed by office workers include running (20 per cent), swimming (12 per cent) and yoga (nine per cent).
A David Lloyd Clubs spokesperson added: “The pressures of work and family commitments can be overwhelming and it is hard to carve out time to look after ourselves.
“Rather than starting the new year with unrealistic goals, it’s more beneficial to form healthy habits that integrate into our lifestyles, improving wellness over the long term.
“Wellness doesn’t have to mean long stints in the gym or pool.
Studies have shown that short ‘snackable’ bursts of activity – as little as 10 minutes throughout the day – can be incredibly effective for both our health and productivity.”
