Greedy touts will be banned from scooping up tickets and flogging them at inflated prices under new plans

TOUTS will be banned from hoovering up tickets and reselling them at wildly inflated prices, ministers have revealed.

The clampdown will also consider outlawing dynamic pricing which ripped off Oasis fans last summer.

They were stung as they tried to secure seats for the Gallagher brothers’ reunion by ever-rising prices as tickets became scarcer, as well as profiteering resellers.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds confirmed a cap on resale prices to stop touts scooping them up before flogging them at vastly increased rates.

He is consulting the sector and considering limiting resales to the original ticket price — although it could be as high as 30 per cent more than the original face value.

That is still much lower than the typical 50 per cent mark-up fans pay on resale sites.

The competition watchdog found that touts fleeced fans for £350million last year through reselling 1.9 million tickets.

New legislation will also cap the number of tickets someone can buy through primary retailers to stop touts bagging loads.

Resellers will have to get a licence and breaching the rules will result in a £5,000 fine.

Curbing ticket touts was an election pledge by PM Sir Keir Starmer, revealed by The Sun.

Mr Reynolds said: “All too often big events have been dogged by consumers being taken advantage of by ticket touts.

“These unfair practices look to fleece people of their hard-earned income, which isn’t fair on fans, venues and artists.”

DJ Fatboy Slim said it was “great to see money being put back into fans’ pockets instead of resellers”.

Rip-offs will end

By Jonathan Reynolds, Business Secretary

WE’VE all been there. Counting down the days. Furiously refreshing your browser to bag your spot in the queue.

And after the stress of entering your details comes the euphoria of securing tickets to see your favourite artist or sporting final.

But too often, greedy ticket touts make the process unfair and difficult.

Today, we’ve announced action to clamp down on these touts and make buying tickets cheaper and fairer.

All options are on the table, including limits on resales and caps on resale prices to stop rip-off merchants inflating costs.

This isn’t just about cracking down – we want to make it easier to pass on tickets safely, fairly, and at a reasonable price so more people can enjoy live events without lining the pockets of profiteers.

Fans also face sudden price hikes. Dynamic pricing can mean cheaper tickets but often lack transparency, leaving fans confused and paying inflated costs.

The bottom line? Ticket-buying should be simple, fair, and affordable.

Exact date major railway sale is BACK is revealed – with more than 50% off advance & off-peak tickets for six-days

Avanti West Coast train, train ticket, and passengers using self-service ticket machines.

MORE than two million train tickets will be discounted during a promotion starting next week, the Department for Transport (DfT) has announced.

Thousands of popular routes across almost all UK train operators, including Transport for Wales and ScotRail, will be offering discounted tickets with journeys spreading the length and breadth of Great Britain.

Cheaper Advance and Off-Peak tickets will be available to buy in the rail sale between January 14 and 20.

They will be sold for travel across Britain between January 17 and the end of March.

Passengers in Liverpool could visit London for as little as £7, a journey from Preston to Edinburgh could be as cheap as £8.40, and a ticket from Nottingham to Manchester could cost less than a tenner.

Examples of price reductions on typical Advance fares – which are the cheapest tickets and must be used on specific trains – provided by the DfT include:

  • From London to Newcastle down from £52.10 to £23.60
  • From Nottingham to Manchester down from £18.50 to £9.20
  • From Glasgow to Inverness down from £28.10 to £14.10

Sale tickets will be available on a limited basis. The only operators in Britain not participating in the sale are Hull Trains, Lumo and Merseyrail.

The DfT said passengers saved around £5.8 million during a similar scheme a year ago, when more than 600,000 tickets were sold.

This was worth £5.1 million in fares revenue and resulted in “an extra 440,000 journeys taken by train”, according to the department.

The DfT added that it “tasked the rail industry to deliver an even bigger sale” for 2025.

The sale delivers on the government’s commitment to put passengers at the heart of rail services and to raise living standards as part of the Plan for Change so working people have more money in their pockets.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: “I’m launching the biggest ever rail sale so more passengers can get big discounts on train tickets to visit destinations across the country.

“Whether you’re planning a getaway or wanting to visit friends or family, this sale offers huge reductions on all sorts of journeys.”

The rail sale comes as the industry is marking the 200th anniversary of the world’s first passenger train service, when the Stockton and Darlington Railway in north-east England opened on September 27 1825.

Jacqueline Starr, chief executive of industry body the Rail Delivery Group, said: “Over two centuries, rail has become a vital part of the UK, shaping the economy and lives of millions.

“The year’s rail sale will offer over two million discounted advance fares, which is a great way to save on your travel and celebrate 200 years of railway connections.”

Train fares will rise across England from March 2.

The DfT set a cap of 4.6% for increases in regulated fares, such as season tickets on most commuter journeys, some off-peak return tickets on long-distance routes and flexible tickets for travel around major cities.

The level of unregulated fare rises is decided by operators, although these are likely to rise by a similar amount as their finances are closely controlled by the DfT.

No announcements on fare rises have been made by the Scottish or Welsh governments.

Shadow transport secretary Gareth Bacon said: “One week of cheaper tickets, while Labour gives their union mates inflation-busting pay rises.

“This is little compensation for the passengers who have endured 42 days of delays under Labour, or the chaos over Christmas caused by their ‘no strings’ agreement with the unions.”

How to get cheap train tickets

Inflation is pushing up the cost of everything, so there’s never been a better time to know how to save.

And that includes your train tickets – you might just be spending more than you need to.

We’ve rounded up some of the ways you can save money on your rail fare as prices continue to rise.

How can I reduce my train ticket prices?

National Rail offers a third off train fares that are standard anytime, off-peak, advance and first class advance for those aged 16 to 25.

You can buy the railcard annually for £30 or as a three-year card for £70, but if you regularly travel by train, you’ll make up this cost in no time.

If you regularly travel with a child aged five to 15 it could be worth looking into the Family & Friends Railcard, which gives you a third off most adult fares and 60 per cent off kids’ tickets. It can be used by up to four adults and four children.

There’s also the Two Together card, which costs £30 for the year, and offers a third off any standard and first class anytime, off-peak and advance fares if two named adults are travelling together.

What days are train tickets the cheapest?

If you’re a regular commuter, it may be worth looking into an annual season ticket.

National Rail says if you’re making the same journey for three or more days a week within a week, then a seven-day season ticket is likely to save you money.

You can use National Rail’s free online calculator to help you work out the cost.

Is it cheaper to buy train tickets in advance or last minute?

Network Rail releases its timetable 12 weeks in advance, so ticket firms usually make their fares available at this time.

The earlier you book, the less you’ll pay for your seat so don’t hang about if you know you’re going to be travelling over the next few months.

You can use National Rail’s future travel chart, which shoes the furthest advance date that you can buy tickets, as well as the Trainline’s ticket alert system, which notifies you when advance tickets go on sale for your journey.

National Rail’s website also has a cheapest fare finder which gives you the lowest possible fare across all train operators.

There’s also websites such as RedSpottedHanky, Trainline and Megatrain but these all charge a booking fee.

Is Trainline cheaper than National Rail?

Well, that depends – when you buy a Network Rail annual season ticket, you could also qualify for a gold card if you’ve bought it in the south of England.

The gold card offers a range of discounts including a third off off-peak travel.

While you’ll have to spend a large amount upfront, there are ways you can spread the cost.

For example you could join a commuter scheme such as CommuterClub.

Instead of paying the fare in one go, you pay the company in instalments over the course of a year with the idea being that an annual season pass is cheaper than a daily or monthly one.

But keep in mind that these companies will charge you interest – so you’ll end up paying more than if you buy the annual season ticket upfront. CommuterClub, for example, charges 10.6 per cent.

Do Oyster cards make trains cheaper in London?

Train companies may offer special deals if you have an Oyster Card, but that depends on your journey. It’s worth downloading the app for free if you haven’t already to check what might on offer.

You can also use websites such as Trainsplit and Ticketclever to check how much journeys could cost.

TORTURED SOUL (2.55 Lingfield, nap)

He had loads in hand when scoring at Wolverhampton 11 days ago and is effectively 3lb better off at the weights because rider Jack Doughty can use his claim unlike that apprentices’ race. He likes this trip and track and clocked up a sequence of wins this time last season.

MONSIEUR BEAULIEU (1.45 Lingfield, nb)

Has a cracking record around here and went close again last time from a bad draw. He’s in a better stall today and can close from the same handicap mark.

H KEY LAILS (3.25 Lingfield, treble)

Had been threatening to win for a while and got his head well in front here last time out. A 4lb rise gives him every chance over the same trip.

BRUNEL CHARM (11.45 Lingfield)

Didn’t get much luck in running when third at Kempton last time. He is back from the same mark over a course and distance he likes.

BBC Radio 2 stars announces huge move as she’s snapped up by rival station

A BELOVED star of BBC Radio 2 has announced a huge move as she’s snapped up by a rival station.

Gaby Roslin will soon be joining Magic Radio to host a new weekend show, with the blonde beauty ditching the BBC and seemingly subtly snubbing her old radio station.

Gaby is now set to depart BBC Radio 2 after a brief stint

Gaby previously covered shifts on Breakfast at BBC Radio 2, with her famously filling in for Zoe Ball last summer.

Over the years, Gaby has appeared on several BBC Radio shows, with her often sitting in for famous faces who were absent.

In 2009 she sat in for Alan Carr on BBC Radio 2, with her also known for covering Vanessa Feltz and JoAnne Good on BBC Radio London.

In 2010, Gaby permanently replaced JoAnne as co-host of the BBC London 94.9 breakfast show and remained until January 2013.

She was then given her own weekly Saturday show, live from noon until 2pm, in January 2013, and a year later, she was moved to an extended Sunday afternoon show.

Gaby has also worked at Virgin Radio in the past when she filled in for Chris Evans.

But now the 60-year-old star is taking on a brand new project, with her gearing up to host a brand new show on Magic.

Saturday, January 25, will be Gaby’s first day at the iconic radio brand, with her set to present the 10am to 1pm show.

“I am so excited to finally be able to share the news that I’m joining the Magic Radio family,” she said, adding, “Literally an opportunity that couldn’t be missed.”

She went on to gush: “How lucky am I that I get to spend Saturday mornings with the fabulous Magic Radio listeners – finding out how everyone plans to spend their weekend and spending some time with them at the start of the best two days of the week.”

She also took to Instagram in a joint post with Magic FM, which sparked chatter from Gaby’s fans.

Many fans of the TV and radio star were quick to congratulate her, although others questioned if this was really the end of her Radio 2 journey at the BBC – with Gaby seemingly snubbing her old gig.

One fan asked: “Does that mean no more cover on R2?” to which she responded: “Hope you enjoy listening to @magicfm.”

She then snubbed Radio 2 again when another fan asked: “Congratulations. Does that mean you won’t be on Radio 2 anymore?” and she replied with: “Hope you enjoy the show.”

Other fans were overjoyed with Gaby’s new job, with one writing: “Yay! That’s a great match!! Xx.”

Another then said: “Congratulations @gabyroslin! She’s been at the top of her game for over 30 years!

Fellow radio legend Zoe Ball then said: “Go girl xxxx,” underneath the announcement post.

Magic Radio Content Director Paul Sylvester said of Gaby joining the team: “Gaby is one of Britain’s best broadcasters and we’re delighted to be able to announce today that she’s joining the Magic family.

“Alongside our current much-loved on-air team, and with Gok Wan, Nicki Chapman and Mel Giedroyc, also joining us in January, 2025 is set to be an exciting year for the station with much more to come.”

This comes after a huge shakeup was announced for BBC Radio 6 after a fan favourite presenter quit and announced an exciting new project today.

Today, Lauren Laverne announced she would be stepping down from BBC Radio 6’s Music Breakfast Show after six years.

On Instagram she confirmed: “I will be moving to mid mornings and the wonderful @maryannehobbs_ will start a new show later this spring.

“These transitions are always more emotional than you’d imagine they might be, and for me that is very much about the incredible team in pic 2 – who made it such a joy to host the breakfast show every day for the past six years,” she continued.
