Sebastian Stan is an integral part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it comes to the Captain America side of things. Having appeared in every Captain America movie since the first, Bucky Barnes might seem as synonymous with the franchise as Cap himself.
While it is well known that Bucky will appear in Thunderbolts*, his absences from the next MCU project, Captain America: Brave New World have not gone unnoticed. According to Sebastian Stan himself, his absence from the project can be pinned on one individual.
Sebastian Stan could have been kept out of Captain America 4 by Anthony Mackie
Sebastian Stan, speaking at the premiere of his show Pam & Tommy, revealed that his involvement in Captain America: Brave New World depends on one actor and one actor alone. He said:
While speaking to Extra, Sebastian Stan clarified immediately after that this was just a jest. Mackie and Stan have developed a close friendship, with Mackie even going out of his way to congratulate Stan for his Golden Globe win.
However, despite Captain America: Brave New World being billed as a direct sequel to Falcon and the Winter Soldier, it seems that Bucky will be nowhere to be seen in the film, directly making his appearance in Thunderbolts* this May.
Captain America: Brave New World could be hiding a secret Bucky cameo
Captain America: Brave New World has so far not shown Bucky Barnes in any of its marketing material. While it is unlikely that the character is going to show up in Captain America: Brave New World, it might be a little odd if the character does not show up in a film that is billed as a sequel to Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
The Winter Soldier is an essential part of the story of Captain America, but not having him appear in Captain America: Brave New World is going to make Sam Wilson’s tenure as Captain America that much more detached from Steve Rogers’ version of the character.
Captain America: Brave New World needs to stick its landing, given that the film is coming out at a tumultuous time in the franchise’s history. Despite the success of Deadpool & Wolverine, the MCU is still in an odd place with fans, which needs to fix itself if it wants Secret Wars to succeed.
Captain America: Brave New World hits theatres on February 14, 2025.
