Portraying the on-screen lovers in the iconic galactic saga Star Wars, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher also got involved in a brief affair. The actors kept their romance out of the limelight, but the late actress opened up about their relationship in detail in her 2016 memoir, The Princess Diarist.
Among the details about their affair and obsessively falling in love with her co-star on the set of the 1977 film, Fisher also reflected on her relationship with Ford at the time, revealing that the actor remained unresponsive to her even after she reached out to him shortly before her passing in 2016.
Carrie Fisher’s heartbreaking recollection of Harrison Ford shortly before her death
Known for portraying the fiery Rebel Princess Leia in the Star Wars saga, Carrie Fisher opened up about her brief relationship with co-star Harrison Ford in her 2016 memoir, The Princess Diarist.
The actress, who was 19 while starring in A New Hope, had a three-month affair with Ford, who was 33 at the time and was married to his ex-wife Mary Marquardt, with whom he shares two children.
Describing her feelings for Ford as “unreciprocated love,” she reflected on what the actor thought of the book. Fisher revealed in an interview with The Guardian that she reached out to him before writing the book. She said,
I told him I was writing the book, and I would give it to him and if he didn’t like anything in it I would take it out, and he seemed surprised at that.
While Fisher sent a copy of the book to the Indiana Jones star, she never heard back from him. “Then I called him and said I’m going to send it to you, and I did and I never heard from him,” she said.
And she also revealed that despite his distant behavior towards her she still loved him. “I’ll always feel something for him,” she said.
Shortly after the release of her book, the actress passed away at the age of 60. While Fisher revealed that Ford did not discuss their relationship, he addressed her claims in the memoir in a later interview.
Harrison Ford addressed Carrie Fisher’s memoir
Carrie Fisher extensively opened up about her affection for Harrison Ford. However, the actress also acknowledged that he is known for being quite private, especially regarding his personal life.
“I don’t think he wants anything known about his life,” she said before adding, “And he’s lived it accordingly.” However, despite his reluctance to discuss personal matters, he did address Fisher’s memoir in a later interview with GQ.
“It was strange. For me,” he said when asked about Fisher’s memoir. The actor also admitted having advance warning about her revelations “to a degree.” However, he denied discussing any specifics, as he revealed that he had not read the book.
Oh, I don’t know. I don’t know. You know, with Carrie’s untimely passing, I don’t really feel that it’s a subject that I want to discuss.
While the actress eventually opened up about her relationship and the emotional complexities she experienced, she also revealed that Ford never discussed their relationship, even after they reunited while filming The Force Awakens.
Fisher’s memoir and Ford’s indifferent stance on the matter have left a bittersweet and melancholic undertone to the beloved on-screen romance between Han Solo and Princess Leia, impacting Star Wars fans who remember them as the iconic couple.
