Speaking with Esquire, the actor revealed how he got hooked on the best wine that he could get, which usually came down to the actor having 2 bottles of the stuff on the regular, over a single day. The actor said:

I would clean up, go back to work — I could do both. However many months of shooting, bang, it’s time to go. Then, boom. Three months of wine, then time to go back to work.

The actor put a stop to the drinking when he was filming Flight, the core themes of which looked at the evils of alcoholism and how it could affect the lives of those suffering from it.

The actor revealed that he was sure that he started drinking as soon as the film wrapped. Given that the film specifically looked at how a person could easily go down a spiral when it comes to drinking, it is possible that the actor had to come face to face with his own issues, which could have led him to leave the vice behind, along with health concerns that had popped up at the actor.
