Empowering Youth to Combat Impaired Driving Through Innovative Education and Awareness Programs

The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control has secured a $750,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety via the National Highway Safety Administration for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. This grant aims to educate teens, young adults, and the public on the consequences of impaired driving to reduce related deaths and injuries. The Department will manage this grant to help combat impaired driving.

The funding will support collaborations among students, educators, parents, prevention specialists, and law enforcement to educate youth on the dangers of underage drinking, driving under the influence, binge drinking, and alcohol abuse. The grant program is set to run through September 2025. Resources from the grant will be used to train college-age students to present the risks of underage drinking to peers, create a teen influencer YouTube channel to prevent underage drinking, and provide statewide presentations to parents about discussing underage drinking with their children.

ABC Director Joseph McCullough stated that this initiative aims to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving and underage drinking, sharing a collective goal of enhancing roadway safety in California. The Department works to protect communities through education and by running prevention and enforcement programs to increase compliance with California’s alcoholic beverage laws. ABC off-sale licensees and their employees are encouraged to participate in ABC’s online LEAD training, which stands for Licensee Education on Alcohol and Drugs, to improve compliance with these laws.
