Crucial motorway used by 130,000 drivers a day hit by string of closures over two months – check diversion routes
DRIVERS are being warned of overnight closures coming to the M4 that run until early March – with bosses advising those that are planning to travel to allow extra time.
The M4, which runs 189 miles from London to South Wales, terminating at Pont Abraham services in Carmarthenshire, serves around 130,000 drivers a day on average.
The M4 motorway is set for a string of closures in the coming weeks[/caption] Work will begin on certain sections that need resurfacing[/caption] In some instances, drivers will need to use a diversion route[/caption]But those who use the major route after hours will be facing nightly closures later this month.
National Highways have said they need to carry out resurfacing work on the eastbound carriageway – between junctions 14 and 15, near the Membury services – with work to begin from Monday, January 13.
From then, traffic will be restricted to one lane, with the hard shoulder also closed, for five nights.
Membury services will remain open for the first three nights, but entry will be closed for the next two from Thursday, January 16.
A full eastbound carriageway closure will also be in place between J15 and J14, starting on Monday, January 27.
This will last for a further 15 nights over the following five weeks.
Diversions will be put in place – including one specifically for HGVs.
Motorway traffic will be diverted by A419 northbound, B4192 Purley Road, Charnham Street, Bath Road, Eddington Hill and then by the A338 to rejoin the M4 at junction 14.
The HGV diversion will run from the A346 London Road, A4 Bath Road, Strongrove Hill, Charnham Street, Bath Road, Eddington Hill, then via the A338 to rejoin the M4 at junction 14.
During this period, drivers are being urged to pay attention to diversion signs and not their sat-navs.
Victoria Bathe, National Highways project manager, said: “We apologise for any temporary disruption this may cause but this vital resurfacing work will provide a smoother, quieter road for both drivers and communities nearby for many years to come.
“We plan our work carefully to minimise disruption and we are carrying out the majority of this maintenance at night when traffic is at its lightest.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank drivers for their patience and remind those planning on passing through this section of the M4 – or using one of our diversion routes – to allow extra time to complete their journeys.”
This comes as the exact date for when Britain’s “groundbreaking” new tunnel will open has been announced – and drivers should expect to be charged £4 each way.
Transport for London revealed the east London passageway as part of plans to reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the area.
However, it has not escaped controversy with some voicing their fears that more drivers will be drawn to the area, impacting air quality.
Elsewhere, this is the moment an £80,000 BMW spun out of control before smashing into a barrier on an empty road.
The luxury motor was left in tatters following the smash just outside the posh Cheshire village of Alderley Edge on Saturday.
Newly reunited UK indie band ‘nailed on as secret set at Glastonbury’ say fans after ‘clue’ in tour dates
MUSIC fans are convinced one noughties indie band are ‘nailed on’ to perform at this year’s Glastonbury Festival.
The Maccabees sparked whispers of a reunion in October and they have now confirmed they are back together and performing again.
Music fans are convinced Glastonbury will feature a secret slot from a 00s indie band[/caption] The Maccabees thrilled fans when they reunited at the end of last year[/caption]The five-piece band, fronted by Orlando Weeks, are already booked to headline a London music festival this summer, but fans think they could go one step bigger.
The Maccabees will be taking to the stage at All Points East in August and their army of followers are hoping they could pull a secret performance at Glastonbury out of the bag beforehand.
Writing on Reddit, one fan said: “They’re back and headlining All Points East in August, so thoughts on a Glasto slot – potentially a Bloc Party esq slot on other stage? Would be cool to see them play.”
Another person replied: “I would say 100% secret set. I would imagine if offered the chance to play…. they would not be able to say no!”
And a third chimed in: “Yeah pretty sure they’ll be there.”
And someone else added: “I am pretty sure they said that APE was their ‘Reunion’ show so it feels unlikely they will be at Glasto but you never know.”
The Maccabees split in 2017 after an impressive 14 years in the music industry.
At the time, the About Your Dress stars insisted there had not been a fallout and that they had just “run out of steam”.
Frontman Orlando told The Independent: “It was everyone knowing that that was what was going to happen.
“We’d had a difficult time making that final record and we’d reached the end of the line. It just ran out of steam a bit.”
But in October last year, the band sent fans wild after making a return to social media.
This year marks 20 years since the release of debut single X-Ray and their followers quickly realised a comeback was on the cards.
Alongside the band’s logo on Instagram, one fan exclaimed: “I CANNOT BREATHE.”
Another added: “Crying, screaming, throwing up.”
And a third chimed in: “The reunion I’m waiting for.”
The band later confirmed their reunion and forthcoming headline gig at All Points East.
“We’re very excited to say we are getting back together to headline @allpointseastuk on Sunday, August 24th – a bank holiday weekend,” they wrote.
The band added: “We’re looking forward to seeing you at Victoria Park. With love, The Maccabees x.”
Glastonbury 2025 - rumoured acts
THE Glastonbury line-up hasn't been confirmed - despite the fact tickets for the 2025 event sold out in minutes. Here are some rumoured acts.
Basement Jaxx sparked speculation they will be playing at Worthy Fam after leaving a “Glastonbury shaped gap” in their latest tour schedule.
It came after the hit duo announced their first live shows in 10 years – with gig-goers calling out a key “clue” in the order of their concert dates.
Yet acts including Olivia Rodrigo, Harry Styles, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan and Eminem are rumoured to be in the mix.
Canadian songstress Alanis Morrisette and Simple Minds have also been tipped to take to the stage.
The event will run from Wednesday, June 25 to Sunday June 29 for 2025.
The Sun previously revealed that pop icons Chappell Roan, Charli XCX and Olivia Rodrigo were all set to perform at Glastonbury next year.
They join The 1975, Stevie Wonder and Neil Young who are due to perform on the Pyramid Stage.
Rod Stewart has also confirmed he’ll be in the sought-after Legends slot on Sunday, something he called “the greatest honour” to the point he’s shilling out £300,000 to make sure the event is perfect.
Other rumoured additions include Fleet Foxes, who are on tour in the UK at the time of the festival, as well as rapper 50 Cent.

MARTIN Lewis has issued a warning to Facebook and Instagram users following a significant rule change by Meta.
The money-saving guru urged voiced his concern after the company’s head, Mark Zuckerberg, announced plans to eliminate fact-checkers and “reduce censorship” across its platforms.
Martin Lewis has expressed concerns over Meta’s recent policy switch up plans[/caption]The move would alter which information could be made public on Threads, Facebook, and Instagram, reports Birmingham Live.
Financial whizz Lewis says the policy switch up could leave people vulnerable to being “ripped off” by certain voices.
“This looks a seismic change. It affects all areas,” he warned.
“Focusing only on my work area though, having sued Facebook over scam ads in the past, is there’s no mention of scams here.
“Will this free up more people to be ripped off?”
In a video message, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, pledged to prioritise free speech following Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
He announced that he would “get rid of factcheckers and replace them with community notes similar to X”, starting in the US.
He also revealed plans to relocate the tech firm’s content moderation teams from California to Texas “where there is less concern about the bias of our teams”.
The move echoes a decision made by Elon Musk, 53, in October 2023, as the Facebook co-founder, 40, looks to cosy up to president-elect Donald Trump.
Musk has grown close to the 78-year-old in the last few months, having attended his rallies and hosted online “conversations” on his social media site, X.
And he has even managed to secure a position in Trump’s new government, leading the Department of Government Efficiency – designed to reduce spending.
In a video announcing the changes to his company yesterday, Zuckerberg said: “The recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point towards once again prioritising speech.
“We’re going to catch less bad stuff, but we’ll also reduce the number of innocent people’s posts and accounts that we accidentally take down.
He added that the third-party moderators had become too “politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they have created.”

And Trump, who has his presidential inauguration on January 20, hailed the “impressive” move, remarking that Meta had “come a long way”.
It came after Meta’s announcement on Monday that UFC boss Dana White, a close friend of Trump, had joined its board of directors.
White has previously spoken at a Trump rally and can often be seen alongside the former president at UFC events.
Dawn Alford, Executive Director of the Society of Editors, said Meta’s decision is a significant shift in its approach to content moderation.
“It underscores the critical role legacy media plays in ensuring the public has access to trustworthy, rigorously verified information.
“In an era where misinformation can spread rapidly online, the work of professional journalists in holding power to account and separating fact from fiction is more vital than ever.
“Fact-checking requires expertise, context, and independence—qualities that cannot always be guaranteed in a decentralised, user-driven model like Meta’s proposed community notes.”

‘Scandalous and s***’ – Raging Mike De Decker doubles down on PDC criticism after Premier League Darts 2025 snub
MIKE DE DECKER has labelled his omission from the 2025 Premier League lineup as “scandalous” and “s***”.
De Decker became the first player in the 20-year history of the Premier League to miss out on a place in the lineup after winning a major televised on Sky Sports.
Mike De Decker has criticised the PDC’s decision to not select him for the 2025 Premier League[/caption]The Belgian thrower won the Grand Prix on October and is currently number 24 in the PDC Order of Merit.
But that wasn’t enough to earn him a spot in the eight-man lineup with the PDC choosing to opt for Luke Humphries, Luke Littler, Chris Dobey, Nathan Aspinall, Stephen Bunting, Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price and Rob Cross instead.
De Decker hasn’t taken lightly to the news that he missed the cut and has furiously slammed the decision to omit him from the tournament.
Speaking to Het Nieuwsblad, he said: “I find their decision a bit scandalous, to be honest. I didn’t think that [the PDC’s] explanation was fair.
“After my Grand Prix victory, I said that I might not be ready and I don’t regret that. But afterwards I confirmed at other tournaments that I can compete with the world’s best.
“Only at the World Championships it didn’t work out. S*** and a shame that it happened then, but still. I do feel ready.”
De Decker didn’t stop there either, going on to take aim at Nathan Aspinall and Gerwyn Price being chosen ahead of him.
He added: “They did not deserve it. Suddenly they reach a quarter-final at the World Championships and they are there.

“Aspinall is there with his walk-on purely for the entertainment and if Price performs badly in the first few weeks, he will start complaining again.
“They say that you get into the Premier League based on results, but apparently that is not the case.”
PDC chief Matt Porter explained the decision to leave De Decker out after the announcement.
Speaking on Sky Sports, he said: “Mike is an outstanding talent and is someone that undoubtedly we will see in Premier League Darts in the future.
“We didn’t feel he was quite ready. There’s a lot of tournaments throughout the year.
“We’ve seen players in the past, I don’t want to embarrass by naming them, but players like Danny Noppert, Ross Smith and Andrew Gilding that have won TV tournaments.
“But you have to show that you can compete in the latter stages of TV tournaments on a regular basis.
“Doing it once is fantastic and is something that you will always have but to really be part of the elite, you have to be doing it on a regular basis over multiple years.”
Despite De Decker’s Grand Prix success, the 29-year-old did struggle elsewhere throughout last year and was a disappointment in the World Championship, losing in the second round to world number 35 Luke Woodhouse.
While there has been a pattern of major winners missing out on the lineup in recent years, but De Decker becomes the first one to win a Sky Major and fail to be chosen.
De Decker had already voiced his frustration at missing out on social media.
The star tungsten thrower uploaded an Instagram story showing an eye-roll emoji alongside the fact that he is the first Sky major winner to miss out.
While he also shared a story that read: “Once I don’t give af, there’s literally nothing you can do about it”.
