SWEET-toothed Scots could be left heartbroken as manufacturers have reportedly ceased production of a 100-year-old seaside treat – the ice cream nougat.
The wafer product is layered with a marshmallow and coated in chocolate – and is served either as a single or doubled up with ice cream like a sandwich.
But the last remaining supplier Waverley Bakery in Cambuslang, near Glasgow, has stopped making them reports STV News – sparking fears they will never return.
Waverley Bakery manufactures a range of ice-cream cones and wafers, including nougats and another sweet favourite oyster shells.
Crolla Ice Cream Co, who are one of the biggest wholesale ice cream supplies deliver half a million nougat wafers across Scotland.
They said they are trying to source a new supplier and have found a potential replacement from a company down south.
Ice cream boss Peter Crolla said: “It’s going to be a big loss for us, that’s why we’ve had to source them from somewhere else.
“We’ve found a supplier in England, but they’re a bit different.
“I only have 100 boxes of original nougats left, I’ve ordered two pallets of the news ones arriving next week.”
It is understood the new wafers are more expensive, flatter and have lighter chocolate.
Ice-cream parlour Colpi, in Milngavie, took the famous single nougat off the menu for the first time in a century due to shortages of the popular treat.
Manger Donald MacInnes told STV News they are one of their most popular products they sell and represent the heritage of the trade.
He said: “It’s a big blow and it’s a huge loss to our business; there’s nothing that can replace it.
“We know how much many of our customers cherish this wee Scottish delicacy.
“We’re praying it isn’t goodbye forever but for now they’re gone for good.
“We’re completely sold out of nougats.”
The last nougat was sold just before Christmas – and supplies of Oyster – another wafer treat – are limited.
Orkla Foods – who acquired Waverley Bakery in 2016 – have been approached for comment.
