THOUSANDS of hard-up pensioners could be eligible for support worth £300 this winter to help with the cost of living
Struggling households can claim support via the Household Support Fund.
Vulnerable households can claim support through the household support fund[/caption]
The scheme was originally rolled out in 2021 to help vulnerable people cope with the rising cost of living.
It has been extended many times, with the government promising to pump a further £1billion into the fund over 2025 and 2026.
Local councils pay out the money, and how much you get depends on your financial circumstances and what benefits you receive.
Now, thousands of pensioners in Shropshire could get support worth £300 this winter.
The money will help elderly households on low incomes who receive benefits such as council tax support or housing benefits but not pension credit.
This is because many pensioners who are not eligible for pension credit will miss out on the £300 Winter Fuel Payment this year.
It follows a decision by Chancellor Rachel Reeves to means-test the cash boost, which was previously available to all retirees.
Qualifying households in Shropshire can get access to a free cash grant worth £300 to help with rising bills this winter.
The council will be contacting eligible people directly so there is no need to apply.
However, if you think you could be eligible and are at risk of missing out, you can visit https://www.shropshire.gov.uk/.
Gwilym Butler, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for finance, corporate resources and communities, said: “The Household Support Fund has been a vital lifeline for many people in Shropshire.
“I’m impressed by how we have supported so many families and I’m grateful to our teams and partners who have delivered the grants and support to our local communities.”
What if I don’t live in Shropshire?
It is not only households in Shropshire which are eligible for Household Support Fund.
Some examples of what other councils are doing include Rotherham Council, which is now offering struggling families £250 grants to fight the cost of living.
Rotherham Council says that to qualify for the grant, residents must have no more than £150 remaining each month after covering essential expenses such as food, rent or mortgage, and utility bills.
You do not need to be on benefits to apply for the fund.
Meanwhile, The Sun previously revealed a full list of councils providing extra support for pensioners this winter through the fund.
Financial support available to struggling households varies from council to council, so it is worth checking what schemes your local council offers to ensure you get all the support you need.
The benefits you already receive will not be affected by applying for the HSF.
To get the help, you’ll need to check with your council – as local authorities are in charge of distributing the funding.
Household Support Fund explained
Sun Savers Editor Lana Clements explains what you need to know about the Household Support Fund.
If you’re battling to afford energy and water bills, food or other essential items and services, the Household Support Fund can act as a vital lifeline.
The financial support is a little-known way for struggling families to get extra help with the cost of living.
Every council in England has been given a share of £421million cash by the government to distribute to local low income households.
Each local authority chooses how to pass on the support. Some offer vouchers whereas others give direct cash payments.
In many instances, the value of support is worth hundreds of pounds to individual families.
Just as the support varies between councils, so does the criteria for qualifying.
Many councils offer the help to households on selected benefits or they may base help on the level of household income.
The key is to get in touch with your local authority to see exactly what support is on offer.
And don’t delay, the scheme has been extended until April 2025 but your council may dish out their share of the Household Support Fund before this date.
Once the cash is gone, you may find they cannot provide any extra help so it’s crucial you apply as soon as possible.
1 week agoLatest NewsComments Off on Millions of cars have dashboard button perfect for tackling snow & ice on roads – without using any more petrol
MILLIONS of cars have a button designed to help them tackle snow and ice, experts have revealed.
Brits are bracing for up to eight inches of snow today, with several weather warnings in place, making safe winter driving even more vital.
Motoring experts have revealed a dashboard button that can help you stay safe on snowy roads[/caption]
The white stuff has blanketed much of the nation and a trio of snow and ice alerts have been activated by the Met Office.
National Highways has also advised road users to avoid four major motorways, while several busy A-roads are closed thanks to the weather.
But if you do find yourself needing to venture out on the road during in wintry conditions, it’s vital to take as many precautions as possible to stay safe.
Motoring organisations have long been sounding the alarm about the risk of “black ice” in particular, but patches of normal ice and snow can still have devastating consequences.
The main issue is that both snow and ice reduce the amount of traction your motor can make use of, meaning you’re more likely to lose control of the vehicle and skid.
As a result, many car manufacturers have tried to mitigate this risk by installing some ingenious tech into their products.
Most modern motors now have some version of a “snow mode”, which can make all the difference on snowy roads.
This function is usually accessed by a dashboard button or by turning the selector knob in models with multiple driving modes.
In practice, it modifies several aspect of the drivetrain in order to provide better stability.
First of all, it reduces the amount of power available to the engine and the sensitivity of the accelerator pedal.
This makes it much harder to accidentally lay down too much power, which can send you into a spin.
The button also restricts the engine speed via the transmission and distributes torque more evenly to prevent the wheels from losing grip.
Owners of all-wheel drive models will feel the benefits of this most, but it is also effective for two-wheel drive cars.
Motoring experts from Otogo added: “We’d tell you to turn it on as soon as there’s snow or ice on the road… but not all vehicles were created equal and not all drivers are looking for the same sensations.
“The amount of snow and how slippery the road is can also have an impact.
“It’s a driver assistance system, and like most of them, its action can prove to be more annoying than useful in some cases.”
In terms of other winter driving advice, they added: “Avoid sudden moves when accelerating, braking and turning.
“Also maintain a greater distance with other vehicles and avoid using the cruise control in the snow.
“Finally, if your car has a manual transmission, start in second gear instead of the first to reduce the risk of skidding, and use engine braking to slow down before stepping on the pedal.”

COMEDIAN Jon Kenny was remembered as “remarkable” and compassionate during an emotional funeral service today.
The Limerick man’s family revealed the entertainer died in hospital in Galway on Friday surrounded by his relatives, a week after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Jon was best known for being one half of the d’Unbelievables with Pat Shortt and for his cameos on Father Ted.
Mourners gathered in his hometown to say their final goodbyes to the late comedian, including President Michael D Higgins and Taoiseach Simon Harris represented at the funeral by their aides-de-camp, and D’Unbelievables partner Pat Shortt, and a number of well-known comedians.
On Tuesday, his funeral service heard how Jon’s “compassion for his characters was the hallmark of his work”.
The priest also shared a clip of Jon performing on RTE’s The Late Late Show back in the late 80s, in hopes of showing the “larger than life” man that Jon was.
As the gifts were brought to the alter, among them were a guitar and poetry book to represent Jon’s love of the crafts, a Munster rugby and Limerick flag, and one of his many wigs from over the years, something which gave the congregation a much-needed giggle.
Unlike a standard funeral service, St Patrick’s Church in Lough Gur, Bruff, was filled with traditional Irish music throughout, from start to finish.
Giving Jon the send-off he would’ve wanted, The Mary Wallopers and Sharon Shannon played traditional tunes through the communion service, almost acting as a mini concert due to the amount of people attending.
Lifting the mood during the eulogy, broadcaster John Creedon shared some more light hearted anecdotes about his good pal.
He said: “To say he was a remarkable man would be a massive understatement, the Irish word laoch, meaning warrior, crossed my mind a few times over the last few days.
“He came into life charging, good days as well as bad days, he battled on gamely.
“He was always Jon, he was never anything other than Jon and the show always went on.”
‘HE BROUGHT COMPASSION’
He reminisced on a story of the two travelling to Prague, Czech Republic to see Cork City in an away game, where the comedy legend brought nothing but a jockey hat he found in his car boot on a four day trip – which he insisted on wearing for the entire flight.
Speaking about his comedy career, John said his good friend had a “marvellous gift” in a very “noble trade”.
He said: “Jon, he sprinkled that laughing dust everywhere he went.
“They always say the clown is the most sensitive person in the circus, that’s true, Jon had sensitivity.
“He brought compassion to all of his characters, in truth, Jon Kenny had compassion for all of us.
“It was that genuine depth of love and compassion for people that informed those remarkable performances and that remarkable life.”
Thanking his family for “sharing Jon” with the rest of the world, he reminded them how Jon would always be talking about them.
He added: “You know full well how much he absolutely worshipped you.”
FRANCE TRIP
Mourners also heard of how d’Unbelievables star enjoyed the best three months of his life holidaying in France before his passing.
John revealed how the Limerick man had spent the last three months of his life in France with his beloved wife Margie as he battled illness.
John told mourners: “I asked Jon if going to France was a good idea and he said sure it’s 20 degrees over there in October. He ended up having the best three months of his life. We only wished he could have enjoyed more of it.”
The RTE star revealed how Jon had been excitedly workshopping a brand new stage show which featured his own poetry and prose, a world away from his work with D’Unbelieveables or acclaimed stage work.
John said: “He texted me ‘I’m definitely on the road to somewhere with these poems. I want to make a world the audience can enter with me. It’s not stand up and it’s not a play. I don’t know what it is but I will when I find it’”.
His pal added that Jon didn’t need to find anything as he “never lost it, entertaining millions around the world.”
The RTE host also spoke of his hope that Jon’s poetry would now be published posthumously.
John said: “It absolutely must be published.”
‘HE ADORED PEOPLE’
Jon’s wife Margy also shared some words of thanks to those who stood by her husband and her family during the recent harder times.
She said: “I just want to say a big thank you to everybody who has come here today, everybody who turned up last night and in the last few days.
“It’s just kind of overwhelming, the outpouring of love for Jon that we felt everywhere and today, I feel it here so strong.
“Jon just loved people, he adored people. I was amazed by the fantastic time he had with everybody.”
CANCER DIAGNOSIS
Jon, 57, was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2000 and it returned in 2020.
In March, he opened up about his first cancer diagnosis during the success of d’Unbelievables.
Speaking to Oliver Callan on RTE Radio 1, he said: “It was tiring and wearing, but it was fun, and well, I nearly killed myself.
“I got cancer at the beginning of 2000 and I had no choice but to take a step back.
“Over the space of two years I was on different forms of treatment.”
Jon was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma in his early 40s but through extensive chemotherapy treatment he came out the other side.
He added: “I got a stem cell transplant, thanks be to God, they sorted me out and I motored on for another while.
“My cancer came back then about three or four years ago.
“I had an operation to remove my left lung and that was grand.”

HE’S been dividing viewers with his over-the-top reactions and excitable energy in the jungle.
Dean McCullough is on this year’s I’m A Celebrity[/caption]
He’ll be taking part in tonight’s Bushtucker trial[/caption]
The Radio 1 host received the highest public votes to take on the Sinister Sarcophagus challenge in a bid to win stars for camp.
And he will be left screaming his head off as he is covered in creepy crawlies in tonight’s episode.
While the actual trial may be hell for Dean, the air time will be a dream come true for the Belfast boy, who worked hard to get famous.
He has appeared on various reality TV shows, including Britain’s Got Talent, and was homeless when he first moved to London to make it big.
Dean has also opened up on his battle with booze and how going sober finally bagged him his dream job presenting Radio 1.
We reveal his rocky road to fame…
Homelessness
Dean’s life wasn’t all glitz and glamour when he was younger.
In fact, in his teens, his family were homeless for a year after his parents’ separation.
Dean McCullough with his mum[/caption]
He told the Big Issue: “We weren’t living on the street, we were living in my aunt’s house on a sofa.
“I was moving between houses on a regular basis.”
When he first arrived in London with hopes of being a musical theatre star, Dean was homeless once again, spending years couch surfing – and moving any time he felt unsafe.
Dean always wanted to be a star[/caption]
He said: “As soon as I sensed any kind of danger, I’d be straight out of [where I was staying]… for a long time I had no fixed address.
“I would go out on the Thursday and just stay out all weekend because I just didn’t want to go home.”
And he’s admitted this period of his life has left him with “problems with my possessions and feeling like I need to take care of absolutely everything around me”.
He added: “That comes down to moving from house to house and not ever feeling like anything was ever truly mine.”
Reality TV stints
During his quest for fame, Dean was part of all-male dancing group called The Glambassadors, who made it to the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2013.

The trio danced and lip-synced to Christina Aguilera’s hit Candyman – and judge David Walliams called the act “camper than Christmas”.
At the time, Dean said: “We formed because we all know each other through working in dance. But a week before the auditions we lost two guys who got jobs in LA.
“So we found two other friends and we had one rehearsal before we got to the stage.
“I choreographed the dance so I was under pressure to get it sorted. We were winging it but I think because of the pressure we were under it all came together and now I have made friends for life.
“We have all been on this journey together, none of us have ever done anything like this before.”
Two years later, Dean appeared on another reality TV show – Young, Free and Single.

The forgotten E4 dating show was hosted by Steve Jones, and involved six singletons living together in a house, while viewers voted on who they’d go on dates with.

Dean got loads of backlash online for how he treated one of his blind dates, Dan – unimpressed by his appearance, he decided to spend the whole evening on his phone instead.
Dean was “appalled” by his behaviour on one date[/caption]
“I was appalled at my behaviour on my second date but I’m glad it happened,” he told Attitude at the time. “It’s sparked massive controversy and people gave me their honest opinion – in abundance.
“Listen, I want to make the mistakes that single guys are afraid to.
“I want to prove that confidence doesn’t mean confident. I’ve learnt so much from that date and I hope you can see improvements in the weeks to come.
“I got annihilated and I deserved it.
I looked at my bins in my apartment and it was like, three bottles of red, a bottle of vodka, a bottle of prosecco, I was like ‘Who drank that? Oh, it was me.’
Dean McCollough
“I would’ve tweeted me and it wouldn’t have been pretty. It’s all part of the show.
“You could get ten amazingly positive tweets but it takes one negative to make an impact and yes – I had a cry but I’m learning and I thank every single person that gets in touch. I read them all.”
‘Dark place’
Dean got into a dark place with drinking as he got older[/caption]
After a lot of partying and dating, booze eventually became a problem for Dean.
Speaking on Scott Thomas’ Learning As I Go podcast, he said: “Alcoholism runs in my family and I’ve got a lot of friends that have been alcohol dependent so I just thought it was my turn.”
It was during the Covid-19 pandemic, while Dean was presenting the breakfast show on Gaydio, that he realised he was in a “dark place”.
He added to iNews: “What was like a glass of wine of an evening after work turned into a bottle which turned into two bottles and then, some weekends, I was drinking like a bottle of vodka too.
I had to dig deep and process years of trauma. It was so, so difficult at times but actually inspired me to stay sober and feel every feeling
Dean McCollough
“I looked at my bins in my apartment and it was like, three bottles of red, a bottle of vodka, a bottle of prosecco, I was like ‘Who drank that? Oh, it was me.’
“I just got myself into a bad way and I was sort of thinking some really, really dark thoughts to myself.

“Anybody who’s kind of struggled with mental health will know what it’s like.
“I just saw the path in front of me and it wasn’t nice. It was really dark and it was very destructive and I thought, if I want to get to Radio 1, which was always my dream, if I want to do that, I need to make some changes.”
4 years sober
Dean decided to stop drinking for a month on the first day of September in 2020 – and a month later he bagged a job at Radio 1.
After a month of sobriety, he got his job at Radio 1[/caption]
He has been sober ever since and, in September this year, he shared this picture of himself in Ibiza celebrating four years of sobriety.
He celebrated four years sober in Ibiza[/caption]
He wrote: “4 years sober today & the universe wanted me to spend it on my favourite island reflecting on the most incredible journey.
“I wanted to stop boozing for a month to refocus my mind and take back control of what was a spiralling problem.
“I wanted to go for my dream job at Radio 1 but had absolutely no idea how that was going to happen but what would happen next would be remarkable.
“Everything aligned, I stayed sober for another month and then Radio 1 happened, my mind opened up and I felt like me.
“The first year was the easiest, I stayed sober & the haze lifting, good sleep and no anxiety.”
However, he also opened up about how it’s not always been easy to stay sober.
He continued: “1 year in everything that was bubbling under the surface started to raise its ugly head. Trauma that I hadn’t processed, pain that I was running away from and parts of myself that I hadn’t given love began to stare me in the face. I had nowhere to run.
“I reached out and was sent to a psychotherapist. I had to dig deep and process years of trauma. It was so so difficult at times but actually inspired me to stay sober and feel every feeling. Anxiety, sadness, pain, regret, neglect, abandonment & the rest. I had to feel it all in order to move on.
“At the same time, my career is going from strength to strength, I’m now at Radio 1 full time, with my own weekend show, I’ve got an amazing team around me taking care of my career with me for the first time. Everything is coming together after 13 years of graft. My life finally felt like mine.
He’s been all over the world with Radio 1[/caption]
“In the last 18 months I’ve had a whirlwind of experiences. I’ve bought my own home & felt every bit of stress around that. I’ve fallen in love with the wrong person and had to navigate the breakdown of that. I’ve had a shift at work and navigate all of that.
“Sadly I’ve had family members pass away and we’ve all had to process the deep pain of that.
“During all of this, I haven’t wanted to drink or use drugs to hide the pain and in these moment that’s when I’m so grateful for sobriety.
“It’s not easy but as I sit here in Ibiza reflecting on the last 4 years, I’d rather have periods of pain and heartache and really feel it than keep running from my problems. That is life, this is sober magic and here’s to the next 4 years.”
