Controversial Wrexham star James McClean has special permission to break EFL rules for his own safety

JAMES McCLEAN has been given special permission to break EFL rules to avoid being abused by rival fans.

The Wrexham star, 35, regularly gets targetted by opposition supporters when he goes off the pitch.

Football laws since 2019-20 state a player being substituted must leave the field by the nearest sideline – rather than trudging over to the dugouts – to speed up play and reduce time wasting.

However, that has sparked a series of incidents with McClean clashing with supporters when taken off.

That included seeing a cup of Bovril thrown at him against Birmingham and he appeared to blow kisses at Mansfield fans earlier this month.

Now the EFL have stepped in to allow McClean and any other players at a similar risk an exemption to protect them from further flashpoints.

Having liaised with Wrexham and the PGMOL – the body of referees – the EFL have circulated a letter advising clubs of the measure put in place for stars – including but not exclusively the former Sunderland, Wigan, West Brom and Stoke winger.

As reported by the Daily Mail, the new directive came in an email to club safety officers as the EFL wrote: “You will be aware that James McClean is often on the receiving end of abuse from some sections of support.

“This has, in the past, resulted in FA sanctions against the Club due to the chanting becoming racially, or religiously motivated and therefore, classed as a hate crime.

“Missiles have also been thrown.

“It has now been agreed that on occasions in the future when Mr McClean has to leave the field of play, for whatever reason, he will leave by the shortest route towards the tunnel.

“This process will help to reduce these incidents and also help to manage Mr McClean’s departure from the pitch without incident.”

McClean has never shied away from controversy during his career and hit the headlines once again in recent weeks over his poppy stance.

The 103-cap Ireland international decides not to wear a poppy on his shirt in the fixtures leading up to Remembrance Day each year.

That is because his hometown of Londonderry – or Derry to Republicans – was the site of the 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre which saw 14 unarmed civilians killed by British soldiers.

And he feels wearing a poppy shows disrespect to those who died during the Troubles.

However, he has stated he would be willing to join the majority of footballers by having the red flower on his jersey if it was solely to show respect to those who died during the World Wars.

McClean stood apart from his Wrexham team-mates for the minute of silence before the 1-0 win over Mansfield.

The veteran helped Wrexham win promotion last season and was seen revelling in the Welsh club’s fans’ anti-monarchy song about him – just weeks after future king Prince William visited the Racecourse Ground.

McClean is, of course, not the only footballer who has been on the receiving end of abuse from opposition fans.

Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri taunted the passionate Leeds faithful in the closing stages of the Clarets’ win at Elland Road in September, leading to a furious reaction.

However, the ex-Manchester United man certainly played his part in the animosity on that occasion.

And the EFL cited the “racially or religiously-motivated hate crimes” surrounding McClean prompting the unprecedented dispensation.

But SunSport understands should other players be at a similar safety risk like McClean, they too would be subject to the relaxed rules for their protection.

I’m A Celebrity’s GK Barry is playing dumb but she’s in it to win it

DON’T be fooled by the screams. Self-confessed “young and dumb” GK Barry knows exactly what she’s doing to win I’m A Celebrity.

Let me be clear – before all of her fans start coming for me – I already believe she’s a worthy Queen of the Jungle… having given us screams, laughs and tears all within 24 hours.

Despite a massive social media following, the 25-year-old YouTube star doesn’t have the media-interest of Coleen Rooney or the old school star power of McFly’s Danny Jones.

But the quick-witted campmate, whose real name is Grace Keeling, is far from the dopey and naive youngster she’s so far portrayed herself to be.

GK Barry confessed on her most recent episode of Saving Grace: “I’m not going to cope well. I’m someone who’s terrified of everything.

“I hate animals… Why the f*** am I going to Australia?”

However, within the same 46-minute video, Grace told how she was left “really upset” when she failed to make the cut for last year’s I’m A Celeb line-up.

She even went as far as to bring up winning – telling fans she’s avoiding cooking in camp because “I’ll kill everyone.”

Grace added: “Everyone will get salmonella, then I’ll win by default.”

She also begged: “Please vote to keep me in.”

After finally get the call-up, Grace spent the first episode screaming like a banshee, claiming “I hate this show” – before even setting foot in camp.

Then, as if by magic, she was able to deliver a killer performance in the Vile Volcano Bushtucker trial when her new famous mates’ food was on the line.

The performance was as funny as a stand-up routine – telling herself to “grow up” as she navigated snakes, rats and cockroaches in a small space.

Without doubt, she’s got what it takes to go all the way after going into second favourite with the bookies.

However, she needs to ditch the game plan brilliantly played by the likes of Helen Flanagan and Gillian McKeith.

Yes, showing fear gets you the air time and attention to stand-out from the nine other campmates, but playing dumb about the Wagatha Christie case in front of the woman herself? Even her fans aren’t falling for it. Let’s face it. Like all of us, she wanted the tea.

Read our exclusive Bec To The Jungle daily column

Every day, Rebekah will be sharing her thoughts on the I’m A Celebrity camp with The Sun readers in an exclusive video diary and column.

She’ll be telling stories from her time in the jungle, sharing her completely unfiltered thoughts on the cast and nominating a villain every morning after the show.

From her take on Coleen Rooney’s Bushtucker Trials to what she thinks of stars who swerve the stomach-churning challenges, Rebekah’s column will be unmissable – and only available on thesun.co.uk

Follow The Sun’s Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat or YouTube channels so you don’t miss out.

One viewer wrote on X: “GK Barry is a smart cookie. She doesn’t have fears, she just knew what to do to get exposure and air time.

“Don’t underestimate how clever she is, she is manipulating the viewers.”

The I’m A Celeb superfan’s podcast took off in the Covid pandemic as she divulged wild tales and laugh-out loud moments from her daily life on Saving Grace.

Her relaxed interview technique has attracted a whole host of high-profile stars as guests, from Katie Price to Alan Carr who she brilliantly disarms with her casual attitude.

It brings out the best and most entertaining side of her interviewees – and it’s by no means an accident.

Too often, women are made to feel bad for having ambition.

I’d love to see the REAL Grace who’s not afraid to say she goes for what she wants and she gets it – whether that’s a hugely successful podcast series, getting onto I’m A Celeb or bagging a footballer girlfriend.

It’s time to ditch the scaredy cat cliche in the jungle and show us what she’s really made of.

Who is GK Barry?

GK Barry amassed more than a million followers on TikTok in just over a year during the first UK lockdown in 2020.

Grace Keeling, better known as GK Barry, is a 25-year-old social media influencer.

She rose to fame during the first Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, creating a TikTok account and posting short vlogs showcasing her day-to-day life.

Although she originally intended on staying low-key, she gained a large following in no time at all.

By August 2020, only five months after starting her account, she had already hit 100,000 followers, reaching more than a million in just over a year.

She now has over 4.5million followers across her social media platforms.

After completing a degree in film studies from Nottingham Trent University, Grace furthered her education with a master’s in digital marketing.

While at Nottingham Trent, she worked on the set of BBC series Doctors and the Netflix film Hood, as well as creating content for ShawMind — a charity working to promote mental health awareness.

Grace is known for her podcast, named The Saving Grace Podcast.

On the show she invites celebrities and influencers to have a chat about life and the latest trends, as well as any embarrassing stories from their past.

In May 2024, Grace said she was dating a female footballer.

Then in June it came out that the soccer star in question plays for England.

The Sun revealed that Grace and Charlton Athletic striker Ella Rutherford, 24, are getting serious — they’ve met each other’s family and holidayed together.

A source exclusively told The Sun: “GK has been seeing Ella for a while but they are very much official now.

“They grew even closer on holiday in Benidorm and GK has met all her family.

“She’s really happy and they are having so much fun together.”
