4 days agoLatest NewsComments Off on Wedding bells rang a change in Vaclav Cerny and Rangers’ winger has opened up on his happy ever after at Ibrox
VACLAV CERNY is living proof that a happy wife is key to a happy life.
The winger didn’t enjoy much of an Ibrox honeymoon period after his loan switch from Wolfsburg in the summer.
Missing a gilt-edged chance against Lyon didn’t help the relationship[/caption]
But they’ve taken him back into their hearts after a string of impressive performances[/caption]
But as things began to settle off the park, they quickly improved on it.
After cutting through the Brexit red tape, Cerny wed his childhood sweetheart Denisa last month.
It immediately brought about some stability in his home life, allowing the 27-year-old to at last focus on his football.
And Cerny revealed: “We got married just before the last international break. It hasn’t been easy for my family, moving abroad and being outside the European Union. It brings its own challenges.
“But those things are all settled now and during that initial period I would say the people around me, which are few, really helped.
“My life outside of football is very simple really.
“It’s just being home with my family, and that’s definitely the most important thing which got me through the tough two or three weeks.
“But on the other hand, you need to be mentally prepared for that because in football it’s one week you’re there, one week you can’t be there, so it’s on the edge. The people here in the club, all the guys, all the staff members, literally everyone gave me the support.
“I just got through it and I want to keep this going now.
“It is always nice to have that family bubble.
“It depends on the person, on the player himself, but that’s what helps me and I’m just glad I had this experience, but also very glad I got through it.
“I don’t think it’s only in football, it’s in life in general.
“Tough situations make you the person you are.
“How you react to them just shows your character, and also shows the people you have around you.
“I have to say again, the club, the family, in the end that’s all that matters.”
Cerny signed a season-long loan deal in the summer. But he’s now enjoying life so much in Glasgow that he wouldn’t rule out extending his stay beyond that period.
He added: “If it’s up to me, then I would be open to talk obviously, but it’s very soon to talk about that.
“If you don’t mind, just let me focus on helping the team and achieve what we want to achieve, me personally and as a club.
“We’ve got plenty of time to talk about this. But I am really enjoying it here.”
Gers are about to embark on a run of 11 games — up to and including Celtic at Ibrox on January 2 — that will make or break their season.
It all begins with a home match against Dundee United this weekend, with Cerny determined to put on a real show for the supporters. He said: “I would say every period is important for us.
It hasn’t been easy for my family, moving abroad and being outside the European Union. It brings its own challenges.
“But those things are all settled now and during that initial period I would say the people around me, which are few, really helped.
“It’s a busy schedule coming up, which is important, but we’re making steps. We know what we want and we’re just looking forward.
“Every game is about good performance and good results, so it’s always a mix.
“I always enjoy my football when I’m fit and when I’m on the pitch.
“I do relish it and just want to be part of the success of this club, so that’s what is driving me on.
“I know that it’s not easy to adapt quickly.
“But I just did my best and hopefully we can say the adaptation part is long over and behind us.
“Let’s focus for upcoming games and months and weeks. I hope there is more to come from me. That’s what I’m working on, to be more dangerous, more effective.
“The numbers are OK right now for myself, but you will never hear me saying something that I’m satisfied or anything like that.
“You will never hear that from me. So every day I can do something more or bring something extra, then I will go for it.”

BRENDAN RODGERS has hinted he could extend his Celtic stay beyond 2026.
The Hoops boss reiterated his promise to see out his current three-year Parkhead deal.
Brendan Rodgers announced he’d stay for three years when he returned to Celtic – and vowed to win over his critics[/caption]
He was given a warm welcome by biggest fan Patsy Cullen when he reported back last year[/caption]
The Hoops boss re-iterated his timescales – and put OFF all talk of a new deal beyond 2026[/caption]
But Rodgers, who has handed right-back Alistair Johnston a new long-term contract until 2029, admits he could be open to talks next term.
He said: “On my first day back, I said I’d be here for three years. By then, I’ll have done nearly six years at the club, and that’s a long time as Celtic manager.
“For nearly a year, more people wanted me out than in, so I’m not going to be talking about new contracts now!
“I just need to continue to work well and do my very best for the club.
“I’m pretty sure at some point next season, we can see how we’re going and take it from there.
“But at the moment, I love my life here and it’s an amazing club to work for.
“Going away and then coming back has made it even better for me because I knew what I had missed when I was away. So I’m not in a rush to leave again.
“They say that as you get older the biggest currency you have is time. When you get to 51 and you get older, you realise that.
“Time with the people you love and your family, your workplace, I’d have to agree with that.
“Where I am at the minute, though, I’m in a brilliant place, so keep it that way.
“I’ve always felt really comfortable here.
“My driver has always been the constant improvement and development of the club.
“That’s the big aim again this time, and we see that happening and I want it to continue happening for a long time, hopefully.”
4 days agoLatest NewsComments Off on Inside Alistair Johnston’s crazy career from live TV transfers to Dolly Parton’s hometown & signing new Celtic contract
ALISTAIR JOHNSTON’S crazy career background is like a story straight out of Hollywood . . . or Dollywood, to be more precise.
The Celtic right-back was a bag of nerves when he was sent to Nashville SC in the 2020 MLS draft.
But it worked out well and he eventually arrived at Celtic – and hasn’t looked back[/caption]
But Johnston reckons his move to the home of Dolly Parton and country music changed the course of his career.
The 26-year-old Canadian opened up on the bizarre experience of that MLS draft, after penning a new five-year deal with the Hoops yesterday.
AJ said: “It’s crazy to think that a lottery of a night with the draft changed everything.
“Maybe if a different team had picked me, I wouldn’t have had the chance to break through.
“Before you know it, I’m bouncing around the MLS without ever finding a home.
“You then don’t get to a place like Celtic, so I got lucky in a way with Nashville.
“The draft was honestly one of the craziest experiences.
“They set up a camera crew at my house and were filming it.
“There was a producer who had a 20-second head start on what was going on.
“I could see that he had every single team’s scarf lined up, waiting for the signal.
“Before I even knew who’d made the pick, he’d take that team’s scarf away.
“So I’d look over at him and say, ‘OK, the Orlando scarf got pulled, so I’m not going there’.
“Likewise, I knew that if he picked one up and held it, I knew I’d be going there.
“But he’d then be moving all the scarves around after a trade had happened, and I’m like, ‘This is insane’.
“North America is so big, meaning you could be sent to Vancouver, where I was born, away on the west-coast.
“But then the next pick is Miami, and you’re away down south-east with a totally different lifestyle.
“You’re constantly thinking, ‘What would my life be like there, there or there?’.
“Everything being so out of your control is really odd.
I’ve started saying ‘Aye’ all the time – multiple family members have brought it up
“I was eventually told it was Nashville, but leading up to that, you have no clue.
“It’s such an emotionally taxing experience. I was just happy I went 11th in the draft — I’m not sure I could have lasted if I went below 20th. It was crazy.”
Johnston embraced Nashville life, and after a stint at CF Montreal, he then joined the Hoops in 2022.
Two years on, he had no hesitation in putting down roots in Glasgow, and admits he loves Scotland, despite being cool on one of our national drinks.
Johnston added: “My fiancee Peyton is from North Carolina so she had already taught me the Southern ways.
“Nashville is just west so I was open to the idea of embracing the Southern charm.
“It took me a while to embrace country music, but after a while I got hooked!
“I’ve started saying ‘Aye’ all the time and multiple family members have brought it up.
“I’ve tried Irn Bru, which was OK, but the colour of it, you think that should be getting poured into an engine!
“I like a Scotch and my dad loves it, so I always have to have a nice bottle for him when he comes over.
“Golf is another one and we’ve got a good group here who like to play. I’ve played some courses that are way better than my skill level.
The couple have put down roots in Glasgow – and Johnston is now staying for longer[/caption]
He loves life in Scotland – but isn’t so sure about the national drink[/caption]
“I hacked it around Troon and Turnberry was a disaster, I lost 30 balls on the back nine!
“A lot has happened to me since I moved to Scotland.
“We got engaged at Turnberry and we got a dog, which is like starting a family in some ways.
“So we’ve set up quite a few roots here now and we’ve really enjoyed our time.
“That’s something that wasn’t lost on myself or my fiancee in terms of making this decision.
“It’s a place where we feel really comfortable and it wasn’t difficult to sign.
“The club wanted a new contract as a priority, and they made it clear they value me.
“You want to be part of something that feels important, and that’s what Celtic gives you.
Glasgow grannies and dog-walks in disguise
By DAVID OLIVER
ALISTAIR JOHNSTON says a ‘heavy disguise’ is part of his make-up every day in Glasgow.
The defender grabbed his 50th cap for Canada in the international break – another honour to add to his growing collection.
And the Premier Sports Cup could be next with the Hoops in the final against rivals Rangers in December.
It’s one Johnston is looking forward to against his club’s big rivals – one that takes a daily toll on his everyday life in Glasgow, even to the point of affecting how he walks his DOG.
He told the Canadian Press when he goes out “it’s normally under pretty heavy disguise” during the day time.
The right-back added: “In Nashville and Montreal I could walk through the streets and not get any abuse. Over here, every single person knows who you are and they either love you or they hate you,
“I’ve had my fair share of pep talks and scoldings from grandmothers on the street.
“The passion for the sport, it’s second to none.
“It’s something I’ve learned, that I’m not going to be there for ever so cherish it while you are there because it’s not normal — and it’s not normal to a lot of cities in the world and it’s not normal to a lot of players, no matter what club you play for.
“It’s definitely a unique experience but I’ve enjoyed it.”
“I have been lucky enough to be part of many in the last two years, and hopefully there are more to come.”
Still only 26, Johnston revealed he would never rule out ending his career at the champions.
He said: “I am not that far-sighted, but if you could stand the test of time and the demands at Celtic, that would be just unbelievably special.
“Only really a handful of guys can go out and do that. Callum McGregor and James Forrest are among the most decorated and legendary players here.
“It’s not often that happens but we will see.
“I have five more years, and hopefully I can do well enough that I can think of an extension down the line again.”
Celts boss Brendan Rodgers hailed Johnston’s personality, and insists the new deal is smartbusiness for all parties.
He said: “The club is really good at getting players committed to long-term contracts.
“It doesn’t always mean that they will be there for that length of time, but at least it protects the asset.
“Ali loves being at Celtic, and he has the voice and personality to be a success here.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time working with him.
“I can see his development and I can see him growing.
“He’s got so many attributes on and off the pitch that really help this team and this club.”
4 days agoLatest NewsComments Off on Storm Bert ‘two different impacts’ alert as weather warnings issued for the entire country
AS Storm Bert brews, weather experts have warned it will bring “two different impacts”across the country.
Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather warned there’s a “very wet and windy night and morning” ahead with a risk of flooding in south and west.
The weather expert said: “On the latest radar that the rain is starting to move into the southwest already, and so that is heavy rain starting to move in. It won’t be that heavy starting off. It is still quite cool.”
Storm Bert is “still developing and still deepening” as it goes through tonight.
O’Reilly said: “Warmer air is moving up, but as that rain meets the colder air.
“It will fall as snow for a time, especially on higher ground, and especially in parts of the north.
“So it will be snow turning to rain, but it will be heavy snow for a time.”
Met Eireann has issued a status yellow snow-ice and rain alert for Leinster, Munster, Connacht, Cavan and Monaghan in place tonight until tomorrow noon.
A status yellow snow-ice, rain and wind warning is in place tonight for Donegal until tomorrow noon.
A status red rain warning has been issued for Galway and Cork from midnight until 10am tomorrow.
An orange rain alert is in place from midnight until 10am tomorrow for Waterford, Kerry, Clare, Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim.
While a status yellow wind warning has been for Cork, Kerry, Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford and Wicklow from 5pm tomorrow until 2am Sunday.
As Storm Bert brews, temperatures will become milder.
O’Reilly said: “We are going to see two different impacts from it, rainfall and wind, and then more wind.
“So if we look here at the upper air temperature, you can see the milder air does come true.
“Now it’s not very mild air, but it is much milder than what it has been there.
“And that is going to bring a big rise in temperatures back up to 13C or 14C.
“We won’t feel it with the wind and the rain, but it is going to get milder.”
Met Éireann Weather Warning
Possible impacts:
Severe flooding Possible river flooding Very difficult travelling conditions Poor visibility
Debris, loose objects displaced Damage to homes & businesses Dangerous/treacherous travelling conditions
Voters on Friday may face more rain and showers.
He continued: “As the low pulls away then into Monday, you can see some cooler air, not as cold, but some cooler air for the start of next week.
“But it will probably turn milder again then in time for polling day on the 29th.
“A bit of uncertainty around Friday yet. There could be some rain, risk of some showers, but uncertain yet.”
The weather pro said over 80 millimeters of rain could fall in Galway, West Cork and Kerry and the mountains.
O’Reilly said: “The biggest issue with Storm Bert is definitely rainfall.
“So 24 hour period, the purples here means it’s very likely to happen.
“So if we look here, the whole country is going to see more than 20 millimeters.
“Most of the country is going to see more than 30 millimeters, many parts more than 40 and even more than 50 – you can see there, especially in the southwest and the west, but even over some of the mountains.”

POLICE probed a “hate” incident when a woman with an Italian surname claimed her neighbour hung dirty underwear on the line after England lost to Italy in the Euros final.
The record of the incident says: “Offenders have hung a very large pair of soiled underpants on their washing line.
“They have been there for over two months.”
Italy won a penalty shoot-out at Wembley in July 2021.
The alleged response — recorded by North WalesPolice though no offence had taken place — emerged in a Freedom of Information request.
Gwent Police, in South Wales, logged a case in which a man reported someone “calling me Canadian”.
It was unclear what his nationality actually is.
In Warwickshire, a suspect was recorded for refusing to shake a person’s hand, which was “perceived to be hate-related due to gender identity”.
The revelations come after The Sun told how City of London police recorded a “rough haircut” as a non-hate crime.
Other such incidents included a complaint in Cambridgeshire after a German woman was likened to a Rottweiler.
In the year to June there were 13,000 non-crime hate incidents recorded — where no crime occurred, but the person reporting felt they were targeted over hostility or prejudice.
Campaigners, former detectives and politicians have called for them to be shelved so police can focus on their job.
On Thursday, Essex Police dropped a hate probe into the journalist Allison Pearson over a year-old tweet after turning up at her home on Remembrance Sunday.
