My sister wants to call her baby Rafferty but I laughed in her face at the spelling – she booted me out the baby shower

IT can be hard to choose a name for your kids – and the one you pick may not go down with all your friends and family.

One woman shared how she was so shocked at the moniker her sister had chosen for her baby that she “laughed in her face”, and subsequently got banned from the baby shower.

Taking to Reddit, she shared how baffled she was at the name choice.

The name in question was Rafferty – but her sister had chosen a rather unusual spelling.

The woman explained: “I laughed at my sister’s Tragedeigh [nickname given to unusually spelled names] and now I’m uninvited to the baby shower I’m planning.

“She decided she wanted to use my mother’s maiden name (Rafferty) as her daughter’s name.

“Not a Tragedeigh itself and I guess it works as a unique name.”

She said how she had texted her sister about the name as she was going to order custom items for the baby shower.

The Reddit user continued: “My sister then let me know they’re going with an alternative spelling of Rafferty.

“My sister wants to spell it Raefarty.

“So I sent back a bunch of laughing emojis and she asked ‘What’s so funny?’”

The woman shared how she thought “no one will pronounce that as Rafferty” and will mispronounce it.

She added: “She told me I was being ridiculous.

“I texted back, ‘My poor niece, Little Miss Farty Rae.’

“I was uninvited to the shower and my mom told me today my sister doesn’t want me as the Godmother anymore.

“But, like, Raefarty is really bad, isn’t it? Someone needs to tell her, right?”

The struggle of choosing a baby name

CHLOE Morgan, a Senior Writer at Fabulous, has revealed her dilemma on choosing a baby name...

At 35 weeks pregnant, by far the trickiest part of pregnancy for me in the past few months (minus the insomnia and countless night-time wee breaks!) has been trying to decide on a baby name.

The dilemmas are endless…

My partner and I went for a private scan to find out the gender as early as we could – partly due to the fact we thought it would make baby naming so much easier because we’d only have to come up with a list of names for one gender rather than two.

How wrong we were…

I was absolutely thrilled to be told I was expecting the baby girl I’d already dreamed of, but being one of the last of my friends to fall pregnant, I’ve had countless conversations over the years with excited pals discussing their top baby names…something which I wish I could go back in time and un-hear.

With each friend mentioning at least 10 possible monikers, I can’t help but feel like several are now a no-go even though I know it’s something that none of them would mind in the slightest – it’s a total me problem!

The debate comes up time and time again on social media forums – can you choose the same name that was a “potential” for a friend’s baby?

It’s a very divisive topic and opinions are always mixed…and I don’t want to be THAT person.

While some will argue there’s thousands of other names out there to choose from, others will say you need to choose YOUR favourite…after all, there’s no guarantee that person will even have another baby.

Then there’s also the issue of finding a name you adore…only to research it online and read one negative comment amongst hundreds of positives that you just can’t shake off.

I made that very mistake when I fell in love with a certain name (I won’t reveal it because I don’t want to ruin it for others!) …only to see someone point out that it constantly gets autocorrected on a phone to something rather rude instead.

So, back to the drawing board we went..

Just five weeks to go and it looks like our little one is going to be known as ‘baby gal’ for a little while longer!

Many people agreed with her that the name would get unfortunately compared to wind.

One wrote: “I see fart… the bullies will have a field day.”

A second added: “Yup, it’s Ray Farty, no matter what sis wants to believe.”

A third commented: “I teach High school. She will be bullied RELENTLESSLY. Either spell it correctly or change it. It will make that poor baby a joke.”

‘Love this’ cry fans as RTE star gives major fashion hack to keep ‘secretly’ warm and shows off Prime Time outfit

Sarah reported live from Kilkenny yesterday evening for the hit current affairs programme.

The 43-year-old made sure to wrap up for the show as she had to stand outside for two to three hours but still “look sort of professional”.

The radio star took to Instagram to show her fans a video of her outfit and captioned it: “My tips for secretly staying warm.”

Sarah explained: “So the last time this happened, I got so cold. I was so cold I couldn’t even hardly ask questions. I’ve decided that’s never going to happen to me again.

“So these are my tips. It might look like I’m just wearing jeans and a jumper and a top but oh no, oh no – there’s much more than that going on.”

Sarah buttoned down her white belted trench coat to reveal another white puffy jacket underneath.

She raved over her little coat saying: “This is actually really handy. I got online for about €40 and it rolls up into a little ball and I actually use it all the time.

“It’s really really light but it’s feather and it just keeps you warm.”

Sarah wore a black polo-neck long sleeve jumper and yet another thermal top under.

The broadcaster also had two pairs of socks on and had two packs of hand and feet heaters in her pockets.

She explained: “So this [heating pad] is under my foot at the moment of my shoe.

“It’s like a little heat warmer for my feet and these are like little heat warming pads for my hands. My hands get really cold. I just put my hands in my pocket and I’ll be fine.”

‘LOOKING GREAT’

Sarah added: “So now if you happen to watch Prime Time tonight, you’ll know what’s really going on in the background.”

The mum-of-two’s friends and fans all loved her brilliant tips.

Mimi said: “You look fabulous on screen just now! I love those feet warmers!”

Another follower wrote: “Looking great, Sarah! I love layers too!!”

Matthew commented: “Looking at you on screen you’d never think you had so many layers on!”

Mark added: “Love this!”

Heartbroken loved ones of woman missing at sea vow to ‘keep pushing’ as search resumes & family hail volunteer response

THE heartbroken loved ones of a woman missing at sea off the coast of Co Galway have vowed to “keep pushing” until they bring her home.

The search for Máire Ní Fhátharta, 32, resumes today after she went missing after going for a swim at Silverstrand near Barna in Galway on November 12, just hours after singer Johnny Duhan was also lost at sea.

The body of Johnny Duhan was recovered from the water a few hours after he was reported missing and he was laid to rest on Friday following his funeral mass at St Killian’s Church, in New Inn, Co Galway.

Máire has now been missing for eight days after she went for her daily swim at Silverstrand Beach last Tuesday.

Searches have been carried out daily for the young woman, with a multi-agency operation led by gardai and involving the Coast Guard Service, Civil Defence teams and the RNLI underway.

Hundreds of volunteers have also taken part in the effort to locate Máire, with daily coastline searches assisted by kayak clubs, paddle boarders and local boat owners.

An online fundraiser set up to help cover the costs of fuel and search equipment has already raised almost €220,000, with the family pledging to donate any excess funds received to voluntary organisations that have been assisting them in the search.

In a post on social media, Máire’s loved ones vowed to keep searching until they bring her home and told how grateful they are for “endless strength and support” from volunteers and those praying she will be found.

It read: “Though the road has been difficult, your unstoppable efforts and dedication have been nothing short of inspiring. We plead that you all keep going for Máire.

“As together, we have proven that even in the toughest of times, we are stronger when we stand together.

“Your generosity, kindness, and determination to help us has made all the difference in our search for Máire.

“It’s in times like these that we truly see the power of community as well as the power of a good person, Máire was such a special person.

“She shared so much of herself with the people she loved. She was caring, hilarious, goofy, wise and driven.”

They told how Máire would be “so proud” to see groups of people out searching as then she could witness the amount of people she “impacted and touched” in her life.

Urging people to continue searching, the group said: “Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.

“We want all involved to know we are aware of your commitments to Bring Máire Home.

‘WE SEE YOUR DEDICATION’

“Services, volunteers, sharing posts, lighting candles, praying, helping with food, donations, everyone on foot and everyone out at sea.

“We see your dedication. We will be forever grateful.

“Let’s keep pushing and keep all of these efforts going and we will Bring Máire Home together.”

Speaking on RTE’s News at One, Máire’s sisters Maighréad and Fionnuala said they are not going to give up searching for her until she is found.

Fionnuala said: “Obviously when this happened we were in shock at first but we just had to do everything we could to try and find Máire again. The response we had was absolutely unbelievable.

“It has been the response from the community that completely overwhelmed us. We would not be where we are today, I know we’re still searching, but we have come on and every day we’re learning something new and improving our searches.

“Hopefully we will get a result very very soon.”

She told how it is “completely overwhelming” to see the scores of people volunteering to assist in the search at beach each day.

Fionnuala continued: “I’d say we’ve had up to 600 people in the daytime searches and 300 to 400 people or 250 minimum out there every single night in hard conditions, wet conditions and cold conditions.

“Without the people we wouldn’t be able to keep the hope we have now.”
