Tributes to ‘bright and joyful’ 11-year-old boy killed by car outside school as parents demand change to speed limit

MOVING tributes have been paid to a “bright and joyful” 11-year-old boy who was killed by a car crash outside his school.

Evan Rothwell was hit by a grey Nissan Qashqai outside Kings School on Wrexham Road, Chester, last Tuesday evening.

Evan died in hospital on Friday, November 15.

In a tribute from his family, shared by Cheshire Police, they said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm that our beautiful son Evan Rothwell has passed away as a result of the road traffic accident near King’s School last Tuesday.

‘Evan loved life and used his talents to entertain and bring joy to others.

‘Evan lit up the world around him when he was making friends laugh with jokes and magic tricks, playing cricket with his friends, performing with Ama-sing on Britain’s Got Talent and entertaining audiences as part of the Chester Scout’s Gang Show. He made us proud every day.

“We are shocked and devastated at his loss. We would like to thank the emergency services staff and the staff at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for their expertise, care and commitment and most of all for their kindness.

“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from our local community. We really appreciate your love and support.

“The speed limit on the road where Evan was hit is a 40mph limit. This road is outside a school, and we strongly feel that this needs to be lowered to prevent anything like this from happening again.”

Evan’s headteacher, George Hartley, said: “Evan will be forever remembered as a bright, joyful and fun-loving classmate, with an intellectual curiosity that belied his young years.

“Our thoughts throughout this past week have remained with Evan’s heartbroken family, loved ones and friends.

“This devastating news has shaken our school community to its core and there are immense challenges ahead for our pupils, staff and parents.

“We have drawn great strength from the many messages of support and from the countless tributes being paid to Evan.

“We are united in grief and shock, and we are doing all we can to support each other with compassion and understanding as we face the loss of one of our own.”

Antiques Roadshow’s Theo Burrell issues fresh health update amid cancer battle admitting she’s ‘really exhausted’

ANTIQUES Roadshow star Theo Burrell has shared a candid update on her battle with terminal cancer, revealing that she’s feeling “really exhausted” ahead of her next scan.

Theo was diagnosed with a grade four glioblastoma in 2021, and initially given just 12 to 18 months to live.

Thankfully she has defied the odds and is still going strong nearly two and a half years later.

Taking to Instagram, the 38-year-old shared an emotional post alongside a snapshot of Dalkeith Country Park.

She reflected on the challenges of the past few weeks, writing: “The last couple of weeks have involved a lot of down time and staying at home.

“I’ve just been really exhausted and needing sleep. I’ve ventured out at the weekends with the boys, but today is my first day out and about on my own in two weeks.”

Theo admitted she’s been battling high anxiety ahead of her next scan, fearing her brain tumour may be regrowing after her September results showed changes.

She explained: “My anxiety about my next scan has been very high but after days and days of worrying about every ache and pain I decided forgetting about cancer entirely (well as much as possible) was the only way forward.

“This time next month I’ll know whether I definitely have regrowth or (what turned out to be) the mysterious enhancement on my September scan is something else (scar tissue? necrotic tissue etc?).

“I’m hoping that having a plan will be slightly more reassuring than living in limbo – but who knows. Either way – hope, hope, hope x.”

Fans rallied to show their support, with one fellow cancer survivor sharing their advice saying: “Forgetting about cancer between scans is definitely the only way forward.

“I spent the first two years after diagnosis torturing myself whether it had come back or not. Now I try to forget about it and enjoy my life in the three months between scans.”

The brain_tumour_research Instagram account also offered words of encouragement.

They wrote: “We’ve got our arms wrapped around you during this challenging time. Sending strength, hope, and so much love as you navigate the waiting and uncertainty.”

Theo’s battle with cancer began with excruciating migraines, vision impairment, and severe nausea – which led her to get checked out by doctors.

Sadly she was diagnosed with a grade four glioblastoma, which is a type of brain tumour, back in June 2022.

The Antiques Roadshow personality went through surgery to remove 90 percent of the tumour, along with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

While the cancer remains incurable, Theo has resolved to cherish every day and make the most of her time with her loved ones, including her young son Jonah who was only one when she found out about her condition.

SKY has plugged a big gap on its TV guide with the arrival of five extra channels for some accounts.

Music lovers were devastated to lose a load of much-loved channels earlier this year, including The Box and Kerrang.

The five channels are now on Sky Glass and Sky Stream[/caption]

They – along with Kiss, 4Music, Magic – disappeared from TVs over the summer due to cuts by Channel 4, who operated the staple of channels.

The Box was the longest running of the lot, having been on-air for some 32 years.

This left a huge void in the music channel section of all TV service providers including Sky and Virgin Media.

But it was particularly noticeable on Sky Glass and Sky Stream, Sky’s internet-based alternative to the traditional satellite dish.

Sky Glass and Sky Stream don’t quite have as many music channels as Sky Q.

After Channel 4 closed its music channels down, only four were left all run by MTV.

From today, Sky Glass and Sky Stream will find five new music channels on their devices, taking the total back up to nine.

The full list of channels can be found below.

  • NOW 70s
  • NOW 80s
  • NOW ROCK
  • NOW XMAS
  • Clubland TV

As viewers may notice, the brands come from the classic NOW That’s What I Call Music compilation CD.

NOW XMAS is a temporary channel that’s usually called NOW 90s and 00s.

In the New Year, it will revert back to being NOW 90s and 00s.

The channels are available on Sky Glass and Sky Stream from today at no extra cost.

Here’s the full list of music channels now available on the platform:

  • MTV Music – 350
  • MTV Hits – 351
  • MTV Xmas – 352 (temporary name, reverts to MTV 90s in 2025)
  • MTV 80s – 351
  • Clubland TV – 354
  • NOW 70s – 355
  • NOW 80s – 356
  • NOW XMAS – 357 (temporary name, reverts to NOW 90s and 00s in 2025)
  • NOW ROCK – 358

More ways to get free music on Sky Glass and Sky Stream

If you’re still wanting more music on your TV, there are some freebies hiding in plain sight.

Xumo Play is an app on Sky Glass and Sky Stream that provides access to an extra 70 or so channels.

Among them is a host of music channels.

There’s also the Vevo app that lets you select and play music videos on demand.

Why have music channels disappeared?

Analysis by Jamie Harris, Assistant Technology and Science Editor at The Sun

Music channels were once the highlight for teens to catch iconic videos with MTV, VH1 and The Box among the many names on screens.

Who remembers paying a couple of quid to request a song? Only to wait ages for it to appear.

Those days are long gone thanks to instant internet access to any song or video you want.

And so with it, the music channels have slowly died off.

VH1 disappeared from the UK years ago, as did Smash Hits – then we lost The Box, Kerrang, Kiss, 4Music and Magic.

Despite dwindling numbers there is clearly still an audience for music video lovers on TV – even if it’s just background filler – with the expansion of the NOW channels.

Rafael Nadal breaks down in tears after last-ever match as heartbroken world of tennis says goodbye to legend

RAFAEL NADAL and the tennis world broke down in tears as the legend retired following the last match of his extraordinary career.

The Spanish superhero, 38, hung up his racquet for good on Wednesday following his country’s exit in the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga.

Nadal, who has struggled with injuries in recent years, was beaten 6-4 6-4 by Botic van de Zandchulp in the opening rubber.

And that proved to be the final match of his extraordinary career as despite Carlos Alcaraz winning his singles match, Spain lost the deciding doubles and were knocked out by the Netherlands.

So after 23 years as a professional, 22 Grand Slams including 14 French Opens, 209 weeks as the world No1, 1,080 singles wins, two Olympics gold medals and £107million in prize money, Nadal crossed the finish line on one of the greatest runs we have witnessed in any sport, let alone just in tennis.

Nadal, who got emotional during the national anthem before the start of play, was given a heroic send-off by his team-mates and adoring home fans.

A four-and-a-half-minute video was played over the big screen with classy tributes from fellow tennis stars Serena Williams, Andy Murray, Conchita Martinez, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

Spanish footballers Rodri, Iker Casillas, Andres Iniesta and Raul, golfer Sergio Garcia and ex-Real Madrid man David Beckham also featured.

Nadal teared up watching the montage, which also featured many of his illustrious career highlights from the breakout teenage star to Davis Cup glories for Spain to his remarkable 2022 Australian Open victory, coming from two sets down to beat Daniil Medvedev in the final.

Then he – and many in the crowd including his doting wife Mery – were forced to wipe away the waterworks before he spoke on the court following confirmation of the end.

Asked how he wanted to be remembered, the man from Manacor replied: “The titles and the numbers are there so people probably know that.

“But what I want to be remembered more for is as a good person from a small village in Mallorca.

“I was just a kid who followed their dreams, worked as hard as possible to be where I am today and, being honest, I have been very lucky with the life I’ve had the opportunity to live.

“I achieved more than what I ever dreamed.”

Nadal added to the crowd who chanted “Rafa, Rafa” throughout the tie: “It has been 20 years of a professional career in which you have carried me through the good times, and in the bad, you pushed me to keep playing.

“The truth is that you never want to get to this point. I’m not tired of playing tennis but my body doesn’t want to play anymore and you have to accept that.

“I feel super privileged, I’ve been able to make my hobby my profession for a long time.

“Of course, it has been an emotional day and I felt nerves before the match.

rafa nadal is one of three men to have won career gold medals ( including olympics )

“I tried my best, I tried to enjoy and play with the right energy and the right attitude.”

Nadal mouthed “gracias” to the crowd during a minute-long standing ovation and bit his lip to stop himself from bursting into floods of tears – before blowing kisses to the 11,500 fans packed into the Palacio de Deportes arena on his final exit from the tennis court.

And as the curtain came down on the King of Clay, plenty of tennis’ biggest names took to social media to thank Nadal for all he has done for the sport and wish him all the best in retirement – following on from “fan” Federer’s beautiful open letter to his great friend posted before the Davis Cup finale.

Serena wrote: “Why am I getting so choked up. With @RafaelNadal
retirement. I’m not good at goodbyes.”

Coco Gauff said: “Today, I am from Spain,” as she celebrated the country’s icon.

Boris Becker tweeted: “I am crying as we speak… @RafaelNadal what an absolute icon of sport period! There will never be another one like Rafa! Role model for so many kids all around the world! Gracias Rafa.”

Maria Sharapova added: “No one like you, Rafa. I have so much respect for your grit, your love of the ‘fight’, and the pure class with which you showed up, even on a tough day.”

Rod Laver commented: “Rafa, watching you compete has been a privilege. Your legacy will endure as one of the greatest to ever grace the game.

“Thank you for the countless unforgettable moments and for setting a standard of excellence that will inspire generations to come. Wishing you happiness and success in this next chapter.”

The Nike logo and Nadal’s signature bull symbol – a nod to his relentless fighting spirit – were lit up beside the Eiffel Tower, four months after he carried the Olympic flame during the Paris 2024 opening ceremony, just a few miles from the site of his 14 Roland Garros successes.

And while Nadal knows his name is etched in tennis history forever, it is a striking and significant reminder of his humility and class as a player and as a man that his overriding wish is to be remembered as a “good person from a small village in Mallorca”.

Yes, Nadal will always be more than that – but he will also never be less than that.
