PADDY POWER has staunchly defended the new £1.5million jockeys’ competition, despite criticism from owners.

The David Power Jockeys’ Cup offers riders the chance to compete for points in ITV-televised races, culminating in a £500,000 top prize for the winner.

While trainers and stable staff are also set to benefit, the initiative has drawn criticism from the Racehorse Owners Association, whose chief executive, Louise Norman, expressed disappointment at the lack of recognition or rewards for owners.

Norman remarked: “Whilst we fully support and understand the need for the industry to be innovative in order that it improves engagement and raises its profile, the ROA is disappointed that the new David Power Jockeys’ Cup has not taken into consideration any recognition or reward for racehorse owners who, as the largest investors into the industry, are yet again overlooked during any discussions or communications.”

However, Flutter Entertainment’s brand ambassador, Paddy Power, defended the initiative, calling it a positive and forward-thinking addition to the sport.

Speaking on behalf of the bookmaker Paddy Power said: “I’d be absolutely respectful of every stakeholder but I think there’s a bigger picture and this is good news.

“It’s innovative, something new and not replacing something else. It’s something extra.”

He continued to emphasise the broader benefits for the racing industry: “If there’s more eyeballs on the sport that’s great.

“People start following it better and maybe the audience profile becomes a bit younger. There’s a lot of knock-on benefits to it. What’s good for the sport is good for everyone.

“Without owners there would be no racing, without trainers there would be no racing and without jockeys there would be no racing, so everybody is really important.

“I think on reflection this is a new £1.5million investment, not coming from somewhere else, going into a prize fund to create a new initiative.”

Paddy Power also suggested the competition could boost the sport’s popularity by making jockeys more relatable and engaging to fans: “Hopefully, it’ll make more personalities out of these guys, make them more accessible and recognisable to people watching at home.

“If you think about it, they’re the constants. We’ll have loads of horses and colours on a race-day, but these are the ones who will be here the next day and the day after that. They’ll be different horses and colours. In terms of following a narrative, this is what people can relate to.

“That’ll make it more and more exciting as the season goes on and in an ideal world, we’ll get two, three or four jockeys fighting it out in the last few weeks and it becomes a good storyline for the Champions series.

“If you look at other sports, the way they’ve connected with their audience, expanded them and re-engaged the existing fanbase, it just works. There’s no reason it can’t work for racing.”

Martin Lewis reveals the cheapest supermarket to buy a 1litre bottle of Baileys this week – and it only costs £10

MARTIN LEWIS’ MoneySavingExpert has revealed the cheapest place to bag a one litre bottle of Baileys this week ahead of Christmas.

With December just around the corner, shoppers are rushing to stock up on the boozy festive-favourite.

Baileys Original Irish Cream 1L
For limited time shoppers can buy 1L of Baileys Original Irish Cream for just £10
Supplied

The weekly MoneySavingExpert newsletter revealed that the best place to buy is now Tesco, with a 1L bottle selling for just £10 with a ClubCard.

1L Baileys bottles at the supermarket are typically £22 – meaning you can get it for more than half its original price.

This offer is currently the cheapest around, with Asda, Amazon, Ocado and Sainsbury’s (with a Nectar Card) listing the item for £13.

But the Tesco offer only runs until Monday December 9, so you’ll have to be quick.

Or, you can wait to see what other deals emerge in the run up to the Christmas period.

Baileys prices are constantly changing around this time of year, with many quipping the trend “the battle of the Baileys”.

Earlier this month, Sainsbury’s Nectar Card holders could purchase the 1 litre item for £10 for a limited time.

Around this time Costco was also selling the bottles for £9.99 a pop.

And in Morrisons you could get one for just £8.50 with a More Card membership if you spent £45 or more on groceries.

These deals have now ended – but many more are expected to come back.

The team at MoneySavingExpert said: “It’s possible we’ll see more supermarkets drop the price of a litre-bottle to £10 (perhaps even a little lower) in the lead-up to Christmas.

“We’ll update readers as new Baileys offers crop up.”

Baileys is famed for its iconic sweet and milky taste, with notes of vanilla and chocolate.

You can drink it neat and cold on ice – or you can use it to make a festive cocktail.

Some people like to put it in their hot chocolate for a warm festive tipple.

It is always important to remember to compare prices before buying Baileys so you don’t miss out.

Comparison sites like Trolley are great for getting the latest updates on supermarket prices.

By searching for the specific brand, the website will compare costs based on price per 100ml.

For example, in some cases it is more cost efficient to opt for a larger 1L bottle than a 70cl bottle so you get more bang for your buck.

In Sainsbury’s, a 1L Baileys bottle which sells for £13 means you are spending £1.30 per 100ml.

Meanwhile, the 70cl bottle, which costs just £10 and might seem cheaper, actually means you are spending £1.43 per 100ml.

Therefore it helps to work out how much you are spending, compared to how much you are getting.

Other ways to keep track of the newest deals include signing up to a membership with your usual supermarket.

Clubcard and Nectar Card deals change each week, as well as the Aldi SpecialBuy ranges.

You can also keep track of a supermarket’s prices on its website or by downloading the app.

However, remember that prices can change day to day and some deals happening in store may not be visible online.

Likewise, some items may be more expensive depending on which store you’re visiting.

To locate your nearest store, go to the retailer’s website and use the Store Finder tool.

How to save money on your supermarket shop

THERE are plenty of ways to save on your grocery shop.

You can look out for yellow or red stickers on products, which show when they’ve been reduced.

If the food is fresh, you’ll have to eat it quickly or freeze it for another time.

Making a list should also save you money, as you’ll be less likely to make any rash purchases when you get to the supermarket.

Going own brand can be one easy way to save hundreds of pounds a year on your food bills too.

This means ditching “finest” or “luxury” products and instead going for “own” or value” type of lines.

Plenty of supermarkets run wonky veg and fruit schemes where you can get cheap prices if they’re misshapen or imperfect.

For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme, offering boxes of 5kg of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50.

If you’re on a low income and a parent, you may be able to get up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers to use at the supermarket too.

Plus, many councils offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund.

If you love Baileys but want to spend less and aren’t fussed about having the real thing, then there are plenty of dupes around.

Last year The Sun tried Bailey’s dupes from all the top supermarkets, and ranked which ones were best.

Reporter Lynsey Barber ranked Lidl Irish Cream Liqueur the highest with a nine out of 10.

This year it is selling for around £7.99 for a 1L bottle, but prices vary between stores.

Another favourite was the Aldi Ballycastle Country Cream, which costs even less at £4.99 per 70cl, so £7.13 per 1L.

The Ballycastle range also features a range of festive flavours, such as a milk chocolate clementine and a white chocolate.

These are slightly pricier at £7.49 per 70cl, but a great deal compared to Bailey’s special edition products which typically cost anywhere from £22 – and are currently unavailable to buy.

Former Hollywood star Catherine was seen out and about in LA looking relaxed and wearing casual clothing.

Dressed head to toe in black, the star wore her long brunette hair down and accessorised her tight top and leggings with dark shades and an over-the-shoulder black handbag.

The model rose to fame starring in the iconic role as Daisy Duke on The Dukes of Hazzard and made Catherine Bach a household name.

The actress went onto star in movies Street Justice, Driving Force, Masters of Menace, The Breakup Girl and soap opera The Young and the Restless.

She was last seen on the big screen in 2015’s flick, Book of Fire.

Speaking about wowing the casting directors at her first audition for the hit show, she said: “After I did my reading during the audition, there was total silence.

“I thought, ‘Oh no, they didn’t like what I did.’ Then everyone, we’re talking about 30 people, got up and started clapping.

“They just connected with my vision of how this part should be played. Two weeks later, I was on a plane to Georgia.”

She told CMT News in 2005 about being a bombshell: “I think what made Daisy Duke stand out is that I am a ‘sex symbol’ who never took her clothes off and never had a love scene.”

“I never did anything embarrassing. And by the way, to this day, people know that I’m not going to shock them or surprise them with some crazy thing.

“Somebody’s got to be able to carry the bottom line and have a dignified life and not be crazy. And I guess that’s just gonna be me.”

During the height of her fame, the star made headlines after insuring her legs for $1 million.

She said at the time: “You know what it is? I do things that I shouldn’t really do… I ski.

“I had a plane when I started the series, which they made me get rid of… [I do] a lot of things. And I sort of take chances. So they thought that they should insure my legs.”

Bach made her mark and posed as Daisy Duke for a poster which sold 5 million copies.

The Monk actress married David Shaw (the stepson of Angela Lansbury) in 1976.

The couple divorced in 1981 and Bach went onto marry entertainment lawyer Peter Lopez in 1990.

The couple had two daughters. Sadly, in April 2010, the 60-year-old was found shot dead in what’s thought to be a suicide.

Heartbreaking tributes to ‘bright and joyful’ boy, 11, who died after being hit by car outside school

MOVING tributes have been paid to a “bright and joyful” 11-year-old boy who was killed in a car crash outside his school.

Evan Rothwell was hit by a grey Nissan Qashqai outside Kings School on Wrexham Road, Chester, last Tuesday evening.

Evan bravely battled his injuries but tragically passed away in hospital on Friday, November 15.

In a tribute from his family, shared by Cheshire Police, they said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm that our beautiful son Evan Rothwell has passed away as a result of the road traffic accident near King’s School last Tuesday.

‘Evan loved life and used his talents to entertain and bring joy to others.

‘Evan lit up the world around him when he was making friends laugh with jokes and magic tricks, playing cricket with his friends, performing with Ama-sing on Britain’s Got Talent and entertaining audiences as part of the Chester Scout’s Gang Show. He made us proud every day.

“We are shocked and devastated at his loss. We would like to thank the emergency services staff and the staff at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital for their expertise, care and commitment and most of all for their kindness.

“We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from our local community. We really appreciate your love and support.

“The speed limit on the road where Evan was hit is a 40mph limit. This road is outside a school, and we strongly feel that this needs to be lowered to prevent anything like this from happening again.”

Evan’s headteacher, George Hartley, said: “Evan will be forever remembered as a bright, joyful and fun-loving classmate, with an intellectual curiosity that belied his young years.

“Our thoughts throughout this past week have remained with Evan’s heartbroken family, loved ones and friends.

“This devastating news has shaken our school community to its core and there are immense challenges ahead for our pupils, staff and parents.

“We have drawn great strength from the many messages of support and from the countless tributes being paid to Evan.

“We are united in grief and shock, and we are doing all we can to support each other with compassion and understanding as we face the loss of one of our own.”

Lottie Moss reveals how Ozempic hospital dash changed her life but admits she’ll ‘never say never’ to taking it again

LOTTIE Moss has revealed how her Ozempic hospital dash and terrifying seizure changed her life, while admitting she’d “never say never” to taking it again.

The stunning 26-year-old took the controversial appetite suppressing jab despite only weighing nine stone, and speaking on her Dream On podcast she said she’d “rather die than take it again” after a health battle that happened as a result of it.

The star has embarked on a fitness overhaul following her health scare[/caption]

It was in hospital that she learned she’d been taking a much higher dose than was safe for her body.

Lottie said: “We go and see one of the nurses and she’s like ‘how much of a dose are you taking?’ I was like however much and she was like ‘oh my god, that’s so not the amount you should be taking.’”

Kate Moss’ half-sister Lottie also shared that she’d had a seizure while in the hospital.

But now, as a result of what happened, the star has completely overhauled her lifestyle and has embarked on a big health kick.

Lottie spoke to The Sun at Boohoo’s Cyber Party and shared whether she’d use Ozempic to lose weight again.

“I think you never say never to anything,” Lottie said, adding: “But honestly I’m really working out loads now instead and I’ve lost a bunch of weight from that.

“I’m trying to eat well now and be happy.”

Lottie, who looked incredible at the event in a plunging black dress, also confirmed that she’s “newly single” after being dumped by musician ex Evan Campbell.

She wrote on X in September: “Just got dumped so I guess it’s feral fall.”

As well as embracing a new love for fitness and healthy eating, the star said she’s also dating again and feels like she’s going from “a girl to a woman.”

Lottie’s fitness overhaul comes after she discussed her negative relationship with dieting.

She first started modelling seriously at 18 when she moved to London and was given a personal trainer who restricted her from eating certain foods

Lottie said she hit her lowest ebb during the covid pandemic, gauging on food and not exercising. She gained over a stone and said she’s struggled to lose it ever since.

Everything you need to know about fat jabs

Weight loss jabs are a hot media topic at the moment, with hundreds of success stories from people who shed the pounds.

In March 2023, the NHS announced it would make Wegovy, a drug made by Danish firm Novo Nordisk, available on prescription to thousands of obese Brits.

It contains the drug semaglutide, which is said to have helped reality star Kim Kardashian and Twitter boss Elon Musk lose weight.

Wegovy, which helped a third of people reduce their weight by 20 per cent in trials, is now available from pharmacies like Boots.

How do they work?

The jabs work by suppressing your appetite, making you eat less and therefore lose weight.

To do this, semaglutide mimics the role of a natural hormone, called GLP-1.

GLP-1 is part of the signalling pathway that tells your body you have eaten, and prepares it to use the energy that comes from your food.

London GP and founder of wellgoodwellbeing.com, Dr Zoe Watson, said: “Your body naturally produces an appetite regulating hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1.

“These jabs work by regulating your appetite, which can lead to eating fewer calories and losing weight.”

Aren’t they diabetes drugs?

Semaglutide, the active drug in Wegovy, was originally sold under the name Ozempic specifically for diabetes patients.

But people started noticing it helped suppress their appetites, stopping them eating as much and helping them shed the pounds.

Novo Nordisk then developed Wegovy, which contains the same chemical but at higher doses specifically to aid weight loss.

Wegovy is not prescribed for diabetes patients.

Can I get them?

Wegovy is offered on prescription to obese adults given specialist weight loss treatment.

The NHS currently also offers a similar drug called Saxenda, or liraglutide.

Both are only available throught specialist weight management services, which means you have to be referred to clinics led by experts.

GPs can’t prescribe them on their own, Dr Watson said.

The jabs have to be taken as part of an overall programme to help with lifestyle changes and psychological support to get the best effect from the medication prescribed.

Are there any risks?

Like all medicines, the jabs do not come without side effects.

Around half of people taking the drug experience gut issues, including sickness, bloating, acid reflux, constipation and diarrhoea.

Dr Sarah Jarvis, GP and clinical consultant at patient.info, said: “One of the more uncommon side effects is severe acute pancreatitis, which is extremely painful and happens to one in 500 people.”

Other uncommon side effects include altered taste, kidney problems, allergic reactions, gallbladder problems and hypoglycemia.

What other options are there?

Mounjaro (brand name for tirzepatide) also came onto the market in early 2024.

Like Wegovy, tirzepatide stems from a drug originally designed to treat diabetes.

The weekly injection helped overweight people drop more than two stone in 18 months.

It is available with to order with a prescription online from pharmacies including Superdrug and LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor.

It works in a similar way to Wegovy and Saxenda, but is more effective.

Dr Mitra Dutt from LloydsPharmacy says: “Based on clinical trials, 96 per cent of people were able to lose more than five per cent of their body fat using Mounjaro. In similar trials, 84 per cent of people lost more than five per cent of their body weight on Wegovy, and 60 per cent on Saxenda.

“Mounjaro works by activating two hormonal receptors (GIP and GLP-1), which enhance insulin production, improve insulin sensitivity, and work to decrease food intake.”

Meanwhile, medics have voiced concern over the growing number of people turning to ‘skinny jabs’ to get into shape.

They are supposed to be prescription-only for medical purposes but are easy to buy privately for people looking to shed a few pounds.

NHS England’s medical director, Professor Sir Stephen Powis, said: “Drugs including Ozempic and Wegovy should only be used by people prescribed them for obesity or diabetes.

“I’m worried about reports that people are misusing them – they are not intended as a quick fix for people trying to get ‘beach body ready’.

“Buying medication online without a doctor’s supervision can lead to complications and dangerous consequences.”
