Winter health warning over hidden conditions that flare up in cold weather – know the signs

TEMPERATURES have plunged in the UK, with snow and ice covering large parts of the country.

While you might have had to put a blanket on to ward off the cold, experts have warned the cold burst could have a life-threatening impact your health – particularly for those with a certain condition.

Cold, dry air can trigger potentially life-threatening flare-ups in people with COPD[/caption]

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the name for a group of lung conditions including emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Plummeting temperatures and icy conditions can trigger potentially life-threatening flare-ups, warned Asthma + Lung UK.

Wintry weather can affect lung conditions like COPD because cold air can cause the airways to narrow, which can increase the amount of mucus produced and make it harder for you to breathe.

Cold, dry air can also irritate the airways and worsen symptoms like breathlessness, coughing and wheezing.

It also weakens the immune system, making it harder to fight respiratory infections like colds and flu.

It’s estimated 1.2 million adults are already living with the condition, and its prevalence is expected to increase by 40 per cent over the next six years.

But many people with COPD can have it for years without realising because symptoms develop slowly.

A recent poll carried out by TidalSense found many Brits are unaware of the key symptoms.

Check our boxout below to find out common symptoms of COPD to look out for.

Other health issues that can arise in cold weather

For some, winter means Christmas time with family and snuggling up by the fire with a hot cup of tea.

But for others it’s the time of year persistent health conditions flare up – or new issues arise.

Health issues that may rear their ugly head more in winter include, dry skin, hair loss, joint pain, brittle bones, seasonal depression, incontinence, blood clots and heart attacks.

Sudden changes in temperature cause thermal stress for the body – which has to work harder to maintain its constant temperature.

In particular, research has shown this makes it more likely for people to suffer from dangerous blood clots during winter.

Blood clots

Blood clots can cause deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which is commonly referred to as a silent killer.

That’s because you might not always notice the symptoms, especially in the winter months.

The NHS says the key symptoms of DVT are:

  1. throbbing or cramping pain in one leg (rarely both legs), usually in the calf or thigh
  2. swelling in one leg (rarely both legs)
  3. warm skin around the painful area
  4. red or darkened skin around the painful area
  5. swollen veins that are hard or sore when you touch them

Diabetes

The colder weather can also wreak havoc on your pelvic floor, and subsequently lead to issues with incontinence.

While the change in temperature could leave you running to the loo, it could also be a sign of diabetes.

Experts at The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases warned that diabetes can cause nerve damage to your urinary tract, causing bladder problems.

“Overweight and obesity also can increase bladder problems, such as urinary incontinence (UI). Managing diabetes is an important part of preventing problems that can lead to excess urination,” they added.

Experts also previously warned that hair loss could be an early sign of diabetes.

One of the more subtle symptoms of the condition could be hair loss, said Barbie Cervoni, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes care and education specialist.

The symptoms of diabetes you need to know according to the NHS:

  1. feeling very thirsty
  2. peeing more frequently than usual, particularly at night
  3. feeling very tired
  4. weight loss and loss of muscle bulk
  5. itching around the penis or vagina, or frequent episodes of thrush
  6. cuts or wounds that heal slowly
  7. blurred vision

Studies show drier air can lead to drier skin which may see rashes develop, according to MailOnline.

And those with eczema will most likely find they’re more affected than others.

This can also see the scalp get flaky and itchy which dries out and damages hair follicles and can result in hair loss.

The dry air can also impact people with asthma more as it can irritate their airways and make their symptoms even worse.

Arthrtis sufferers may notice their joints are getting sorer, too.

That’s because when it’s cold the body sends blood to the core organs, leaving the joints stiff and causing nerve endings to be more sensitive.

Osteoporosis

And the lack of sunlight can see the body deprived of vitamin D, which can result in a loss of skeletal tissue or brittle bones.

Experts at Bangkok International Hospital said brittle bones might also be a sign of silent killer osteoporosis.

“Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle, therefore even minor trauma or mild stress can cause a fracture.

“Moreover, osteoporosis in the spine often leads to loss of height over time. Osteoporosis frequently refers to “the silent killer” since it usually exhibits no symptoms,” the experts said.

The first sign of osteoporosis, the NHS says, is a broken bone.

Key signs are:

  1. broken bones such as the wrist, hips or spinal bones
  2. bending forwards

They added: “Some older people develop the characteristic stooped (bent forward) posture.

“It happens when the bones in the spine have broken, making it difficult to support the weight of the body,” the experts said.

It can also lead to Seasonal Affective Disorder, or seasonal depression, which is more likely to affect people who already struggle with their mental health.

That’s because more darkness outside can even disrupt a person’s circadian rhythm.

And, health issues that may strike for people in winter that they don’t often struggle with can crop up, too.

Plus people exposed to cold weather are more likely to suffer a heart attack, a study revealed.

Meanwhile, Brits are being warned the way they’re heating their homes this winter could be causing serious damage.

There are also four winter bugs that are rife in kids, and parents are being urged to know the signs.

Families are also being urged to know the signs they must never ignore as there is a stealth killer pneumonia that strikes in winter.

Symptoms of COPD to look out for

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a condition that makes breathing increasingly more difficult.

It can develop slowly over many years, so many people may not be aware they have it at first.

Most people with COPD do not have any noticeable symptoms until they reach their late 40s or 50s.

Common symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath – this may only happen when exercising at first, and you may sometimes wake up at night feeling breathless
  • A persistent chesty cough with phlegm that does not go away
  • Frequent chest infections
  • Persistent wheezing

Less common symptoms include:

  • Weight loss
  • Tiredness
  • Swollen ankles from a build-up of fluid (oedema)
  • Chest pain and coughing up blood – although these are usually signs of another condition, such as chest infection or possibly lung cancer.

If you have persistent symptoms of COPD, particularly if you’re over 35 and smoke or used to smoke, see a GP.

Barcelona BLOCKED from moving into £1.25billion stadium due to little-known rule as return to Nou Camp is postponed

BARCELONA’S return to the Nou Camp has been DELAYED due to a little-known Uefa rule.

The Spanish giants have spent the last 18 months playing at the Estadio Olimpico while a £1.25billion renovation is carried out on their home ground.

The development includes increasing capacity from 99,000 to 104,000, as well as the additions of a roof, luxury bar and new escalators.

Barcelona had hoped to move back to the Nou Camp before the end of the year.

However, Uefa rules dictate clubs cannot change stadiums before the end of the league phase of the Champions League.

It means Barcelona would either have had to play league matches at the Nou Camp and European games at the Estadio Olimpico – or push back the move.

Now, in an email to season-ticket holders who had requested a pass to the Nou Camp for the second half of the season, Barcelona have confirmed they will not return until at least mid-February.

They said this is because of “Uefa regulations that prevent changing stadiums during the initial phase of the Champions League and the logistical difficulties and extra costs involved in maintaining two large-capacity facilities operating at the same time”.

The date change means games against Valencia, Alaves and Atalanta will now take place at the Estadio Olimpico.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the first game back at the Nou Camp could either be a LaLiga clash with Rayo Vallecano on February 16 or a Champions League play-off round fixture.

Barcelona will discount the price of the passes to account for the matches moved from the Nou Camp to the Estadio Olimpico – the Valencia and Alaves games.

The Atalanta clash was already included in the Estadio Olimpico pass.

Virtual images were released on the website Espai Barcelona in September showing how the ground will look once completed.

A summary of the development read: “A space where anything is possible, a place to experience new ways of enjoying sport and entertainment, strengthening inclusion and integration with the neighbourhood.

“An innovative and groundbreaking project.

“A far-reaching improvement to boost the club’s growth, ensure new sources of income, and secure the future of the organisation.”

The stadium improvements are set to earn Barcelona £25m more in revenue each year.

Barcelona sit top of the LaLiga table, six points clear of Real Madrid having played one game more.

In the Champions League, they have won three of their four matches and occupy sixth place in the table, meaning as it stands they will qualify automatically for the last-16.

Katie Taylor’s promoter Eddie Hearn gives update on Amanda Serrano trilogy as he reveals she has ‘three or four options’

EDDIE HEARN can foresee Katie Taylor fighting Amanda Serrano a third time – but revealed she has “three or four options”.

Taylor extended her lead over Serrano to 2-0 after a unanimous decision victory at AT&T Stadium last Friday night.

Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile

Their rematch lived up to the standards set by their Madison Square Garden original which KT won by split decision.

The fight was watched by over 74 million people on Netflix, and was promoted by Most Valuable Promotions – which is run by Jake Paul.

Both fighters have spoken of their interest in a trilogy, with the extended format of 12, three-minute rounds discussed.

The undisputed super lightweight champion’s promoter Eddie Hearn was asked about the possibility of Taylor vs Serrano 3 by Ariel Helwani.

And he said: “That probably depends on [Most Valuable Promotions].

Katie Taylor is with Matchroom and DAZN and don’t forget DAZN allowed that fight to take place, really.

“We do that because it was a tremendous opportunity for Katie Taylor. She was financially really well rewarded for that fight.

“The audience was incredible and I think, despite our differences with MVP, I think Nakisa [Bidarian, Serrano’s manager] and Jake [Paul] and MVP did a tremendous job on the show.

“I have no problem saying it and we are very grateful for the opportunity.

“The reality is they’ve got their options. We’ve got our options.

“It is 2-0 to Katie Taylor. I don’t think Katie would have an issue doing a third but it is not going to be just no regard for Katie Taylor and her team to make one of the biggest fights in the sport.

“I think, commercially, it is a great opportunity to do it again. The response has been incredible.

“It is so great for not just women‘s boxing but all boxing to see an audience dialled in and tuned in.

“I certainly don’t rule out the third.

“Katie has probably got three or four options right now and Amanda Serrano is definitely one she would entertain.”

The idea of a third fight had been discussed by the two fighters even BEFORE they fought for the second time last Friday night.

Both boxers sat opposite one another on an episode of MVP Face-2-Face during fight week.

And Serrano claimed that, during negotiations for the fight, Taylor’s management turned down the chance of fighting in 12, three-minute rounds.

The Puerto Rican has advocated for the extended format to became the norm for a while, while KT previously spoke of her own willingness.

The Bray woman revealed she would be in favour of a third clash.

The reason being that she would like to square off in 12, three-minute rounds and put the debate to bed.

She revealed: “If I won again, the only reason I would do the trilogy is because it is against Amanda Serrano in a 12, three-minute round fight.

“That would make it very, very interesting, and I would absolutely be up for that.”

The Med’s smallest inhabited island with only 50 residents – where temperatures hit 20C in mid-winter & hotels cost £50

EUROPE is home to hundreds of stunning little islands that you may not have heard of – but are great for avoiding the crowds.

One of those places is Tabarca – the only inhabited island in Valencia.

Tabarca is located 11 miles off the coast of Alicante and is actually part of a small archipelago consisting of other tiny islets[/caption]

Located 11 miles off the coast of Alicante, Tabarca is actually part of a small archipelago consisting of tiny islets like Cantera, La Galera and La Nao.

Stretching for just 1,800m in length and measuring just 400m at its widest point, it’s not surprising that Tabarca is home to just 50 people.

The tiny Mediterranean island was used by pirates whenever they needed refuge until King Carlos III ordered the island to be fortified.

A town was then built on the island to house sailors who were being held prisoner in Tunisia.

The sailors were granted permission to live inside Tabarca’s walls alongside a Spanish garrison and barracks.

Both the island’s governor and garrison were removed in 1850, with the Tabarca’s population dwindling in the latter half of the 19th century.

Nowadays, the island has just 50 year-round residents, making it the smallest permanently inhabited island in Spain.

The fortified walls have been declared a Historical and Artistic Site and an Asset of Cultural Interest and the Governor’s House remains on the island although it is now used as a hotel.

Surrounded by crystal-clear waters, Tabarca is home to secluded coves and sandy beaches.

Tarbaca Beach, also known as Platja de l’Illa or Central Beach, is the most popular beach on the island thanks to its proximity to the main town.

At the beach, visitors can rent parasols and umbrellas, with several restaurants lining the promenade.

Other beaches on the island include Platja Gran and Birros Cove, which is perfect for snorkelling.

The weather in Tabarca is fairly warm throughout the year, with temperatures reaching 20C even in mid-winter.

There are several other attractions on the island, including Museum Nueva Tabarca – a local museum detailing the history of Tabarca.

The museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday throughout the winter, opening at 11am.

Given the island’s history, there are plenty of interesting buildings to visit on Tabarca.

One of those is St. Peter and Paul’s Church, an 18th century church with sea views.

There’s also the San Gabriel Gate (an ancient brick gate), San José Tower (an 18th-century garrison fortress) and Tabarca Lighthouse.

Local delicacies on the island include caldero – a two-course meal where both fish and rice are served.

Despite being a popular spot with day-trippers, visitors can actually stay overnight on the island, with accommodation options from £50 per night.

Direct ferries operate from Alicante to Tabarca, with return tickets from €23 (£19.10) per person.

There are also two other direct ferry routes from the Spanish mainland that operate from Santa Pola and Benidorm.

Other little-known Spanish towns to visit

HERE are two other little-known Spanish towns to visit.

The Spanish seaside town of Ribadesella is loved by locals and unknown to most British holidaymakers.

Located on the north coast of Spain, the town is a popular spot among Spanish holidaymakers.

Ribadesella was founded by King Alfonso X in the 13th century, and it is split into two distinct parts.

Meanwhile, Almodovar del Rio in Andalusia has been named as a “must-visit” destination in Spain.

Located between the Guadalquivir River and the Sierra de Hornachuelos Nature Reserve and mountain range, Almodovar del Rio is a Spanish hilltop town.

One of the town’s main attractions is its medieval castle, which had a starring role in the seventh season of the hit TV show Game of Thrones.

Married At First Sight’s reunion episodes hit with over 500 furious complaints to Ofcom as fans slam show ‘bullies’

MARRIED AT FIRST SIGHT has been hit with another slew of Ofcom complaints, which came after the explosive reunion episodes last week.

On Wednesday (November 13) and Thursday (November 14) last week, Married At First Sight UK aired its final episodes from the series – and they received more than 500 complaints in total.

After weeks of witnessing the couples navigate their way through the experiment, the show concluded in an explosive way that has in turn resulted in a barrage of complaints.

The episode which aired on November 13 was the reunion dinner party that saw most of the couples reunite with one another at the mixer before sitting down for a meal.

This episode received a whopping 341 complaints from E4 viewers.

During this episode, things heated up and kicked off when controversial bride Hannah made a comeback, and when couple Adam and Polly had a huge row.

According to the broadcasting regulator, Ofcom received hundreds of complaints related to “alleged bullying behaviour during the programme”.

The complaints were in relation to the confrontational moments between Holly and Polly towards Hannah and Adam, and how “the experts failed to address this behaviour, and the use of offensive language during these interactions”.

Meanwhile, the more mellow episode that aired on November 14 also received complaints relating to “alleged bullying behaviour”, despite this comprising of calm sit-down chats on the coaches with the experts.

The 187 complaints made by viewers related to the behaviour “particularly from Holly and Polly towards Hannah”.

And again, the complaints also related to how “the experts failed to address this behaviour”.

HOLLY AND HANNAH CLASH

Midway through the 2024 MAFS UK series, Holly, who was married to Alex before they left the experiment, clashed with Hannah who was married to Stephen.

Holly and Hannah clashed when the couples went on a countryside retreat for a few days.

At the time, Hannah and her husband Stephen were at loggerheads after their honeymoon ended in disaster, with their marriage hanging by a thread.

While at the retreat, brides Holly and Polly both thought that Hannah was making inappropriate comments towards the other grooms.

And Holly was convinced that Hannah was trying to flirt with her husband Alex.

Mafs couples that have stood the test of time

Loved-up Tayah Victoria and Adam Aveling of series six fame had the first Mafs baby.

The pair couldn’t keep their hands off each other on the programme and quickly found their feet in the outside world, moving into Adam’s Doncaster home.

Just 18 months after meeting, the couple welcomed their daughter Beau.

Season five couple Michelle Walder and Owen Jenkins also managed to make their marriage work away from the cameras and had their first child in December.

Teacher Michelle, 29, has no regrets about taking part in the experiment. She told us: “I just feel very lucky and thankful that it has worked out – and excited for everything to come.”

Michelle and Owen were both sick of dating apps when they applied in 2019.

Owen recalled: “I had been out for some drinks with a friend after work.

“While he was out for a cigarette I was scrolling on Instagram waiting for him to come back in.

“The MAFS advert was the last thing I saw, and I joked, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if I signed up?’

“A few beers later when I was back at home I sent in the application, and the rest is history.”

Another couple to make Mafs UK history is Zoe Clifton and Jenna Robinson.

Despite a slight rocky start, where they clashed over Jenna’s vegan lifestyle, the show’s first same sex pairing are still going strong.

They even have a successful podcast together called Life With a Pod.

Jenna shed light on being involved in the show earlier this year when she told us: “We’re not legally married, and I never felt like we were. I definitely feel the process makes you take the relationship a lot more seriously and having the help of the experts… if you can survive that process it sets a firm foundation for a long-lasting relationship.”

She explained how Hannah told Alex how he was her “favourite groom” and then during a game she said she’s husband swap with Alex.

Then, during the Girls’ Night earlier this month, Holly and Hannah clashed again – sparking more Ofcom complaints when Holly publicly accused Hannah of flirting with Sionainn’s husband Ryan.

But tempers frayed once again at the reunion dinner party when Holly was told that Hannah had spoken about her daughter.

Hannah then admitted during the sit-down chat with the experts that her banter could have been taken the wrong way before Holly snapped back at her.

She said: “I walked into the room on Ladies Night and got called a s**g and ‘look what the cat dragged in’ and I just wouldn’t treat another woman like that.”

POLLY AND ADAM FEUD

Polly and Adam’s feud was also in the firing line for Ofcom complaints, which came after he slammed her for talking about him at the table.

He then aired details on their sex life, shouting: “Why are you b******g about someone who doesn’t f*****g want you?”

Polly was at the end of her tether and threw a whole glass of red wine over Adam’s white tuxedo, with him covered in red splashes for the rest of the episode.

The bride also fired expletives at her former husband, with her storming out of the room shortly after.

I filled my kid’s Christmas stockings with B&M buys – my clever hack means you’ll pay less but they’ll get more

A SAVVY mum-of-two shared the hack she uses to fill her children’s stockings on a budget.

She shared the smaller items she was gifting her daughters this Christmas.

A savvy mum shared the hack she used to save money when shopping for stocking fillers (stock image)[/caption]

A mum showed her followers the products she purchased for her children.

She revealed that she bought most of the stocking items from her local B&M.

To save money, she explained that she keeps an eye out for a specific kind of product.

“I look out for is stuff in multi-packs that I can open when I get home and divide between them,” she said.

The savvy shopper picked up bath bombs, a multi-pack of chocolate, little sensory toys, and a pack of mini Play-Doh.

“Instead of buying two of everything, I’m just going to open up the packs and divide them up,” she explained.

The mum said that she was “at the point of the year” where she had began making notes on what her daughters needed.

She then used these items to fill their Christmas stockings to the brim.

The budgeting enthusiast also picked up a crazy bath soap from B&M as her daughters “love” them.

She added that the soaps are also “great for play activities too.”

The mum also added a pack of chocolate coins to each of the stockings.

She joked that it wouldn’t be a Christmas stocking without the festive snack.

For her final addition, she filled two small Christmas-themed jars with hot chocolate powder and mini marshmallows.

Her hack helped to save her a significant amount on the Christmas buys.

The mum revealed that she spent a total of £20 on all the items for both the stockings.

How to save money on Christmas shopping

Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how you can save money on your Christmas shopping.

Limit the amount of presents – buying presents for all your family and friends can cost a bomb.

Instead, why not organise a Secret Santa between your inner circles so you’re not having to buy multiple presents.

Plan ahead – if you’ve got the stamina and budget, it’s worth buying your Christmas presents for the following year in the January sales.

Make sure you shop around for the best deals by using price comparison sites so you’re not forking out more than you should though.

Buy in Boxing Day sales – some retailers start their main Christmas sales early so you can actually snap up a bargain before December 25.

Delivery may cost you a bit more, but it can be worth it if the savings are decent.

Shop via outlet stores – you can save loads of money shopping via outlet stores like Amazon Warehouse or Office Offcuts.

They work by selling returned or slightly damaged products at a discounted rate, but usually any wear and tear is minor.

B&M has had Christmas stocking fillers available since mid-August.

“Tis the season to save” read snowflake patterned signs plastered up and down the aisles at the end of the summer, advertising ‘seasonal gifts’ from £5.

Despite the bargain deals, shoppers shared their frustration over the early advertisement.

“I absolutely love Christmas but even I think this is way too early,” wrote one Facebook user.

“It’s too early. It makes it less special as you’re sick of looking at Christmas stuff come December,” agreed another person.
