Angela Rayner dismisses family farm tax fears as ‘scaremongering’ while Tories warn elderly men ‘in tears’ over tax raid

ANGELA Rayner today dismissed fears over the family farm tax as “scaremongering”.

Standing in for Sir Keir Starmer at deputy-PMQs, the firebrand politician doubled down on Labour’s brutal inheritance raid – and even refused to rule out further hikes.

In a packed out Commons the Deputy Labour Leader said: “Our plan is sensible, fair and proportionate and protects the smaller estates while fixing public services that they rely on.”

Just a day after 20,000 furious agricultural workers marched on Westminster, Ms Rayner added there’s been “scaremongering” around how many farmers will be impacted.

Standing in for Tory leader Kemi Badenoch, Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary Alex Burghart accused Labour of “punishing” Brits that didn’t vote for them.

He said: “The truth is that this is a punishment meted out to people who don’t vote Labour.

“It is the same punishment meted out to parents who send their children to private schools.

“It is the same punishment meted out to the owners of small businesses terrified about National Insurance contributions.”

A fired-up Mr Burghart added that Labour will be secretly plotting to “come back for more” inheritance raids.

He blasted: “Everyone here and all the farmers at home will have heard there was no guarantee there.

“We know what that means: They are coming back for more.”

The Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary told Ms Rayner that distraught farmers including “elderly men and children” have been “in tears” over the levy.

He asked the Deputy PM: “What would the right honourable lady like to say to them?”

Hitting back, Ms Rayner responded: “We are absolutely committed to our British farmers and that is why we have committed £5 billion to the farming budget over the next two years.”

HARRY Styles is leading mourners at his One Direction bandmate Liam Payne’s funeral.

Liam will be laid to rest just over a month after he passed away aged just 31.

Dozens of locals and fans have also gathered outside the church to pay their final respects.

The One Direction singer’s funeral is taking place in the Home Counties.

The funeral will be private and attended by just his family and closest friends.

A wake will take place following the service.

It was snowing outside the 12th century church where the funeral is set to take place.

A marquee was put up in preparation for guests’ arrival.

A floral tribute in the shape of bowling pins was also set up by the entrance.

Autumnal floral displays, made up of red and orange leaves, and white roses, were placed around the doorways of the church.

Florists were also seen unloading dozens of bunches of white flowers from a van shortly after 9am.

A source said: “Liam’s funeral is taking place in the Home Counties.

“His family have gone to great lengths to put together the perfect service and give him the send off he deserves.

“Liam may have been a global superstar but to Geoff and Karen he will always be their little boy.

“It is going to be an incredibly difficult day.”

Liam’s One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, 30, Niall Horan, 31, Zayn Malik, 31, and Louis Tomlinson, 32,  will all be in attendance.

Cheryl, 41, shares son Bear, seven, with Liam and spoke of the grief she feels for her son following his dad’s death.

She was a judge on X Factor when Wolverhampton-born Liam found fame as a teenager – and the couple later began dating in 2016.

They welcomed Bear in 2017 and went their separate ways the following year.

In a short statement following his death, Liam’s family said: “We are heartbroken.

“Liam will forever live in our hearts and we’ll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul.”

Liam passed away on October 16 after falling from his third floor balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He had been in the country to renew his US visa having relocated to Florida with his girlfriend, American influencer Kate Cassidy.

During his trip he attended Niall Horan’s sell out concert at the Movistar Arena.

After news broke of his son’s passing, Liam’s brave father Geoff travelled out to South America to help authorities bring his son back to the UK.

Liam shot to international fame in 2010 when he auditioned for Simon Cowell’s The X Factor as a solo artist.

He was then put into One Direction by the judges.

Despite only coming third on the show, One Direction went on to become the biggest British group since The Beatles.

Throughout their five years together, they sold 70million records and landed four UK No1 singles and four UK No1 albums.

Speaking in 2022, Liam said he hoped to be remembered simply as being a “nice guy” rather than his musical accolades.

Liam said: “Honestly, just being a nice guy. I’d rather be known for being a nice guy than anything else.”

Tributes to Liam Payne

SHOCKED friends, family and fans have paid heartbreaking tributes to Liam as news of the singer's death circulated across the world.

“He was always a joy, had time for everyone, polite, grateful, and was always humble.”

BBC Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball reacted to the “devastating news” on her show today and told fans she hugged her own son Woody tight this morning.

JLS band member Marvin Humes reflected on his memories with the singer, sharing: “I first met Liam in 2008 with the JLS boys whilst auditioning for X Factor..he was 14 years old..

“We instantly clicked and looked at him as a little brother..that year it worked out for us but not for him and then 2 years later he went back to audition and One Direction was born..the rest is history..

“Absolutely heartbroken by the tragic news..Liam you wanted to be a global superstar and you did it bro..just can’t believe that things have ended this way..it’s shocking..my thoughts and prayers are with all your family and friends brother..RIP.”

“My heart goes out to your family parents and sisters and your son Bear and your 1D brothers.

“10th October we met and we started out that evening as 5 families into one big one 1D family thank you for all the laughs bro watch down on all your family and mind them lots of love kiddo x x x 1D 4 LIFE x x x”

‘Come on’ – BBC anger Ireland fans by mistakenly labelling Caoimhin Kelleher ‘Northern Irish’

THE BBC irritated Republic of Ireland fans with an innocent if sloppy error regarding Caoimhin Kelleher’s nationality.

The British broadcasting giant featured the Cork native in its transfer gossip column.

Wexford-based supporter Keith Holden was among those to post his anger on X[/caption]

The Beeb cited SunSport’s story on how Chelsea are eyeing up the 25-year-old despite already having TEN goalkeepers on their books.

In the BBC column it was reported that Chelsea are plotting a summer bid for Liverpool and ‘Northern Ireland’ goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

It should be noted that the error was quickly corrected.

But nonetheless instances like this do always provoke a bit of ire especially given the BBC is held to a higher standard than any other member of the British press.

Keith Holden tweeted in response: “Come on BBC FFS Liverpool manager Arne Slot is willing to sell Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker, 31, and Northern Ireland’s Caoimhin Kelleher, 25, next summer.”

The mislabelling of Kelleher was also carried across a few international websites.

Kelleher does look set to finally leave Anfield at the end of the season when the Reds welcome new shot-stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

That signing is likely to see Kelleher, who has been superb between the sticks for Liverpool following the injury to Alisson, fall down to THIRD in the pecking order.

That’s despite him starring in the team in recent weeks.

Kelleher has no interest in sitting on the bench in the future, and almost left over the summer with Nottingham Forest among the clubs who reportedly led the way for his services.

Now Chelsea, who are in the market for a top keeper, are tracking the player.

Sources told SunSport that one sticking point is the fact that Liverpool aren’t keen to sell such a good player to a potential title rival.

But if Chelsea match the €35million valuation the club have placed on the player they might be left with little choice.

Chelsea’s pursuit of the player is set to be matched by two Italian giants.

Juventus and Napoli are both monitoring Kelleher but he is believed to prefer the option of staying in the Premier League if a deal can be done.

That would see Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca ending up with a staggering ELEVEN goalkeepers.

Those would include Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Marcus Bettinelli, Djordje Petrovic, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Mike Penders, Gabriel Slonina, Luke Campbell, Ted Curd and Teddy Sharman-Lowe.

The West Londoners also have Lucas Bergstrom and Eddie Beach, who are out of contract in June.

School bus with children on board crashes off icy road as snow takes grip across Ireland amid five weather alerts

A GROUP of schoolchildren had a lucky escape from injury after their school bus left the road and landed in a ditch this morning.

The bus was travelling on icy roads at the time of the incident as temperatures dropped as low as -4C in some parts of the country today.

The PSNI were called to the scene on the Tattygare Road in Lisbellaw, Co Fermanagh this morning.

Fermanagh is currently the only county in Ireland that is not facing any weather warnings, with the UK Met Office placing Antrim, Armagh, Down, Tyrone and Derry under a Status Yellow weather warning from 4pm this evening until 10am tomorrow morning.

They warned: “Icy stretches will lead to some difficult travelling conditions.”

The PSNI have confirmed that there were no serious injuries reported following the Education Authority school bus crash.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police attended a single vehicle road traffic collision involving a bus in the Tattygare Road area of Lisbellaw this morning, Wednesday. No serious injuries were reported.”

It is understood that all the children who were on the bus at the time of the incident were taken off the vehicle quickly and their parents were informed.

Pictures of the scene show a layer of frost and ice coating the road.

The bus appears to have left the road and ended up in a ditch dividing the road and a field, but there is no visible damage to the vehicle in the snaps.

Sharing snaps of the incident on social media, a passerby warned people that the roads in the area were in “bad condition”.

Met Eireann has issued four separate warnings for counties across Ireland over the next two days as the freezing weather makes its mark.

A Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning for the entire country will come into place at 8pm tonight and remain until 12pm tomorrow afternoon.

Met Eireann warned of “hazardous” conditions on roads and paths alongside some travel disruption due to the “widespread frost and icy stretches”.

A Status Yellow snow and ice warning will kick in for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wexford, Wicklow, Munster and Galway from 9pm tonight and remain in place until tomorrow afternoon.

SNOWFALL EXPECTED

Met Eireann confirmed that they are expecting snowfall accumulations, which will cause hazardous travelling conditions, poor visibility, travel disruption and animal welfare issues.

A 12-hour Status Orange snow and rain warning will come into place for Cork and Waterford at midnight tonight.

Met Eireann warned that flooding is possible and added: “Heavy rain transitioning to sleet and snow.”

A status orange snow and ice warning will kick in at midnight tonight and stay in place until noon tomorrow for Clare, Limerick and Tipperary.

Met Eireann said: “Significant snowfall accumulations expected.”

WARNING FOR DRIVERS

Those living or travelling within these counties are being warned of very difficult travelling conditions and disruption, poor visibility, disruption and delays to public transport, difficult conditions underfoot and animal welfare issues.

Motorists have been urged to take extra care and plan their journeys on the roads due to the freezing weather.

A PSNI spokesperson warned: “Please take extra care on the roads this morning especially on those which may not have been gritted.

“Clear your windscreen of ice and snow before you set off and remember to slow down and increase the distance between you and the car ahead.”

AVOID TRAVEL

An Garda Siochana advised people to consider whether the journey is “absolutely necessary” and urged those who can use public transport to prioritise it over travelling by car.

In their ‘Be Winter Ready’ campaign, Gardai said: “It takes longer to stop a vehicle in snow or on icy roads so slow down and allow extra distance between you and the vehicle in front.”

They urged road users to keep a “sharp lookout” for other road users, keep windows clear of snow during their journey and to use the highest gear possible to reduce engine revs and help avoid wheel spin.

Drivers were also urged to manoeuvre gently and avoid harsh braking, acceleration or steering as these can induce a skid.

Gardai added: “When travelling downhill, especially through a series of bends, select a low gear as early as possible and allow your speed to reduce using the brake pedal gently.”
