‘HopScotch changed my son’s life,’ dad hails our Christmas campaign

WHEN John Burke went on holiday with HopScotch, his father was braced for a phone call asking him to fetch his lad home.

John, ten, could be quite shy and his dad William Dobbie was unsure how well he would cope with being away from the family overnight for the first time.

His dad was chuffed with how well is boy handled his first trip away by himself.[/caption]

But the phone never rang and the trip proved to be exactly what John needed to break out of his shell.

The family, who live in Bishopbriggs, have watched their boy blossom since returning in the summer and credit HopScotch — which sends hundreds of kids on much-needed breaks every year — for this.

William, 31, below with John, said: “I didn’t think he was going to stay, to be honest with you. I thought he would go and I’d get a call and have to go and pick him up.

“I’d said to my partner and my mum that I’d give him two days before he’d phone me.

“He’d been away on holiday with his mum before and would phone me every night.

“And he’s gone somewhere with my mum and my stepdad before, but I think he was only about two years old then.

“He proved me wrong, though. It was a really good feeling to know he was enjoying himself.

“The adults who were there had a WhatsApp group that they posted pictures to, so that put my mind at ease.”

John had found out about HopScotch after attending a kids’ club at the Whiterose Community Hall in Glasgow’s east end.

The project allows youngsters to be active and play games with their friends in a safe setting with adult supervision. There’s also a quiet area where kids can take part in more relaxed activities such as arts and crafts, board- games and baking.

When John was then asked if he would like to go one step further and make the holiday, to Ardvullin, he was super-keen after hearing about all the unique adventure activities on offer.

But it was also quite a daunting prospect to be mixing with other people he had never met before, when he was going to be so far away from home, without family, for the first time.

William said: “He goes to school in a different area from where he lives and so doesn’t have as many friends here.

“Since he got back from HopScotch, he’s been interacting more with other kids. It brought him out of his shell. He’s the same as all the kids, he’s always on the computer. But now he is starting to go out a bit more with pals, which is great.”

A HopScotch trip involves loads of fun activities, such as watersports and climbing.

And that was right up John’s street because his dad says he is a bit of a daredevil who enjoys taking part in anything that others might deem risky.

William said: “He loves water and he loves swimming so he had a fantastic time doing all that stuff while away.

“He’s a thrillseeker, for sure. He loves going to amusement and theme parks and when I’m with him he wants to go on all the big rides.

“I don’t know where he gets that from because it’s definitely not from me.

“He’s matured since going away with HopScotch, too. Even in the way he speaks to me, he’s got a bit more respect and it’s noticeable the difference it’s made.

“He learned how to do more things on his own, too, which has given him more confidence.”

William now wishes that every youngster who needs it has the opportunity to go on the sort of adventure that HopScotch offers.

Kids usually only get the opportunity to go once, so that as many people as possible get a chance to experience it for themselves.

But John enjoyed himself so much that he’s already dreaming about finding a way to go back again.

His dad joked: “He said somebody had mentioned to him about me doing an interview about HopScotch. His first question to me was, ‘am I going back?’.

“I would recommend it to anyone who gets the opportunity to go.”

Four-week old baby found with cocaine in his system

AN ILL baby was found to have cocaine in his system while traces of the drug were found on two dummies.

The four-week-old was rushed to hospital after becoming “unwell” at a property in Glasgow‘s Pollokshaws on May 22 last year.

He had been cared for at the time by Yasmin Manzur, 27 and 29-year-old Connor McBride.

A police search uncovered traces of the drug on dummies which were kept in the kitchen and living room.

Manzur and McBride pled guilty today at Glasgow Sheriff Court to causing unnecessary suffering or injury to the boy’s health.

McBride also pled guilty to a charge of possession of cocaine.

The court heard that Mazur woke to find the baby unwell at 4.30am and an ambulance was called.

The boy was taken to hospital where his condition deteriorated and he was placed in an incubator and ventilator.

Prosecutor Danielle McGuinness said: “A urine sample was taken and it tested positive for cocaine.”

The hospital contacted the police and a search warrant was issued for the property.

Manzur told officers that she “did not know how this happened” while McBride was unwilling to co-operate without legal advice.

A search took place in the early hours of May 24.

Miss McGuinness said: “Swabs were taken from the kitchen, coffee table and bed side table which had traces of cocaine.

“There were two dummies found on the kitchen work top and in the living room.

“They were taken for analysis and contained an unquantified amount of cocaine.”

Manzur, now of Newton Mearns, near Glasgow, and McBride were both arrested then provided “no comment” interviews.

The hearing was told that there was no long term harm to the baby.

Gemma Elder, defending first offender Manzur, told the court that her client lost her job of six years at a building company due to the “unknown outcome” of the case.

Garvey McArdle, defending McBride, stated that his client is now studying to become a drugs counsellor.

Sentence was deferred pending background reports until next month by Sheriff Tony Kelly who granted the pair bail meantime.

He said: “The court is considering custody for both of you – I should not pre-judge the outcome before I have reports.

“You both put the child in grave danger.”

How every Man Utd manager fared in first Premier League game as boss as Ruben Amorim prepares for Ipswich clash

MANCHESTER UNITED are preparing for yet another new era at Old Trafford.

Ruben Amorim becomes the latest manager tasked with bringing back the glory days since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

The Portuguese gaffer replaced Erik ten Hag and begins away at Ipswich[/caption]

Amorim had to wait until the international break to leave Sporting and officially replace Erik ten Hag, who was axed after two years on October 28.

But nearly a month later and following Ruud van Nistelrooy’s interim spell, the wait is virtually over for Red Devils fans to see Amorim take charge of their side.

His United travel to Portman Road on Sunday afternoon to face an Ipswich team who beat Tottenham last time out – while Van Nistelrooy signed off with a comfortable 3-0 win over another newly-promoted side in Leicester.

The pressure will be on the new Portuguese arrival to get off to a winning start.

But how did Manchester United’s previous bosses get on in their opening Premier League matches in the dugout?

RUUD VAN NISTELROOY, 2024

Van Nistelrooy began and ended his four-match stint with wins over Leicester.

But his first league clash in the dugout was a home tie against Chelsea, which finished 1-1.

Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot but Moises Caicedo cancelled it out to share the points at Old Trafford.

That would be the only game Van Nistelrooy did not win in charge as he masterminded a 2-0 victory over PAOK in the Europa League as well.

ERIK TEN HAG, 2022

One could say it was doomed from the beginning for Ten Hag after his absolutely abysmal start.

United lost 2-1 at home to Brighton in his debut match as Pascal Gross grabbed a double.

And when the Red Devils were thrashed 4-0 at Brentford in Ten Hag’s next match, there was genuine fears he would be sacked after two matches.

RALF RANGNICK, 2021

The German was not exactly the most popular appointment as interim manager when he took over in December 2021.

There were definitely plenty of complaints about his spell at Old Trafford – but in fairness, he did make a solid start.

Rangnick led United to a 1-0 home win over Crystal Palace with Fred getting the only goal 13 minutes from time.

MICHAEL CARRICK, 2021

Van Nistelrooy is not the only temporary boss to face Chelsea in his first match – and not the only one to draw 1-1.

Carrick replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer briefly in 2021 when the Norwegian was axed after the 4-1 defeat to Watford.

The former midfielder had a tough pair of Prem fixtures – Chelsea away and Arsenal at home.

But he took four points, thanks to Jadon Sancho’s goal in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge then Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo inspired a 3-2 win over the Gunners before Rangnick stepped in.

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, 2018

Solskjaer’s first Premier League match was a visit to one of his former clubs – Cardiff City.

And he got off to the best start imaginable when Marcus Rashford fired United ahead in the third minute.

Things got better and better with Ander Herrera, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard scoring twice in a 5-1 victory.

The Norwegian went unbeaten in his first 12 league games, winning ten to help him land the job on a permanent basis.

JOSE MOURINHO, 2016

Like Solskjaer, Mourinho also got off to a fantastic start in the Premier League.

He won his first three games, including an opening day victory at Bournemouth, winning 3-1 with goals from Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Red Devils shot to the top of the table after the win but would be no match for Manchester City in the title race that season.

LOUIS VAN GAAL, 2014

It was a disaster for Van Gaal in his first game – a 2-1 defeat to Swansea City at Old Trafford.

And things did not get better soon after for the Dutchman with draws against Sunderland and Burnley before he finally got his first Premier League win over QPR.

In fairness, he did have to start a back three of Tyler Blackett, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling against the Swans, with Lingard and Javier Hernandez also being forced off with injury.

RYAN GIGGS, 2014

The legendary winger stepped in to finish off the ill-fated 2013-14 season, replacing David Moyes for the final four Premier League games.

That started with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Norwich at Old Trafford with Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata grabbing two each while Carrick started in midfield.

Player-manager Giggs then lost 1-0 at Sunderland, beat Hull 3-1 and finished his brief tenure with a 1-1 draw away to Southampton.

DAVID MOYES, 2013

David Moyes showed Van Gaal how to mastermind a win over Swansea, beating the Welsh side 4-1 away.

Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck both scored twice for a star-studded United side which included Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Carrick.

But the Red Devils’ Premier League form under Moyes quickly unravelled with defeats against Liverpool, Manchester City and West Brom in his first six matches.

SIR ALEX FERGUSON, 1992

A 2-1 loss to Sheffield United at Bramall Lane kicked off a new era for English football as the first-ever Premier League match.

Brian Deane had the honour of scoring the first-ever Premier League goal in the fifth minute and added a second via the penalty spot before half-time.

Mark Hughes pulled one back after the break but it was not enough to prevent defeat.

Despite the setback, United went on to win the league that season – although it would take something remarkable for Amorim to follow suit come May

Iconic BBC fantasy series returning to screens – 40 years after debut episode

THE BBC has announced that it will be screening a classic series as part of its Christmas schedule.

The screening of The Box of Delights will mark the 40th anniversary of the beloved adaptation of John Masefield’s children’s book.

The Box of Delights was first released in 1984 and had a huge budget for a kids series at that time[/caption]

It is an adaptation of John Masefield’s children’s book[/caption]

The ambitious fantasy series originally aired on BBC One in the winter of 1984 and had a staggering budget of £1m, the biggest ever for a children’s series at the time.

The story is a classic good vs evil tale of the schoolboy Kay Harker, who finds himself protecting a box with magical properties from an evil wizard.

Actor Patrick Troughton, who viewers may know as the second Doctor Who, played the keeper of the box, Cole Hawlings.

The youngest star of the show was Devin Stanfield who plays the lead role. It was the peak of a short-lived career for the child star.

Speaking years later, Devin spoke of the challenges in bringing the far fetched fantasy to life.

The special effects that viewers can see in the BBC Four repeat really pushed the limits of what was possible at the time.

Not all of the scenes could be made with special effects though and Devin remembers bravely putting himself forward for most of his own stunts.

He told The Guardian: “They were going to use a stunt double for the scene where the pony runs up to the stockade, but I insisted I could ride bareback even though I’d only been on a horse a handful of times.

“There’s a shot following the horse from behind where you see it stumble slightly – that’s really me riding. I said yes to everything – ‘Can you wield a sword?’ ‘Yeah, of course!’”

After The Box of Delights, Devin did audition for other parts but called time on his short acting career when he lost out to Christian Bale for the lead role in Steven Spielberg’s 1988 film Empire of the Sun.

Devin is still in the industry but now works behind the camera as a production manager and technical director.

As well as being a fan favourite The Box of Delights series also received several awards including three BAFTAs.

For many viewers the BBC adaptation of the book remains a Christmas favourite and, alongside the seasonal repeat, all six episodes are also being released on Blu-Ray.

This will include a new accompanying documentary film, Time and Tide – Making The Box of Delights.

Xbox players are losing nine games at the end of November including four 80+ rated titles

XBOX recently announced the new games that are coming to Xbox Game Pass and, in the same blog, told us which games are leaving.

There are six games coming to Xbox Game Pass in the second half of November, but overall the Game Pass library is shrinking.

The gripping story of The Walking Dead might be more to your taste[/caption]

Nine games will be leaving Xbox Game Pass by the end of November, including four 80+ rated games.

The first highly-rated game leaving this month is Remnant: From the Ashes, a soulslike from 2019.

While it doesn’t reach the highs of FromSoftware’s games, with an 81 rating, people really enjoyed this fresh take on the genre.

Another highly-rated game is Rollerdrome, which also had an 81 rating.

Rollerdrome was praised for its unique concept as a third-person shooter where your character is always on roller skates.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season is an 80-rated visual novel based on the same world of the graphic novel and TV.

This is the fourth and final mainline entry in the series where your choices decide who lives and who dies.

The final and highest-rated game that’s leaving Game Pass this month is Coral Island with an 82 rating.

This is a cosy farming sim that was first released in 2023, where you farm, fish and make friends on a tropical island.

Here are all of the games leaving Xbox Game Pass on Saturday, November 30, 2024.

  • Conan Exiles – Cloud, console & PC
  • Coral Island – PC
  • Hello Neighbour 2 – Cloud, console & PC
  • Remnant: From the Ashes – Cloud, console & PC
  • Rollerdrome – Cloud, console & PC
  • Soccer Store – Cloud, console & PC
  • Spirit of the North – Cloud, console & PC
  • The Walking Dead: The Final Season – PC
  • While the Iron’s Hot – Cloud, console & PC

Passing Up Games

With the news that PS Portal players are now able to stream games directly from PS Plus, Xbox Game Pass feels like a far worse deal.

Since June, the offerings have been much worse than they were before, with only Game Pass Ultimate members getting a strong library of games.

We hope Xbox will increase the quality of the service soon, but we don’t hold out hope.
