Former England star named as fans’ favourite to take over Match of the Day with pundit more popular than Gary Lineker

FANS want a former England international to become the next Match of the Day host.

Gary Lineker confirmed earlier this month that he will step down as host of the BBC highlights programme at the end of the season after 25 years in the role.

The BBC are yet to confirm who will replace Gary Lineker as Match of the Day host

A number of broadcasters have been linked with the role including the likes of Mark Chapman, Alex Scott, Gabby Logan and Kelly Somers.

But a poll carried out from Ipsos of football fans between the ages of 18 and 75 has revealed a left-field name as the viewers’ choice for the position.

That individual is Alan Shearer.

A total of 71 per cent have a “favourable” view of him as a pundit, while 22 per cent would like to see him as the next host of Match of the Day.

That is a higher figure than any other candidate – with the next best being Chapman at 20 per cent, followed by Scott at 12 and Logan at 10.

Ian Wright has the next highest favourability percentage as a pundit at 65.

Lineker is down in third at 57, narrowly ahead of Roy Keane [56], Gary Neville [55] and Micah Richards [54].

Recent reports have claimed Shearer penned a new deal with the BBC in the wake of Lineker’s departure.

He also joked he would not sign an extension on Match of the Day if pal Richards was named as Lineker’s successor.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football, he said: “That is a f***ing massive concern by the way [Richards hosting Match of the Day].

“I’m not signing my new contract if you’re a presenter by the way.”

Fans’ favourite pundit is also Shearer

Shearer’s former England team-mate Paul Gascoigne recently tipped the Newcastle legend to take the Match of the Day job because he “loves a bit of money”.

Premier League record scorer Shearer has been a pundit on the BBC show for nearly two decades.

He has also worked for Amazon Prime on their football coverage.

Who could replace Gary Lineker as MOTD host?

GARY LINEKER dropped the shock news that he is QUITTING Match of the Day.

The popular presenter, 63, took over hosting duties on the flagship BBC programme from Des Lynam in 1999.

But after more than 25 years in the studio hotseat, he has called time on his MOTD gig.

But as part of a huge shake-up, the BBC is considering rotating the presenters on a weekly basis.

So with Lineker vacating the chair, new names will step into his giant boots. But who could they be?

MARK CHAPMAN

Chapman, 51, is the obvious early favourite to follow on from Lineker as MOTD presenter.

He already has the gig as MOTD2 host on a Sunday night plus landed the presenting job for the new BBC Champions League highlights show.

ALEX SCOTT

Scott gets the nod from the Beeb bosses when Lineker is away.

The former right-back, 40, is used to presenting the Saturday night show as well as live match coverage – plus ticks the box as a former England international.

GABBY LOGAN

Like Scott, Logan, 51, is one of the understudies to step in when Lineker is not available.

She has done most gigs since joining the BBC in 2007, including Olympics, Sports Personality of the Year and Final Score.

MICAH RICHARDS

Lineker’s top pick to replace him is exuberant former Man City defender Richards.

The departing host told his close pal, 36, on their Stick to Football podcast: “I’d love to see you take over Micah, I think you’d be brilliant in the chair.”

JASON MOHAMMAD

Mohammad could earn the “promotion” from Final Score to Match of the Day.

The 51-year-old Welshman – who took over from Logan in 2013 – is one of the BBC’s top earners already and is more senior than fellow Final Score and BBC Sport broadcaster Kelly Somers, who could in theory become the main live host for the afternoon slot.

JEFF STELLING

He couldn’t, could he? While Lineker has been the face of Saturday night TV for football fans for years, the face of the afternoons was Stelling in his role as Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday presenter.

He would bring plenty of on-screen charisma, wit and legendary TV expertise – but at nearly 70 and currently with talkSPORT, the Hartlepool fan would not be a cheap or long-term appointment.

Desperate Putin may unleash CHEMICAL weapons in weeks – losing prized region is dagger to his heart, says ex-Nato chief

RATTLED Vladimir Putin is all talk on nukes but could unleash deadly chemical weapons within weeks, an ex-NATO commander has warned.

Hamish de Bretton-Gordon insisted the Kremlin’s desperation to retake the strategic region of Kursk could push Putin to deploy chemical agents on a devastating scale.

Pointing to the region’s symbolic importance for Russia, the chemical weapons expert argued losing control of Kursk would be “a dagger” to the Russian despot’s heart.

He told The Sun’s Never Mind The Ballots: “Putin is absolutely rattled.

“He could have lost up to 700,000 soldiers already.

“Now, with Ukraine hitting back using US ATACMS and British Storm Shadow missiles, he knows his forces in Kursk are sitting ducks.”

Kyiv launched its first ATACMS strikes this week, hitting a Russian military depot in Bryansk on the 1,000th day of the brutal war.

The UK’s Storm Shadow missiles struck again two days later, enraging Moscow and sparking retaliation that saw the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile for the first time since the war began.

Putin also green-lit a new nuclear doctrine, setting out new conditions under which the country would consider using its arsenal.

The former NATO‘s commanding officer dismissed the nuclear threats as “bluff and bluster,” adding that NATO intelligence and advanced weapons systems make it nearly impossible for the Kremlin to carry out a successful tactical nuclear strike.

But warning of an escalating chemical threat, he said: “The Russians are using chemical weapons on an industrial scale in the East at the moment, using a thing called chloropicrin, which was the first chemical weapon…

“If Putin substituted that chloropicrin with the Novichok that he used in Salisbury, then, thousands of people could be killed.”

Mr de Bretton-Gordon also stressed the battle for Kursk is pivotal, with Ukraine’s ability to hold the region potentially shaping the war’s outcome.

He explained: “Whoever holds Kursk come Christmas time will be on the front foot for the expected Trump negotiations and ceasefire at the end of January next year.”

He urged NATO to provide Ukraine with every possible resource during this critical period, adding: “Hopefully these last four weeks are really beneficial to Ukraine.

“And hopefully it’s better late than never rather than too late.”

On Sunday, US President Joe Biden authorised Ukraine to fire the American rockets inside Russia.

The Kremlin said it marked the crossing of a red line – officially putting nuclear retaliation on the table.

And footage last night revealed the moment Ukraine reportedly fired Storm Shadow rockets inside Russia for the first time.

The unverified video showed a resident in Kursk pointing at the sky before loud booms are heard in the background.

Meanwhile other aerial footage purporting to show the strike captured rockets exploding a site in Kursk with an underground control room, Ukrainian defence experts said.

Giant plumes of smoke could be seen billowing from the site, before an orange fireball engulfed the building.

Reports suggest the attack targeted a location where North Korean generals could have been present alongside senior Russian military leaders.

Russia’s defence ministry was forced to admit on Thursday that at least two of the Storm Shadow rockets had been fired by Ukraine.

Fragments of the bunker-busting rockets were found in the village of Marine, Kursk, on Wednesday, it is understood.

Up to 12 missiles were launched by a Ukrainian aircraft, according to reports.

Britain’s Storm Shadow missiles are a nightmare for enemies as they are capable of dodging air defences.

The £800,000 weapons – which were already being fired within Ukraine – use GPS to precisely hit targets, and can travel at 600mph.

Emmerdale mystery as soap episode ‘disappears’ leaving fans scratching their heads

EMMERDALE viewers have been left fuming after an episode of the soap never became available to watch on ITV this morning.

The show is usually broadcast at 7pm on weeknights, but episodes receive an early release on ITVX in the morning.

However, today the first-look episode of Emmerdale never became available on the streaming platform.

Fans took to X to try and find out what went wrong, with one asking: “Is anyone else’s Emmerdale not showing up on ITVX?”

In response, someone hit out at ITV, saying: “Like they’re trying to wind us up even more.”

Another added: “Can’t get it on STV player either.”

A third complained: “Same here! Annoying.”

On top of that, Wednesday night’s episode of Emmerdale also disappeared from ITVX.

ITV responded to a tweet complaining about the tech issue, saying: “Hiya. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

“We are aware that yesterday episode of Emmerdale is missing and are doing our best to have this content available for you as soon as possible.”

Viewers were especially looking forward to tuning in for today’s episode of the soap as it will follow on from last night’s shocking affair.

Cain Dingle cheated on his wife Moira with her own sister, Ruby Fox Miligan, in the most recent installment of the soap.

Moira has been struggling with serious health complications and recently got brain surgery, leaving her in a fragile state in the hospital.

While she tries to fight her way back to health, Cain started to crack under the pressure and got into a boozy fight before shacking up with Moira’s sister.

After the pair’s secret tryst Cain warned Ruby “No one finds out about this” before smashing up his garage in a fit of remorse.

Emmerdale fans were keen to see if Cain’s secret would be discovered in today’s early release episode, but it seems they will have to wait until it airs tonight.

The six surprising signs you’re at risk of Alzheimer’s – from dressing scruffy to swearing

ALZHEIMER’S disease can be a devastating condition for those who have it as well as their families.

The condition, which is the most common type of dementia, affects everyone differently.

It’s currently estimated that almost a million people are living with dementia in the UK, projected to rise to 1.4 million by 2040.

It was announced that former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott passed away at the age of 86 following a battle with Alzheimer’s.

The powerhouse Labour politician – who served as Deputy PM from 1997 to 2007 – been living in a care home following a stroke in 2019.

He died “peacefully” surrounded by family.

In a statement announcing his death, Lord Prescott’s wife and two sons said: “We would like to thank the amazing NHS doctors and nurses who cared for him after his stroke in 2019 and the dedicated staff at the care home where he passed away after latterly living with Alzheimer’s.

“In lieu of flowers and if you wish to do so, you can donate to Alzheimer’s Research UK.”

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s in the early stages of the disease can be subtle at first.

But over time they become more pronounced and begin to interfere with a person’s daily life.

You may become aware of your loved one having the disease by subtle changes to their behaviour.

Your painstakingly polite loved one may pick up a new swearing habit or start dressing sloppy after previously taking great care with their appearance.

Here are six early signs of the disease to know.

1. Giving out money

Elderly people in general are at high risk of being scammed.

But research has shown that giving out money could be a sign of early Alzheimer’s.

It involved 67 adults around the age of 70.

Each person was paired with another participant that they had never met before.

They were handed $10 (£8) to share as they pleased.

Researchers discovered that those who were at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s gave more money to the person they had just met.

It means those who have the disease are more vulnerable to forking out cash.

Dr Duke Han, a neuropsychology professor at USC who led the research, said: “Trouble handling money is thought to be one of the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease, and this finding supports that notion.”

2. Changes to humour

Researchers at University College London discovered that a change to your sense of humour could mean you are at risk of Alzheimer’s.

They revealed people with the disease are more likely to enjoy slapstick over more complicated forms of comedy.

They gathered friends and family of 48 people with the disease and asked them questions about their loved ones’ sense of humour.

In the study they were asked whether their relatives enjoyed shows like Mr Bean, or more satirical shows like South Park.

Then they were asked if there was a difference between their humour 15 years ago.

The research revealed that Alzheimer’s patients started to prefer slapstick jokes around nine years before the start of typical dementia symptoms.

3. Dressing scruffy

Family members of someone who has Alzheimer’s know that sufferers can struggle to get ready in the morning.

Patients may choose clashing clothes, or wear things that are not weather-appropriate.

And research published in Sociology of Health and Illness in 2018, shows this could also be an early sign of what is to come.

They studied 32 people across three care homes and 15 regular homes in Kent.

Researchers interviewed 29 family carers and relatives and 28 care home staff to see how their patient’s dress.

They discovered that Alzheimer’s could caused people to start dressing differently.

4. Bad parking

Alzheimer’s affects peoples motor skills – meaning as their condition progresses their driving can get worse.

It slows down people’s reactions, making them bad at parking.

Researchers from Washington University in St Louis studied driving habits in 139 people – half of which were diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s.

The study found those with the disease were more likely to make abrupt changes in direction and drive slower.

The results were so significant that they were able to create a model to predict if people had Alzheimer’s based on their driving alone.

It predicted cases accurately in 90 per cent of the people.

Ways to lower your risk of dementia

There are things you can do to reduce your own risk of developing dementia, including Alzheimer's.

No single behaviour is guaranteed to prevent dementia – but there’s lots of evidence to suggest that making tweaks to your lifestyle choices could affect your risk.

Dementia risk is lowest in people who have healthy behaviours in mid-life – from the age of 40 to 65 – according Alzheimer’s Society.

Here are a few easy changes you can make:

  1. Exercise regularly to boost your heart health and circulation and help maintain a healthy weight.
  2. Drink less alcohol – try to have no more than 14 units of alcohol a week, about one pint of beer or a small glass of wine each day. If you regularly drink much more than this, you are increasing your risk of damage to your brain and other organs, and so increasing your risk of dementia.
  3. Don’t smoke – it does a lot of harm to the circulation of blood around the body, particularly the blood vessels in the brain, as well as the heart and lungs.
  4. Engaging in social activities to help to build up your brain’s ability to relieve stress and improve your mood – depression and social isolation have both been linked to dementia.
  5. Manage health conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, which can increase the risk of getting dementia.
  6. Protect your eyesight and hearing – vision loss increases a person’s risk of developing dementia. The same goes for hearing loss, which can also be an early symptom of dementia.
  7. Wear a helmet – as traumatic brain injuries  can start a process in the brain where the substances that cause Alzheimer’s disease build up around the injured area.

Source: Alzheimer’s Society

5. Swearing

Swearing is another sign that someone is developing Alzheimer’s.

When people have the disease, the filter in their brain that would usually tell them the correct situations to swear in is no longer as strong.

This can lead to awkward situations such as swearing in front of children.

Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles, found 18 per cent of people with Alzheimer’s used the word ‘f**k’ when prompted to name words beginning with ‘f’.

6. Having no filter

Like with swearing, as someone develops Alzheimer’s their ability to filter what to say becomes hazy.

That’s because the part of the brain that controls our internal filter, the frontal prefrontal cortex, is known to shrink with age, according to experts.

This means patients can say or do outlandishly inappropriate things without realising it is wrong.

Alzheimer’s Society explained: “These situations can be very confusing, distressing, shocking or frustrating for someone with dementia, as well as for those close to them.

“The person with dementia may not understand why their behaviour is considered inappropriate. It’s very unlikely that they are being inappropriate on purpose.”

Player lands rarest hand in poker to scoop life-changing jackpot win at iconic Las Vegas venue

A POKER player landed a life-changing windfall with a rarely seen poker hand.

The gambler – playing in an Ultimate Texas Hold’em at the iconic Caesars Palace in Las Vegas – travelled with family before opting to test his luck at the tables.

He then credited his family as his ‘good luck charm’ after scooping the monster jackpot, Caesars Entertainment said.

The betting man – known only as Donald C – landed an incredible Royal Flush during his stay – the best possible hand a player can hit in most variants of poker.

A Royal Flush is when a player holds a 10, jack, queen, king and ace, all of which are the same suit.

To put into context how rare it is, the odds of hitting one are roughly 649,739/1.

Donald, who’d travelled from Toronto, Canada, scooped an almost unbelievable $763,688 as a result of hitting the ultimate hand.

So in essence, it’s like placing just over a dollar on it landing, the amount he’s pocketed.

And more travelling is on the cards (pun intended) for Donald as he confirmed his winnings would allow him and his family to see the world.
