BBC’s Glenn Campbell makes shock admission as he gives update on brain tumour battle
BRAVE TV presenter Glenn Campbell revealed he reported on General and Scottish elections – without the “faintest idea” a tumour was growing inside his brain.
BBC Scotland’s political editor only found out he had terminal brain cancer after a serious bike fall in June last year.
But he was left stunned when experts said he probably had the tumour for at least five years – which would have covered Boris Johnson’s 2019 Westminster victory before Nicola Sturgeon’s SNP returned to power in 2021.
Glenn, 48, said: “Doctors have told me it had been quietly growing in my head for five years, perhaps longer.
“It made me think of all the things I’ve done with a brain tumour without having the faintest idea.”
The married dad-of-two bust 10 ribs when he fell on a bike ride to the village of Gifford near his home in East Lothian. last summer.
But six weeks after his recovery he suffered a seizure which made him feel “drunk” before being rushed back into hospital where a scan revealed he had an incurable tumour and told he had around a year to live.
Glenn then had to undergo a five hour brain op at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh on his 10th wedding anniversary to journalist wife Claire, quipping: “Brain surgery is a funny way to celebrate.”
But Islay-born Glenn receives “good news” that although incurable, his cancer – called an Oligodendroglioma – wasn’t the most aggressive type first feared.
On the BBC Scotland documentary My Brain Tumour and Me screened tonight (Wed) at 7pm, he explained: “In that moment my average life expectancy went from months to years.”
However Glenn suffered further setbacks when he had a seizure at work, which required him to be put into a medically induced coma.
Then his bucket list wish of completing all of Scotland’s 282 Munros – mountains over 3,000ft high – hit a snag in March this year when he collapsed at the Ben Lawers car park near Killin, Perthshire.
Glenn even filmed harrowing footage of himself having a seizure on the munro before being airlifted to hospital.
A further scan showed “regrowth” of the tumour. He admits: “That’s not what we expected, especially as we’ve been poisoning it for months now with radiotherapy and chemotherapy.”
But the documentary ends on a high note revealing that his most recent scan in September was “clearer than before”.
Glenn said: “I am now thinking about extending my bucket list. I didn’t think I would have a 50th birthday, now I’m thinking it could be possible I might be here for my 60th.”

‘It sends a bad signal to the sport’ says darts star as he claims Gary Anderson success has set alarm bells ringing
GARY ANDERSON’S success is a “bad signal” for darts according to rival Vincent van der Voort.
The Flying Scotsman delivered a stunning Grand Slam run eventually ended by Luke Littler in the semi-finals.
Gary Anderson’s success in darts is ‘not good for the sport’[/caption]But Dutchman Van der Voort has hit out that Ando’s glory is not good for the sport.
He said on podcast Darts Draait Door: “This is obviously not how you want to see it.
“It sends a bad signal to the sport when someone like him can suddenly win a tournament like this.
“He is someone who shows up once in a while and does nothing else for it.
“You want someone to win who does everything for the sport, someone who handles it professionally.
“Anderson says everywhere he goes that he plays occasional matches and tournaments and never practices otherwise.
“That you can even visit him to see that it’s really like that.
“He basically wants to indicate that he doesn’t do anything for it.”

According to Gian van Veen, who Ando beat in the quarters, the Scot is not interested in invitations to other events like the Premier League.
He added: “The PDC would like him, but he won’t say yes to it.
“He’s been saying for years that he won’t do that anymore.
“If he would then suddenly go now, you come across badly.
“But he’s getting stubborn anyway and he’s not going to do it anyway.
“Unless he becomes world champion. Then he is going to get some calls yes.”
Van der Voort added: “But then it would also be stylish if he doesn’t go.
“Again, a bad signal for the sport, but it would also be a nice story.”

I’m A Celeb fans complain to ITV and claim GK Barry’s trial was ‘literally impossible’ saying ‘they were set up to fail’
FUMING I’m A Celebrity fans have slammed the latest brutal trial and labelled it ‘too difficult’ for GK Barry and Dean McCullough to complete.
Viewers have taken to social media to rant about the ‘impossible’ challenge faced by podcaster GK and tea-smuggling DJ Dean.
Speaking up for influencer and podcaster GK, one user commented: “She was screwed from the beginning after Dean spent the first half of the trial doing absolutely nothing.”
A second noted: “Could see her getting p***ed off with Dean but not wanting to snap at him.”
A third agreed: “It seemed waaaaay too difficult! They were set up to fail imho.”
“There was no way anyone could do that! It was extremely harsh,” wrote a fourth.
“The keys should have been numbered imo. Not surprised they got zero,” penned another.
“Impossible for her, she didn’t even try for over 6 mins,” remarked a vexed fan.
“It was really hard for her to hold her breath for the duration of testing multiple locks on each dive, but she shouldn’t have had to because Dean wasted the first half when her water was shallower and she wouldn’t have had to hold her breath at all,” ranted a user.
Another stuck up for them: “How was she meant to get to the bottom of that water in such a small space and hold her breath while trying to unlock a padlock? Kinda ridiculous.”
One viewer concluded: “And the tube was so narrow it looked very difficult to twist round to get to the keys without getting stuck upside down. The water was really cloudy too.”
The pair – who were voted to do it by the British public – joined forces to take on Drown in the Dumps.
When they arrived at the trial, hosts Ant and Dec explained that one of them would have to go into the tank at the bottom, while the other one in the top.
Dean, who was in the top one, had to try and find the holes to find the keys, which was then dropped down to GK in the bottom one.
After just two, he shouted: “I’m a celebrity get me out of here!”
After the pair failed to win any stars, it was especially difficult for Dean to break the news to camp – especially as he’d also fallen flat in the previous day’s task.
After returning to camp, GK got emotional while talking to dancer Oti Mabuse.
While crying she said: “It’s tough in here.”
Speaking on ITV2’s spin-off show, I’m A Celebrity Unpacked, Ant and his presenting partner Declan Donnelly were quizzed by hosts Joel Dommett, Sam Thompson, and Kemi Rodgers on Dean’s double defeat.
Dec said: “We are genuinely disappointed because you are prepared to do the whole trial and you want to see the whole thing.
“There’s a lot of time gone into the trials, so when it’s called early, you’re like, ‘Oh.'”
Ant explained: “Yeah, there are loads of people that have built the trial and come up with it, they just want to see it done properly.
“Even in the past when we’ve had people not go through with it, we’ve sometimes brought the trials back because we want them to be seen.”
He didn’t hold back on his frustration, saying: “I got quite annoyed at one point because it’s a bit like, ‘If you can’t do it, you can’t do it but just try it, try it.’
“If it’s physically impossible then fine, but at least try. There was a lot of not trying for quite a few minutes and then they ran out of time.”
First look at devastating Coronation Street New Year house fire as ‘cursed’ family set to lose everything
GAIL Platt might be leaving Coronation Street but she’s leaving her curse behind as our exclusive video and pictures show.
The cobbles legend – who is played by actress Helen Worth in the ITV soap – will bow out at Christmas after 50 years on the street.
A huge fire is going to rip through the Platt family’s house in the New Year[/caption] The new soap has had a week of night shoots for the big episodes[/caption] Cast and crew watch as the house is made to look like it’s burning[/caption] Lives will be left hanging in the balance when the episodes air next year[/caption]Over that time she has been plagued with misfortune with her first husband being murdered, her second leaving her for a younger woman, and her third trying to kill her entire family as well as several neighbours.
Her fourth and fifth both met untimely ends, and her children have all suffered similar losses and dramas.
And now the curse is set to get even worse as the family home will burn down in a dramatic stunt.
The Sun exclusively revealed how the soap was planning a huge stunt for the new year with a devastating fire.
Now our exclusive video and pictures show that it’s the Platt family who will be left in tatters by the blaze.
Backstage pictures revealed that actors Lucy Fallon, Paddy Bever, Julia Goulding and Sally Carman were all filming for the huge episodes.
Local residents were warned ahead of time about the explosions and fire effects.
A source said: “New boss Kate Brooks is pulling out all the stops to make her mark on the cobbles – literally in this case.
“It’s a huge story with dramatic consequences but is focussed on the street and the community.
“There’s going to be a massive spectacle but at the heart it’s a story about the characters and how they cope with what happens – proper old school Corrie storytelling.”
Soap bosses have even been forced to warn local residents near to the Manchester set over the huge stunt and explosions.
Neighbours in Salford Quays received warnings about “loud explosions” and “fire effects” being used from today until the early hours of Friday morning.
The warning, shared in Salford Quays, revealed: “We have been given notice and warning of loud explosions and fire effects being used as part of a dramatic film shoot at Salford Quays/Trafford Park.
“Coronation Street will be reconstructing a house fire on Coronation Street Film Set, Trafford Wharf Road, Trafford Park.

“On Tuesday 19th November between the hours of 22:00-23:00 they will be recreating an explosion this will be a short bust like a firework going off with a noise of up to 100db.
Biggest soap stunts
Soaps are no stranger to dramatic stunts in the storylines. Not only do these moments create a spectacle for viewers, they also fundamentally change characters’ lives.
Here is a look at some of the biggest soap stunts from over the years.
CORONATION STREET
- Tram crash (2010): The ITV soap marked its 50th anniversary with a intense tram crash – and live episode to boot. Overall, the crash and its effects were broadcast across a week in December 2010. Its resulting chaos saw regular characters Ashley Peacock (Steven Arnold) and Molly Dobbs (Vicky Binns) die.
- Richard Hillman tries to kill the Platts (2003): Of all the men unlucky-in-love Gail tied the knot with, Richard Hillman (Brian Capron) is probably the one she regrets most in hindsight. In 2003, murderer Richard tried to kill his step-family: first by gassing them with car fumes and then driving Gail (Helen Worth), Sarah (Tina O’Brien), David (Jack P. Shepherd) and Bethany (Amy and Emily Walton) into a canal.
EASTENDERS
- Queen Vic fire (2010): In September 2010, EastEnders bid farewell to matriarch Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) as a permanent fixture on the soap – she returned as a guest before the character’s death in 2016. In the build-up to her initial exit, Peggy had trapped crack cocaine-addicted son Phil (Steve McFadden) in the Queen Vic. However, he escaped and set the boozer on fire.
- Bus crash (2017): In April 2017, a total of 11 Albert Square residents had their lives at risk in a terrifying bus crash. The stunt saw a double decker bus – the 764 to Barking – lose control and crash through the Albert Square market before hitting a low-level bridge. Notable passengers at the time included Denise Fox (Diane Parish) and Louise Mitchell (Tilly Keeper).
EMMERDALE
- James Barton’s death (2016): Interestingly about James’ (Bill Ward) death was that it came in a spiral of events. After wife Emma (Gillian Kearney) locked James up in a jealous rage, he escaped and they tussled on a bridge over the bypass. Emma pushed him and James fell into traffic, in turn causing a 12-vehicle pile up, As well as James dying, key characters including Ashley Thomas (John Middleton) and Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) were injured.
“If for any reason they do not get to do this before 23:00hrs on Tuesday 19th they will do it on Wednesday 20th between 17:00-19:00.”
The soap is currently filming for scenes into the new year, meaning fans shouldn’t expect to see the episodes for quite a while.
