THE exact dates millions will get paid benefits early including Universal Credit and PIP has been revealed.

This type of financial support is usually paid once a month but bank holidays such as Christmas Day disrupt the schedule.

The festive period disrupts the days that cliaments of Universal Credit get paid.[/caption]

The upcoming holiday period means millions of benefit claiments will not be paid on their usual dates over Christmas and New Years.

If you are due to be paid on a bank holiday you can expect to see the cash land in your bank account earlier than expected.

You should receive the money the first working day before you were supposed to have been paid.

So if you are supposed to paid on December 25, 26 or 27 you will be paid on December 24 instead.

That is because the last working day before the holidays is Tuesday Decemember 24.

The New Year bank holiday on Janaury 1 also impacts benefit claimants.

If you are due to receive your benefit on January 1, you will be paid on December 31.

Again, this is because the last working day before New Years is Tuesday December 21.

The Department for Work and Pensions said a total of 11 benefits will be impacted by the change. Which are as follows:

It is worth bearing in mind that the amount you are paid will not be changed.

You will also have to make the money last until the following month, even though you have been paid a day or two earlier.

If you think you were supposed to be paid but the money has not landed in your account, it may be worth double checking the dates.

If it is the case that the money has not been paid into your account you should get in contact with the DWP.

You can reach its Universal Credit helping on 0800 328 5644.

Changes to Universal Credit

Universal Credit is replacing six benefits under the old welfare system, commonly called legacy benefits. They are:

  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s allowance
  • Income support
  • Income-related employment and support allowance
  • Housing Benefit.

If you’re on any of these benefits now, you can choose to move over – but you might not be better off.

You should consider carefully what moving over means for your money, as you can’t move back once you’re on Universal Credit.

Using an online benefits calculator can help you compare and are free and easy to use from charities such as Turn2Us and EntitledTo, and it’s also worth asking them for advice.

You may be moved over to Universal Credit if you have a change in circumstances, like moving home, a change in working hours or a have a baby.

But eventually everyone will be moved over to Universal Credit.

Are you missing out on benefits?

YOU can use a benefits calculator to help check that you are not missing out on money you are entitled to

Charity Turn2Us’ benefits calculator works out what you could get.

Entitledto’s free calculator determines whether you qualify for various benefits, tax credit and Universal Credit.

MoneySavingExpert.com and charity StepChange both have benefits tools powered by Entitledto’s data.

You can use Policy in Practice’s calculator to determine which benefits you could receive and how much cash you’ll have left over each month after paying for housing costs.

Your exact entitlement will only be clear when you make a claim, but calculators can indicate what you might be eligible for.

The programmes are all part of the INSPIRE Wellbeing Service which supports Garda colleagues through challenging times in either their professional or personal lives.

The figures were revealed in the Garda Commissioner’s October report to the Police Authority.

A senior Garda source said the numbers showed the pressure members are under and that mental health is now a serious issue in the force.

He said: “Our rank and file Gardai are overworked and stretched to the limit on every shift.

“We don’t have enough people to deal with the day to day crime being committed on the streets.

“As many people are leaving as joining and we are not recruiting and training new members quick enough.”

The Commissioner Drew Harris confirmed there were currently 14,125 in the force – 10,075 and 4,050 female.

There are 323 in the Garda Reserve and 3,627 Garda staff members.

At the end of September, 107 members had resigned from the Force and another 174 had retired.

He said the retirement age has now been increased from 60 to 62 years from September 3, 2024.

The Commissioner also disclosed that 90 members of the Gardai are currently suspended pending investigation by An Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission and An Garda Siochana.

These included nine new cases which came to light this year.

Ten of the cases are for allegations of sexual assault/misconduct , 16 cases of theft and fraud, and 12 cases of driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Nine are accused of domestic violence and eight perverting the course of justice.

The report also revealed that 18 Gardai suffered occupational injuries while on duty in September.

‘TOUGH JOB’

Eight were the victims of assaults, and three had needle stick injuries to the body.

One member was injured in a road accident while another was injured by animals.

The source added: “Being a Garda is a tough job and every day you go out on duty you are putting your life on the line.

“We need at least 2,000 more members on the beat to cope with Ireland’s growing population.”
