A DRUNKEN Scottish air passenger who spilled booze on a child and caused a flight to be grounded has been locked up.
James Rae wreaked havoc on a TUI plane headed from Glasgow to Antalya on May 24 when he called a staff member a “gay boy” and shouted abuse at others on board.
His behaviour became so bad that the decision was made to divert the flight to Newcastle, which meant passengers faced more than a five hour delay to eventually reach their destination in Turkey.
Newcastle Crown Court heard holidaymakers waiting to get the same plane home from Antalya were also delayed by 17 hours and the cost to the flight operator was “several hundred thousands pounds”.
Rae, who had downed gin and Jagermeister, was arrested as soon as it landed and he had to be carried away because he was so drunk.
The 29-year-old plant operator, of West Bridge Street, Falkirk, pleaded guilty to being drunk on an aircraft.
Judge Stephen Earl has today jailed Rae for eight months and told him: “The one thing that stands out in this case is deterrence, not only deterring you but to ensure other people understand if you get on an aircraft and you are drunk, this is the sort of sentence you can expect.”
Judge Earl said passengers and staff on board the “metal cylinder in the sky” were put at a risk which is almost incalculable.
The judge added that some may find it “odd” that alcohol is sold in the airport and on flights and added: “It relies on people to be grown up about it, not sit with 15 pints for four people but that’s what some people do.
“Of course, lots of people don’t do that, lots of people treat it as a responsible, grown up situation.
“Just because it is available doesn’t mean it’s compulsory to drink as much as you can before the flight.”
Prosecutor Antonia Adie told the court a crew worker had noticed Rae and his partner acting “loud and jolly” as they boarded the flight but thought there was nothing wrong at first.
However, Miss Adie said: “After the aircraft was boarded and subsequently taken off, some passengers who were in close proximity to the couple had began to complain abut their language.
“At this point the partner moved away from him and was visibly upset by his actions.
“The cabin crew were setting up the bar for service when a passenger came in who had noticed the defendant was drinking his own duty-free spirits.”
The cabin manager was informed and Rae was asked to hand over the drink which would be returned to him after landing.
He was then asked to move to a different seat but refused to hand over his passport and began speaking more aggressively towards staff.
He was also verbally warned that his behaviour was becoming increasingly unacceptable.
Miss Adie told the court Rae then called one air steward a “gay boy” and said the only reason he was being picked on by staff was because he was straight.
She said: “For a little while after that the defendant didn’t understand why he was not allowed to drink his own alcohol.
“The cabin manager on the flight noticed the situation was not getting any better and the captain made the decision to divert the Newcastle due to the fact the defendant was drinking and was not able to follow lawful instructions.”
Rae then returned to his normal seat but his behaviour declined even further.
He started hitting his head off the seat in front of him which forced another passenger to intervene.
“The defendant also had a small plastic bottle which had some alcohol which he ended up spilling over a little girl sitting in front of him,” Miss Adie said.
“This then led to an argument with the children’s parents and the defendant.
“The flight landed in Newcastle at around five to seven in the evening.”
Officers were called to arrest Rae and had to be carried away due to his intoxication.
The flight was delayed in total by five hours and 23 minutes, the court heard.
The aircraft being grounded at Newcastle meant replacement cabin crew had to be called into work and the scheduled return flight was put back over 17 hours to allow the new staff to be given the minimum required rest period.
Fiona Lamb, defending, told the court Rae has never been in trouble before and added: “He is absolutely adamant he has not drank since this incident.”
Miss Lamb said on the day of the flight Rae was “quite nervous about flying” and had eaten just chicken nachos before take-off.
Miss Lamb said Rae’s memory of what happened on the flight is “extremely limited” and he is not homophobic.
The court heard Rae has said in his own words: “It was horrible and shameful and I’m absolutely embarrassed, I have no idea where it came from.
“I’ve ruined my life over something I can’t even remember, it’s horrible.”

6 days agoLatest NewsComments Off on I was a 90s boyband star who sold 10m records but hotel lock-ins led to drugs spiral… I know how Liam Payne struggled
THE charts were dominated by boybands back in the Nineties and Noughties – and 911 was one of the biggest.
From 1995 to 1999, the trio – made up of Lee Brennan, Jimmy Constable and Spike Dawbarn – scored ten successive UK top 10 singles, with their biggest hit being Bodyshakin.
Jimmy Constable from 911 talks about the dark side of boyband fame[/caption]
911 were one of the biggest boybands of the 90s[/caption]
Watching One Direction star Liam Payne’s funeral yesterday was a stark reminder for Jimmy, now 52, of the pressures of being in a boyband – and of the dark spiral he went into following 911’s split in 2000.
Jimmy, who hails from Liverpool, formed 911 in Glasgow with Lee and Spike in 1995.
They sold 10 million singles and six million albums around the world throughout their time together, and had high-level security while they were touring at the height of their fame.
But three years earlier, he’d revealed the worst part about being in a boyband was getting “locked up” in hotel rooms after performing – leading to his “pills and booze” addiction.
“The problem was, the best way to secure us was to lock us in our rooms, and what is in the room? A mini-bar” he said. “So I had a party-for-one that seemed to carry on for years. It was wild but the only way you could get frustration out.”
And Jimmy says that was the same for 911, estimating they had a total of three weeks off in six years and spent the entire time living in hotels.
In an exclusive interview with The Sun, he says: “Those four or five years, it was full-on pressure.
“The job sheet comes through your door every day and there is no time to do anything else apart from what you’re concentrating on.
“Your record company obviously wants you to be full-on, 100%, no time off. ‘This is what you do. This is your schedule,’ then it’s literally, ‘Right, back into your hotel room and you can’t come out because it’s too crazy downstairs’.”
The boyband had high-level security when they travelled[/caption]
Military-level security
He continues: “If you ever wanted to go out, go meet some friends or whatever, we always had this thing where there was a car park underneath the hotel.
“So our tour manager would get us in the van, and then we’d be out. It’s not like you could just walk outside and get a cab, because you’d probably spend about at least an hour doing photographs and autographs, which is great.
Like One Direction, they were adored by fans[/caption]
“But, when you’re trying to get a bit of peace, or time on your own, that was the way you used to do it.”
While 911 were used to adoring fans in the UK, Jimmy says southeast Asia was even more intense for the band.
“Going out was completely off limits,” he says. “It was to the point where they gave us the top floor of the hotels and security on every level.
“It was crazy, absolute madness, to the point where the army was being drafted in!”
Due to the constant pressures from their record company, Jimmy descended into alcoholism, infamously appearing drunk on SM:TV Live – the Saturday morning kids’ show hosted by Ant and Dec and Cat Deeley.
Jimmy admits booze and drugs were handed to the boys whenever they needed it.
“Oh God, as you can imagine, you can get it whenever you want,” he tells us. “Because there is that kind of yes culture.
“So at the end of the day, especially if people are on the payroll, they’re there to keep you happy and give you whatever you need, because they want you on top form whenever they need you to perform.
“You could get whatever you wanted, whenever you wanted.”
10-12 bottles of wine a day
Jimmy is now trained as a paramedic[/caption]
He also tours with 911 again[/caption]
In 2000, Lee and Spike quit the band, forcing Jimmy to announce 911’s split live on The Chris Moyles Breakfast Show on Radio 1.
“I didn’t have any time to get my head around it,” he told the Guardian in 2005. “I had a lump in my throat saying it, then we came out of Radio 1 and the other two guys went to the pub.
“I got in my car and took off and I never saw them for two years.”
Suddenly Jimmy had no purpose in life – and was getting through 10 to 12 bottles of wine every day with his then-girlfriend.
I got to the point where I was ready to end it, because I just didn’t think that there was anything left for me to do.
Jimmy Constable
He says: “I was waking up the next morning thinking, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do today because the job sheet’s not there anymore,’ and my ‘friends’ weren’t there anymore, because they weren’t getting paid anymore.
“I didn’t know what to do with myself. I felt very lost.
“I felt it was easy just to drink all day, and then when the drink didn’t numb it anymore, I turned to the drugs.”
By 2002, Jimmy was at his lowest point, sitting on his bed with a bottle of Jack Daniel’s in one hand and some painkillers in the other.
He says: “I got to the point where I was ready to end it, because I just didn’t think that there was anything left for me to do.
“I didn’t have the music business and I didn’t do the job that I’ve always done, then I kind of felt like I didn’t have anything.”
‘More needs to be done’
Jimmy thinks more needs to be done following Liam’s death[/caption]
One Direction when they were first famous[/caption]
Eventually, Jimmy sought help and started going to therapy.
He says: “The biggest thing for me was accepting the problem was me, and how I was dealing with the split.
“I always felt bitter towards the world, as if the world owed me something. And that’s not the way it is.
“There are people out there that have problems, but until they accept they have a problem themselves, it will never get any better.”
And during the pandemic, Jimmy swapped swooning fans for flashing blue lights as he joined the ambulance service.
He also now tours with Lee and Spike, having got back together with them for the Big Reunion in 2013.
Sadly this wasn’t the same for Liam, who had several stints in rehab before he died.
Last month, prosecutors said they believe was “in a state of semi or total unconsciousness” when he fell to his death.
Three people were arrested and charged with “abandonment of a person followed by death, supply and facilitation of narcotics,” confirmed a statement by the office of prosecutor Andres Esteban Madrea.
And Jimmy believes more needs to be done at record companies to stop similar tragedies happening again.
He says: “Record companies should provide a psychologist to all their signings, or somebody that the artists can go to and say, ‘Well, I’ve had this experience in the music business. I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve been given everything on a plate. Now they’ve taken it away from me. What do I do?’
“And then they should still be there for years to come, to help them through the process of getting back to normality.”
911 are on the Kubix Arena Tour this December with fellow boybands Five and East 17 Tickets . For more info: www.kubixfestival.com
6 days agoLatest NewsComments Off on I’m A Celeb fans work out which camp mate will get axed from the jungle first, saying ‘he’s doomed!’
I’M A Celebrity viewers have expressed their concerns who will get booted out of the jungle first.
Fans have calculated who they think will be the unlucky celebrity to walk over the bridge in the dreaded looming eviction.
Melvin and Oti faced a brutal trial while on the show[/caption]
Eagle-eyed I’m A Celeb lovers have predicted that radio DJ Melvin Odoom, 44, will be saying goodbye to the camp and hello to Ant and Dec sooner rather than later.
Fans took to the Digital Spy social media forum to express their worries.
One user wrote: “Sorry but I fear Melvin is doomed and will probably be the first to leave the show.”
A second added: “I was looking forward to seeing him in camp as most of time he comes across as funny whenever I see him.
“But he has been way off it and has become rather boring. It could be the edit why he is like this.”
A third admitted: “I had never heard of him. He will possibly be a strong contender for first boot.”
“I guess you could say he’s Odoomed,” quipped another.
The Radio One DJ has shocked viewers by admitting he has a huge crush on his “dream woman” Carol Vorderman – and even asked her out live on TV.
Jungle buddy Tulisa Contostavlos encouraged him to “grab the bull by the horns” – and act out how he’d ask her.
Melvin said: “You look sensational today, you’re actually glowing. Listen, I’ve booked a restaurant for next week.
“It’s going to be Thai food, all expenses paid and I’m going to send a cab to your house for about 8 o’clock. See you there.”
The former Countdown host then sent a voice note in to spin-off show Unpacked.
Carol said: “Melvin, or should I say Jungle Man.. Melvin Vorderman… It sounds the same to me.
“Right, question. Have you been spying on me because just last night I had a little Thai food.
“I had pad Thai, quite a lot of it, with a little chicken satay on the side.
“It was delicious, Jungle Man.
“Anyway keep doing what you’re doing. You’re doing a brilliant job. See you on the other side.”
The Unpacked hosts admitted they didn’t know how to react to the presenter’s flirting.
Sam Thompson said: “I don’t know what to think of that.”
Kemi Rodgers shouted: “What is going on?”
The star was previously voted off Strictly Come Dancing in 2016 in week one.
Melvin said about hoping to last longer in the jungle: “If I make it past day one, that is a win. To me, that’s like winning the World Cup.”
Melvin hasn’t been as entertaining as viewers had hoped[/caption]
