Common childhood behaviour could be linked to ADHD – and 6 other signs to watch for

NEW studies have been looking into how attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) progresses over time.

The prevalence of ADHD, a chronic mental disorder that affects a person’s behaviour and development, has increased in recent decades.

Now, new research has found preschool children who struggle to control their emotions and behaviour have more symptoms of ADHD by the time their aged seven.

Children aged between three and seven who are slower at acquiring skills to manage their intense emotions were also found to be at risk of displaying more issues related to ADHD.

They were also more likely to show internalising behaviours, such as sadness and worries, at age seven, according to the researchers.

The study, led by the University of Edinburgh, is among the first to look at the links between early patterns of emotion regulation and school-age mental health.

The findings could help tailor targeted support for children who may benefit from enhanced preventative care before mental health issues emerge.

How the study was carried out

Researchers at the Universities of Edinburgh, Northumbria and Oxford analysed a large dataset to test whether the progression of emotional development among children aged three to seven is related to the risk of common mental health issues.

They examined data from the UK Millennium Cohort Study which follows the lives of around 19,000 young people born in 2000-2002.

The researchers analysed questionnaires and interviews which surveyed parents on their children’s conduct, social behaviours, and emotional regulation skills.

They used statistical techniques to measure the link between emotional problems, conduct problems and ADHD symptoms at age seven.

Their findings showed that a tendency to have extreme emotional responses and slower development in the ability to regulate those emotions was significantly associated with ADHD symptoms, internalising symptoms, and conduct problems in both male and female children at age seven.

This was the case even when other factors such as data on any pre-existing neurodevelopmental and mental health issues were taken into account.

Dr Aja Murray, of the University of Edinburgh’s School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences, who led the study, said: “Emotion regulation skills are acquired from early in life and are thought to strengthen gradually over childhood.

“Children, however, acquire these skills at different rates and slower acquisition may serve as a marker for neurodevelopmental and mental health issues.

“Our findings suggest that monitoring trajectories of emotion regulation over development could help identity which children are at risk of mental health issues.”

Other signs of ADHD in children

ADHD is more often diagnosed in boys than girls.

Symptoms in children can split into two catageories – inattentiveness (difficulty concentrating and focusing) and hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

According to the NHS, girls are more likely to have symptoms of inattentiveness only, and are less likely to show disruptive behaviour that makes ADHD symptoms more obvious.

This means girls who have ADHD may not always be diagnosed.

Symptoms in children are usually noticeable before the age of six.

Three of the main signs of inattentiveness include:

  • having a short attention span and being easily distracted
  • appearing to be unable to listen to or carry out instructions
  • constantly changing activity or task

Three of the main signs of hyperactivity and impulsiveness include:

  • being unable to sit still, especially in calm or quiet surroundings
  • interrupting conversations
  • little or no sense of danger

There are many other symptoms linked to ADHD in children and adults (see the full list below).

Your GP or your child’s teacher will be able to help if you think you or your child has ADHD.

Your GP will not be able to formally diagnose you with ADHD, but they can refer you for specialist assessment.

Your child’s school can also arrange a specialist referral for your child.

Treatment for ADHD

There is no cure for ADHD, but treatments can help reduce symptoms and improve functioning.

Treatments for ADHD often include a combination of medication, therapy, and other interventions.

Stimulants like methylphenidate or amphetamine are commonly prescribed, but other medications may be used.

Non-stimulants like atomoxetine and antidepressants may be used if stimulants cause side effects or aren’t an option for health reasons.

Psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) can help with social and emotional challenges.

Full list of ADHD symptoms to look out for

Symptoms of ADHD can be categorised into two types of behavioural problems – inattentiveness (difficulty concentrating and focusing) and hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

Many people with ADHD have problems that fall into both of these categories, but this isn’t always the case.

Symptoms in children and teenagers

The main signs of inattentiveness are:

  • having a short attention span and being easily distracted
  • making careless mistakes – for example, in schoolwork
  • appearing forgetful or losing things
  • being unable to stick to tasks that are tedious or time-consuming
  • appearing to be unable to listen to or carry out instructions
  • constantly changing activity or task
  • having difficulty organising tasks

The main signs of hyperactivity and impulsiveness are:

  • being unable to sit still, especially in calm or quiet surroundings
  • constantly fidgeting
  • being unable to concentrate on tasks
  • excessive physical movement
  • excessive talking
  • being unable to wait their turn
  • acting without thinking
  • interrupting conversations
  • little or no sense of danger

Symptoms in adults

In adults, the symptoms of ADHD are more difficult to define. This is largely due to a lack of research into adults with ADHD.

Symptoms also tend to be more subtle than childhood symptoms.

  • carelessness and lack of attention to detail
  • continually starting new tasks before finishing old ones
  • poor organisational skills
  • inability to focus or prioritise
  • continually losing or misplacing things
  • forgetfulness
  • restlessness and edginess
  • difficulty keeping quiet, and speaking out of turn
  • blurting out responses and often interrupting others
  • mood swings, irritability and a quick temper
  • inability to deal with stress
  • extreme impatience
  • taking risks in activities, often with little or no regard for personal safety or the safety of others – for example, driving dangerously

Speak to your GP if you or your child are displaying symptoms of ADHD.

The everyday family kitchen essential that could encourage burglars without you knowing

A FORMER burglar has warned people not to have a calendar in their kitchens, as it can encourage robbers.

The organisation staple is commonplace in many homes, as they’re handy to keep an eye on things going on in a family.

A former burglar turned security expert has revealed why you should never leave your calendar in your kitchen

He also advised putting a double lock onto the front door to deter robbers too[/caption]

However, according to ex-robber turned security expert Michael Fraser, having a calendar up can actually be a security risk.

“A lot of people put calendars up in their kitchen,” he said during an interview on This Morning.

“And the calendar’s up with the dates on of when they’re out.

“And what they don’t realise is the burglar can read.

“He will come round the back, have a look through.

“If he sees that you’re not there, he’ll come back.”

And if you can’t go without a calendar, just make sure it’s not anywhere near a window.

“It’s also a dead giveaway that you’re not security conscious,” he added.

“So yeah, we all have calendars.

“Don’t leave them by windows where they can be seen.”

Likewise, if you are going away, don’t be tempted to share pictures on your social media pages.

“Everyone does it,” he sighed.

“You are giving burglars a perfect window of opportunity to do serious damage, and take their time doing it because they know there will be no-one in!”

Michael’s other advice included having two locks on the front door, as it can deter a burglar because it makes them aware it would be harder to get in.

“To make their own lives easier they will just go somewhere else that only has one lock,” he said.

He also advised getting a cage around your letterbox, to avoid any “letterbox fishing”, where people can grab important documents.

How to protect your home from burglars

  • Install a home security system:
    • Consider alarms, CCTV cameras, and smart doorbells.
    • Choose systems that allow remote monitoring via smartphone.
  • Secure doors and windows:
    • Ensure all doors and windows have robust locks.
    • Use deadbolts and window locks for added security.
    • Consider installing a peephole or door chain.
  • Improve outdoor lighting:
    • Install motion-sensor lights around your property.
    • Ensure pathways, driveways, and entrances are well-lit.
  • Maintain your garden:
    • Keep hedges and shrubs trimmed to eliminate hiding spots.
    • Store tools and ladders securely to prevent their use in break-ins.
  • Use timers for lights:
    • Set timers to turn lights on and off to give the impression someone is home.
    • Consider using smart plugs to control appliances remotely.
  • Secure garages and sheds:
    • Ensure these areas are locked with strong padlocks.
    • Store valuable items out of sight.
  • Get to know your neighbours:
    • Join or form a neighbourhood watch scheme.
    • Encourage neighbours to keep an eye on each other’s properties.
  • Be cautious with social media:
    • Avoid posting holiday plans or location updates online.
    • Ensure privacy settings are secure to limit who can see your posts.
  • Mark valuables with a UV pen:
    • Use a UV pen to mark valuables with your postcode and house number.
    • Register items with a property database for easier recovery if stolen.
  • Consider installing a safe:
    • Use a safe to store important documents and valuable items.
    • Ensure the safe is securely bolted to the floor or wall.
  • Review your home insurance:
    • Check that your home insurance policy is up to date.
    • Ensure it covers the value of your possessions.
  • Conduct regular security checks:
    • Periodically review and update your home security measures.
    • Ensure all systems and locks are in good working order.

They can also potentially open the door from the inside if there’s no cage around it.

Another letterbox tip might seem common sense, but Michael admitted it happens more than you might think.

“People leave keys on the inside of letterboxes attached to string,” he revealed.

“This is a very basic error that again can have huge consequences.”

People were quick to comment on the interview when it was shared on TikTok, with one writing: “That’s clever!”

“Thanks for the advice,” another praised.

Jealous trolls accuse me of ‘promoting obesity’ and tell me to ‘go and die’, but I don’t care – I’m fat and proud

LAURA Adlington has been called ‘every name under the sun’ and has even been accused of ‘promoting’ obesity by keyboard warriors.

But, according to this size 26 woman, who first found fame as a contestant on The Great British Bake Off back in 2020, she believes that trolls are just ‘jealous’ and need to get ‘therapy’.

Laura has shared all on the positives and negatives of having a public social media presence[/caption]

Laura, 34, has since made a name for herself as a plus-size fashion influencer since her TV stint, where she captured the nation’s heart with her baking skills and infectious personality.

But since then, the Kent-based star has turned her attention to something even more important: redefining beauty and body positivity.

As a proud curvy content creator, Laura uses her platform to help women embrace their bodies, no matter their size or shape.

Despite this, being in the public eye hasn’t come without its challenges. Laura has faced her fair share of trolls, with some even telling her to ‘go and die’.

But she is having none of it, as Laura tells Fabulous: “I’m fat and happy.

“I get messages calling me a ‘fat b***h’ and a ‘fat c**t’ and telling me I should diet and ‘go and die’. Those ones don’t bother me.

“[Trolling] happens and I think it’s a reflection of insecurities and jealousy, but I try not to let it bother me and affect me.

“The ones that bother me more now are the ones that say I’m ‘promoting obesity’.

“That really angers me and frustrates me because it’s not true. I’m not standing in the high street signposting people to McDonald’s and telling people what to eat.

“There’s so many influencers that promote FAD diets, I don’t talk about what I eat. I don’t share anything about that.”

From Bake Off to Body Positivity

Before Bake Off, Laura was on the brink of a life-changing decision, just three days away from getting bariatric surgery.

a woman in a black dress stands in front of a red couch
instagram/laura.adlington
Laura was just three days away from having bariatric surgery when she had a mindset reset[/caption]

She says: “Around March 2020, I was three days away from having bariatric surgery.

“I realised that as much as the opportunity would fix my stomach, it wasn’t going to fix my head, and that my issues with food and eating were a lot more deep rooted.

“It made me question why I felt the need to constantly be on a diet and change myself and feel that my life would be better if I ‘just lost weight’, if I was ‘just smaller’, if I was ‘just one dress size down’.

“I realised that tomorrow isn’t promised. It might sound a bit cheesy but I realised how many years I wasted hating myself and it literally got me nowhere.”

This pivotal moment sparked a shift in Laura’s thinking, and she soon began sharing her experiences online.

Now, she lives a ‘full and happy life’ and isn’t wasting time missing out on life’s experiences.

I realised that you can be fat and happy. We deserve that, whatever our size or shape

Laura Adlington

But Laura admits: “It wasn’t an overnight thing, it was quite gradual.

“I think I definitely got validation from other plus-size women online who were in the same boat.”

Through her honesty about diet culture, body neutrality, and self-love, Laura’s social media accounts took off, resonating with thousands who were ready to embrace themselves fully, flaws and all.

Now, with 428,000 followers, she shares: “I wanted to share my experience growing up fat, because I felt very alone and isolated, I had a different experience growing up to a lot of other people.

“I realised that actually, it’s really important that we share our experiences because they can resonate and help people and inspire people to be more confident in themselves.

“I decided to share more about my knowledge of diet culture and body positivity and body neutrality and [my social media accounts] kind of just took off really.”

Taking Back the Word ‘Fat’

For many, the word ‘fat’ carries negative connotations, but Laura isn’t afraid to own it.

Now she wants to reclaim the word ‘fat’[/caption]

Laura shares: “I realised that you can be fat and happy. We deserve that, whatever our size or shape.

“I think for a lot of us, for such a small word, it can hold so much power, the word fat.

“For me personally, growing up, it was always used as an insult.

“Even now, it doesn’t happy often, but if I ever have a run in with a stranger, the immediate thing is ‘you fat b***h’, ‘you fat cow’. And even online, I’m called it as an insult.

The 5 Best Body Positive Influencers To Follow

  1. @_nelly_london – Nelly has been on a journey with breast corrective surgery and has also shared her experience with eating disorders, her honesty and openness makes her a great follow.
  2. @lottiedryna – She regularly shares content on living with IBS and finds bloat-friendly outfits to share with her followers.
  3. @stephanieyeboah –  Stephanie Yeboah’s body positive content has the most incredible message – everyone is worthy of being loved, plus she has the best fashion inspo going.
  4. @isabelladavis6 – Bella’s content spans more than just body image and is ideal for women wanting a community of women supporting women.
  5. @jessontheplussize – She advocates for women wearing what they want no matter their body shape.

“For me personally, it’s important that we try and neutralise that word and use it as a descriptor, just like someone can be brunette or short or thin.”

Laura believes that reclaiming the word is part of a larger mission to create a society that doesn’t judge people by their size, as she adds: “It’s kind of a bit like taking back the power with it.

“Factually, I am fat. We can sometimes be a little bit oversensitive in today’s society and I am fat, that’s what I am, so I think why not use it?”

The Dark Side of Social Media

Laura has had her fair share of trolling, especially since her time on Bake Off.

a woman standing in front of a building with a green door
instagram/laura.adlington
She reveals messages that are “horrific”[/caption]

She shares that the trolling began whilst she was on the show, as she continues: “During Bake Off was my first experience of trolling and it was a really difficult time, I was extremely low.

“I think that’s one of the reasons I don’t really bake now, because when thousands of people tell you you’re rubbish at something, you’re gonna take that on board.

“It really did knock all my confidence and I took it all very personally.”

I’ve been called every name under the sun that you can possibly imagine. Comments are horrific, beyond nasty

Laura Adlington

But the trolling soon reached another level when she began influencing, as she admits: “I find TikTok to be very toxic and I post and then walk away. I got trolled really, really badly on one video and it did upset me, so now I just post and don’t really engage with people. I have to do that to protect myself.

“I’ve been called every name under the sun that you can possibly imagine. Comments are horrific, beyond nasty.

“It is really hard but I feel sorry for them, no-one that is happy or secure in themselves would write that stuff. Who can be bothered to take the time to do that?

“You’re in need of some counselling or therapy. It’s not healthy. I think some of it is jealousy.”

But Laura doesn’t let the trolls win. In fact, she’s made it clear that although she’s received some particularly vicious comments, she has developed a thick skin.

She reveals: “Most people are really nice, it’s just the odd d******d. Sometimes it will ruin your day and it will get to you, but you’ve just got to brush it off.

“I think social media gets such a bad reputation, there are absolute d******ds online and most of them are men.

“You build up resilience. Sometimes it hurts, I might see the odd comment and it stings a bit, but I’ve built a wall up. I’m not saying it’s always water off a duck’s back, but you do develop a thick skin.

“I will often get messages, often daily, of people sharing their stories. People say that I’ve helped them wear something new and feel better about themselves. That feels amazing.”

The Power of Representation

Despite the negativity, Laura has found a supportive and loyal community online, many of whom share how she’s inspired them to love themselves.

a woman in a bathing suit sits in a pool holding a drink

But she wants to resonate with others online[/caption]

And the feedback she receives from her followers is what keeps her going.

Laura explains: “Representation is really important and when you can see yourself reflected online, it’s really powerful.

“I grew up and never saw myself on TV, in magazines, in film, unless they were being made fun of.

“So to see someone with my body type resonates with people and empowers them to wear trendy clothes and be confident.

“A lot of people say ‘I wish I had you when I was growing up and then I wouldn’t have felt like such a freak’.”

A Message to Haters

To the trolls who continue to spew hate, Laura, author of ‘Diet Starts Monday’, has one clear message: “Go to therapy.”

instagram/laura.adlington
Laura urged trolls to seek therapy[/caption]

She advises trolls: “Think about the fact that there’s an actual person with a human beating heart behind that screen of yours.

“I think people just do it for the laugh, comment and don’t think about it.”

I do deserve love and respect, whatever my shape and however I look and I’m not going to let it define me

Laura Adlington

And Laura’s advice to others dealing with negativity is equally empowering: “Anybody, whatever their shape or size, deserves love and respect and dignity and I think that’s a fundamental, human right.

“I’m just existing and all I’m saying to people is, it’s fine if you want to lose weight, but don’t make it your life’s purpose.”

Living a Full and Happy Life

Today, Laura is living life on her own terms and for her, it’s all about living without apology, and not letting anyone or anything hold her back.

a woman holding a glass of champagne and cotton candy

She claimed that she might not love her body every day, but that’s fine[/caption]

She concludes: “I think we get sold this lie that we have to be body positive and that body positivity means that you have to feel good and love your body every day, love every roll, love every bit of cellulite.

“And actually I think that’s not only unrealistic but also borderline dangerous because nobody, I’m sure nobody looks in the mirror every day and thinks ‘I look fantastic, I love my bloated stomach, I love my bingo wings’. It’s just not realistic for me.

“For me, it’s more about body acceptance than body positivity. Some days I think I look great and sometimes I think I look awful, I think that’s most women.

“That’s fine, I don’t have to love how I look but I do deserve love and respect, whatever my shape and however I look and I’m not going to let it define me.”

‘Only way it’ll be fair’ – Amanda Serrano demands rule change for Katie Taylor trilogy as she repeats head-butting claim

AMANDA SERRANO will only fight Katie Taylor a third time if there is a major rule change – claiming ‘it will be the only way it will be fair’.

Serrano, 36, lost to the Irishwoman via unanimous decision last Friday night for what was her second defeat to Taylor.

Amanda Serrano has called for a rule change for the third fight[/caption]

Despite this, there has already been talk of a trilogy between the two, with both fighters and KT’s promoter Eddie Hearn talking up the possibility.

However, Serrano has called for a third fight to be across 12, three-minute rounds, saying it would be the only way for it to be fair.

The Puerto Rican has been a staunch advocate of women’s boxing using 12×3, and beat Danila Ramos in October 2023 via unanimous decision in the extended format.

Asked if the result in Texas was fair, she told CBS Mornings: “Listen, I didn’t know — there was a lot of headbutting going on and a lot of holding going on.

“I’m just happy that we were able to perform on this platform and millions of people saw what they saw.

“I believe I won the fight which means we have to go for the third fight.

“I’m 100% interested (in a third fight), she said she is.

“The only way I feel like it will be fair is if we go under the men’s rules which is three minutes and 12 rounds.

“She agreed to it so let’s see if she’ll take the fight.”

Despite all four judges scoring the fight 95-94 in Taylor’s favour, the result was booed by the AT&T Stadium.

Netflix commentator Mauro Ranallo claimed that it was a “robbery” while actress Rosie Perez said it would put an “asterisk” on the 2012 Olympic gold medallist’s legacy.

Serrano was left with a gruesome gash over her right eye following a clash of heads in the fourth round and another in the eighth which led to Taylor being deducted a point.

After the fight, the four-division world champion’s team accused Taylor of “cheating” while Serrano herself suggested the Bray Bomber had head-butted her intentionally.

She apologised for the accusation on social media the next day but, speaking to CBS Mornings, accused Taylor of excessive head-butted.

She added: “It was excessive from headbutting and excessive holding.

“We had warned the referee beforehand when we was in the locker room that that’s what she does.

“We fought her before and we knew that’s what she does. She likes to come in with her head.

“I’m not saying it was done intentionally but knowing the way Katie fights, that’s how she fights.

“So we just warned the referee beforehand and he said don’t worry, he’ll handle it, and obviously he didn’t handle it as good as he was supposed to.”

I’m A Celeb viewers clock secret ‘feud’ after noticing star’s ‘unimpressed’ reaction

I’M A Celeb viewers think they’ve clocked a ‘feud’ after noticing a star’s ‘unimpressed’ reaction.

The moment happened when Radio 1 star Dean McCullough returned to camp last night, announcing that he’d won just four stars after a gruesome trial.

While most of his camp mates congratulated him upon his return after the Lethal Lab challenge, some viewers noticed that Danny Jones wasn’t as impressed.

Fans noticed that Danny didn’t crack a smile or say anything to Dean, despite his co-stars raving about the Northern Irish star’s success.

Taking to social media to suggest a ‘feud’ between the two, one person penned: “I think Danny is p***ed off which is completely understandable.

A second added: “Oop Danny does not look pleased,” while a third echoed: “Danny didn’t look too impressed at failing at fishguts.”

I’m A Celeb viewers have issued calls for Dean, who hates confined spaces, to be replaced with someone else to do the trials, after being consistently voted in.

And fans of the hit ITV show have noticed that Danny isn’t the only one ‘raging’ about Dean’s trial success rate.

Viewers are convinced that presenter Ant, 49, was secretly furious with Dean, 32, after he called time on Wednesday’s challenge and failed to secure any stars.

Ant, known for his playful banter with co-host Dec, appeared unusually stern, hinting at his frustration as he greeted Dean for yet another trial, Lethal Lab.

He even warned Dean that he was the “bad cop” in their hosting duo.

Dean’s upbeat demeanor after the trial seemed to catch Ant off guard.

As the DJ bowled into the clearing, Ant quipped: “Hello, Dean. I didn’t expect that. I thought you’d be a little bit forlorn, a little bit sad. It looks like you’re loving life. Have you been to the pub?”

Dean laughed it off, replying: “No, no, I’ve just had a cold shower.”

Ant then shifted to a more serious tone, confronting Dean about his recent failures, saying: “Now, Dean, I want to have a word with you. What happened yesterday? No stars. What happened the day before? You said, ‘I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here.'”

Dean admitted: “Oh, it’s not good, but that’s why I’m ready for it today, because we’re going to change the narrative.”

But Ant didn’t let him off the hook, firmly responding: “You can only change the narrative by sticking with it and getting on with it.”

The exchange left Dean momentarily stunned. “I feel like I’m being told off by Ant and Dec,” he joked.

Ant was quick to clarify: “Well, by me,” while Dec chimed in to reassure, “I’m good cop.”
