‘Looking elsewhere’ – Peter Lawwell makes veiled Rangers dig as he reveals what Celtic’s massive cash reserves are for
CELTIC chairman Peter Lawwell couldn’t resist a veiled reference to events across the city at Rangers as he pointed out the wisdom of having reserves of cash in the bank.
The Hoops are holding their AGM at Celtic Park today on the back of a strong league and financial position – with a whopping £77.2m in the bank.
It’s Celtic AGM day at Parkhead[/caption] Michael Nicholson and Peter Lawwell[/caption]The Hoops balance sheet shows a healthy bank balance boosted by almost £5m to £77.2m year on year.
By contrast, historic rivals Rangers made a significant loss and things could get worse before they get better with the club being locked out of Ibrox for a period this season due to a delay in steel shipments.
Speaking at today’s AGM, Lawwell explained the advantages of having such high cash reserves.
He said: “This is an uncertain industry.
“When you’re winning the league it’s fine. But we need to provide for the longer term if things don’t go quite as well as they have gone int the past.
“We can see – looking elsewhere – what happens if you don’t participate in the Champions League for a year and you replace that with the Europa League.
“That is the difficult financial challenge we have moving forward.”
Chief finance officer Chris McKay too insists the gap between Champions League and Europa League qualification have never been bigger.
He said: “The difference between the Champions League and the Europa League has never been more stark.
“That is evident if you look at a set of accounts with a Europa League participating team and a set of accounts with a Champions League participating team.
“Eight games is good for us and that jeopardy further into the league phase also introduces an additional dynamic as well.
“It [cash in the bank] gives us the flexibility throughout transfer windows to invest when we need to invest.
“And secondly it allows us to run the business normally if we are in the Europa League for a period of time.
“The cash won’t last forever but what it gives us is runway. You can run your business under normal operating conditions without having to sell marquee players and allows you to invest into the squad at the same time.”

The challenges will come on top of the personalised deals that customers already get via app or email.
Once customers have completed the challenge, they will be rewarded with extra Clubcard points within 72 hours.

However, shoppers can bump the value up to £100 if they decide to spend the vouchers with one of Tesco’s 100 reward partners, which include the RAC, Disney+, the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club and Pizza Express.
Because the challenges are personalised, they vary between shoppers.
The amount you will have to spend to meet the challenge will also vary by customer.
For example, one shoppers has been asked to spend £4 on advent calendars and £7 on F&F Clothing.
Shoppers also need to be aware that they only have a six day window within to complete each challenge before it expires.
If customers complete all six challenges, they will then receive a reward or a money off coupon in the app, which will be valid until Sunday, January 5.
The value of this voucher will vary depending on the challenges that customers had to complete.
It is the third time that Tesco has brought back its Clubcard Challenges, after launching it in late Spring and bringing it back in summer.
The offer is perfect for customers who were already intending to spend in certain categories – otherwise the extra spending can easily outweigh the benefits of extra Clubcard points.
Consumer groups have previously warned that these types of challenges can push families to going over household budgets.
Shoppers eligible to take part in the campaign will be be emailed and also see a banner on their Tesco Clubcard app.
If you’re not contacted, unfortunately you can only play if you are selected.
But it’s not the only way you can bump up your Clubcard points balance.

Spending challenges are just the latest new feature to the Clubcard scheme in recent years.
Supermarket loyalty schemes - which has one?
MOST UK supermarkets have loyalty schemes so customers can build up points and save money while they shop.
Here we round up what saving programmes you’ll find at the big brands.
- Iceland: Unlike other stores, you don’t collect points with the Iceland Bonus Card. Instead, you load it up with money and Iceland will give you £1 for every £20 you save.
- Lidl Plus: Lidl customers don’t collect points when they shop, and are instead rewarded with personalised vouchers that gives them money off at the till.
- Morrisons: The My Morrisons: Make Good Things Happen replaces the More Card and rewards customers with personalised money off vouchers via the app.
- Sainsbury’s: While Sainsbury’s doesn’t have a personal scheme, it does own the Nectar card which can also be used in Argos, eBay and other shops. You need 200 Nectar points to save up £1 to spend on your card. You need to spend at least £1 to get one Nectar point.
- Tesco: Tesco Clubcard has over 17million members in the UK alone. You use it each time you shop and build up points that can be turned into vouchers – 150 points gets you a £1.50 voucher. Here you need to spend £1 in Tesco to get one point.
- Waitrose: myWaitrose also doesn’t allow you to collect points but instead you’ll get access to free hot drinks, and discounts off certain brands in store.
Europe’s best-value city reveals major airport renovation with new terminals and train station
A MAJOR airport renovation will make flying to one of Europe’s cheapest cities much easier.
Vilnius in Lithuania was named the best value city in Europe by the Post Office earlier this year.
Vilnius International Airport has revealed plans for huge new terminals[/caption] The arrivals terminal will open by 2028[/caption]And the city’s main airport is to undergo a huge expansion.
Vilnius International Airport is expected to welcome up to ten million passengers by 2030.
This increases to 17 million passengers expected a year by 2052.
The new expansion plans will increase capacity with a new arrivals and departure terminal.
The departure terminal was set to open this summer, although has been delayed to February 2025.
Set across 14,400sqm, passenger traffic will double from 1,200 to 2,400 an hour.
Inside will be 34 check in counters and new CT scanners, which will speed up security checks.
Self-service baggage claim areas and seating areas will be part of the new terminal.
Costing around €50million (£41.6million), the terminal construction has now finished with final testing to take place ahead of its opening next year.
And a new arrivals terminal hopes to open by 2028.
Arnas Dūmanas, Head of the Development Department of Lithuanian Airports, confirmed they had launched an architectural competition for the new designs.
They said: “We are already in a period of major change, but in parallel we want to make every future infrastructure change at the capital’s air gateway.
“It is for these reasons that we believe that an international architectural competition of ideas for a new arrival terminal and its environment is the best way to understand what is available to choose from and what to have in the future.”
Experts have until next year to submit their designs.
The airport could welcome up to 17million passengers[/caption] The departure lounge will open in February 2025[/caption]Also new at the airport will be the Rail Baltica underground train station.
Rail Baltica is a huge new high speed train line, running 540 miles through three countries.
Linking Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, it would be the first of its kind connecting the Baltic states.
Set to cost as much as €24.8billion (£20.4billion), it will also eventually extend to both Poland and Finland.
