Inside UK’s loneliest station where 54 passengers a year have to hail train like a bus… and wait a WEEK if they miss it

A PASSENGER walks to the end of the platform and puts his hand out to flag down the ‘Denton Flyer’ as it comes into Britain’s least used railway station.

Just one train service runs a week run through the eerily quiet station in Denton, Greater Manchester, on Saturday morning.

Rail enthusiasts call it a ‘ghost station’ and it has gained cult status as the train has to be flagged down before it will stop.

Over the last year, just 54 passengers were recorded using the station, which is hidden by a slip road onto the M67 motorway.

It is a sharp spike in popularity from the year before, when it welcomed just 34 travellers, according to statistics released this week by the Office of Rail and Road.

When we visit the station on a recent Saturday, the 8.42am train is about to get unusually busy – with two passengers.

The train guard jokes that this morning is “rush hour” as Derek Lack, 73, waves down the train to make sure it stops.

The pensioner has walked two miles from his home in Denton to reach the station.

He said: “I’m of the view that if you don’t use it you lose it so that’s why I’ve come.

“Mind you, it’s not that reliable.

“I came the other week and it just didn’t turn up.

“I do wish they’d run more trains as it would be very handy.”

Leaning out of one of two carriages as the train pulls into Denton, guard Darren Scholes, 51, said: “This is a busy day – there’s not often this many here.

“We do get the odd rail enthusiasts mind. I love working this route as it’s so unusual.”

Man on a mission

The second passenger has put in a considerable effort to catch the train, nicknamed the Denton Flyer, as it slowly meanders from a station in the foothills of the Pennines to Stockport.

Charity manager Mark Morton, 51, left his home in Bradford, West Yorks, at 6.30am to make sure he was on time.

Mark is a rail enthusiast who is on a mission to visit everyone of Britain’s 2,600 rail stations.

Denton is about number 500 for him.

Top 5 least used stations in Great Britain

1. Denton, Greater Manchester – 54 passengers a year
2. Shippea Hill, Cambridgeshire – 70 passengers a year
3. Ince and Elton, Cheshire – 86 passengers a year
4. Polesworth, Warwickshire – 118 passengers a year
5. Reddish South, Greater Manchester – 128 passengers a year

He said: “This is probably the most unusual station I’ve visited.

“It feels pretty eerie as it’s so deserted and feels really lonely even though we’re near Manchester.

“I’ve been to a few station in Devon and they really are in the middle of nowhere.

“But this is just really unique and I really wanted to tick Denton off as it’s so quiet and is a real catch.”

He added: “I travel a lot through my work and so I try and visit a train wherever I can.

“I’m going to get off at the next station and then catch the train back so I’ll have two new ones this morning.”

UK’s quietest station

The Office of Rail and Road said there were only 54 recorded journeys between April 2023 and March 2024, at Denton, making it the quietest station in the country.

The two-platform station is maintained by Northern Rail and has no staff and no ticket office.

Only one train stops at the station every week[/caption]

Its hidden away location, next to a Sainsbury’s, and by a motorway makes access difficult and is two miles from Denton itself.

Some locals of the town, which has a population of more than 150,000, do not even know it’s there.

Student Tom Wright, 18, said: “I didn’t know there was a station. I’ve never seem it and don’t know anyone who’s used it.

“I catch the bus.”

Why station won’t close

The lonely station hosts the single train to Stockport at 8.42am on Saturday. The train then turns around and comes back towards the hills in Stalybridge.

The weekly train is what is known as a parliamentary service. It would be more expensive to close down the station so it is cheaper to just run one train service a week, which stops it having to be closed down.

Campaigners want to revitalise the station and would like a regular service to run into Manchester Victoria, which is next door to Manchester Arena.

However, a sign by the entrance to the station warns that Friends of Denton Station have had to suspend their group activities “due to circumstances beyond their control”.

Campaigners have now migrated to the Friends of Reddish South Station, who want to revitalise both stations.

This is probably the most unusual station I’ve visited. It feels pretty eerie as it’s so deserted and feels really lonely

Train enthusiast Mark Morton

David Ashworth’s brother Peter used to work as a porter at Denton station when it had two four lines and two platforms.

The retired airport security officer, 75, said: “He loved working here and was here for years.

“Sadly he also got badly injured. We think he got hit by a train as he walked down towards a signal box.

“He was found lying by the tracks. He recovered but that was him done working on the railways as he was too badly hurt.”

He added: “It’s sad to see the place like this as it could be so much more.

“But it’s all about money.”

Train fan Mark Morton made his way from Bradford to ride the train[/caption]

Manchester United fan Alan Burrows, 64, said: “I go to Old Trafford to watch games but I can’t get the train, which is sad.

“I have to drive and get the tram. I just can’t get a train from here as there aren’t any.

“It’s a crying shame. If I could get a train into Manchester Victoria from here then it would be easier to get to the football.

“It’s would be the same for people going to watch Man City or Stockport County.”

Top 5 most used stations in Great Britain

1. London Liverpool Street – 94.5m passengers a year
2. London Paddington 66.9m passengers a year
3. Tottenham Court Road 64.2m passengers a year
4. London Waterloo 62.5m passengers a year
5. Stratford (London) 56.6m passengers a year

Their fellow campaigner Noel Henry, 63, said: “We believe we have the population here to merit more trains.

“University students have told us they’d use it and it would make sense to run into Manchester Victoria.

“We also have the backing of local MPs.”

The morning 8.42am service had just one passenger already on board as it slowed into Denton station.

Rail fan Mark stopped as he posed for a photograph by the train door.

Eager to get on board before the door closed, he joked: “I’d better get on – I’d have to wait a week if I miss it.”

Strictly in fix row as show legend reveals bosses ‘have a way of getting rid of stars’ – and tried it with Pete Wicks

STRICTLY has found itself in a new fix row as a show legend revealed bosses “have a way of getting rid of stars.”

The star in question revealed they’ve even tried it with Pete Wicks.

Vanessa said show bosses can use song choices and costumes to ‘get rid of stars’[/caption]

Vanessa Feltz jumped onto her YouTube channel and revealed what bosses can do as a way to ‘get rid of stars’ on Strictly, as she shared a video titled ‘Strictly: They can set the whole show up to throw you out and that’s what happened.”

TV star Vanessa took part in the eleventh series of the hit BBC competition in 2013 and was partnered with James Jordan.

In her video, she candidly said: “Bosses can use music which is loud and clanging and clashing and horrible, or a really obscure song that nobody knows and nobody likes, or a bit of really sort of weird classical music that everyone hates.

“They can absolutely kibosh you by choosing unpleasant, unpopular music that nobody likes.”

And that’s not all, as TV personality Vanessa said they can use costumes to ‘get rid of you’ too.

She continued: “They can give you a really ugly, unflattering costume. Now, would they say, ‘Here you are. Here’s an ugly costume,’ of course they wouldn’t.

“What they say is, we’re doing something comical. We’re giving you an amusing, hilarious, you know, entertaining pantomimist kind of costume.

“And then you have to come out looking like an absolute dog’s dinner.

“So if they do a combination of a film about your rehearsal week that is somehow unflattering and shows you in a rather unappetising light, a horrible track that you’ve got to dance to that nobody likes, including you and a really ludicrous and unflattering costume, then they really are setting the whole show up to throw you out.”

And Vanessa thinks it’s been happening to Towie star Pete Wicks, who is currently on the show.

“In my view, that’s what happened to Pete Wicks,” Vanessa said.

She went on: “They’re at Blackpool. They totally deserve to be there. They danced beautifully the week before, but what do they do?

“They give them the song ‘I’m Too Sexy’, for God’s sake, which is, you know, something you might like to dance to when you’re entirely drunk at the wedding, but not really any other time.

Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special WINNERS

STRICTLY Come Dancing's Christmas Special is rolling back around for 2024. Yet who has already scooped the festive Glitterball Trophy?

2005 Darren Gough & Lilia Kopylova
2006 Colin Jackson & Erin Boag
2007 Darren Gough & Lilia Kopylova
2008 Jill Halfpenny & Darren Bennett
2009 Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna
2010 John Barrowman & Kristina Rihanoff
2011 Charlie Brooks & Vincent Simone
2012 J.B. Gill & Ola Jordan
2013 Rufus Hound & Flavia Cacace
2014 Louis Smith & Aliona Vilani
2015 Harry Judd & Joanne Clifton
2016 Melvin Odoom & Janette Manrara
2017 Katie Derham & Brendan Cole
2018 Aston Merrygold & Janette Manrara
2019 Debbie McGee & Kevin Clifton
2020 —

2022 Alexandra Mardell & Kai Widdrington
2023 Jamie Borthwick & Nancy Xu

“And they put poor Pete Wicks in pink PVC, skin tight, ugly looking trousers and a totally stupid costume.”

Pete, 36, and his professional partner Jowita Przystal danced the Cha Cha in Blackpool to I’m Too Sexy, and his pink PVC trousers got viewers talking.

Vanessa added: “They make him look like some kind of extra lumbering in in a panto.

“Not only that, they choose the song I’m Too Sexy, because everybody knows that he’s a Don Juan. He’s got lots of women.

“All of them are crazy about him, So it totally takes the focus off him as a dancer and basically takes the p*** out of him as a person.

“It’s not fair, I don’t think, because if you wanted to enjoy his dance, you can’t. He looks stupid.

“The music’s silly and all the whole kind of focus is I’m too sexy.”

Vanessa ended by saying: “You’re meant to think of him as a sort of sexed up reality TV star rather than someone who’s dancing really very well indeed.

“And I thought that was an example of what James Jordan told me they do on Strictly when they’ve had enough of you.

“The best thing about it though was that their plot was foiled because the audience very wisely voted to keep Pete and Jowita in, not to get rid of them.

“So Ha ha! That was absolutely sweet revenge.”

Stop car doors getting frozen SHUT with 10p kitchen essential you already own as Storm Bert brings 15 INCHES of snow

icicles hang from the side mirror of a car
Frozen rearview mirror and wiper of the car with icicles, ice and frost

A 10p kitchen essential you already own could save your car doors from getting frozen shut, as Storm Bert brings in 15 inches of snow.

The nifty trick creates a protective barrier against ice.

Winter storm hitting urban streets of London, United Kingdom
Waking up to a frozen car after the UK’s recent snowfall can throw your whole morning off track

With Storm Bert set to reach the UK on Saturday, the Met Office is expecting it to bring “heavy rain, strong winds and disruptive snow to parts of the UK through the weekend”, potentially causing travel disruption and flooding.

To stop car doors from freezing shut, experts recommend spraying a little cooking oil or silicone spray on the door seals and wipe it with a cloth.

A 1L bottle of Vegetable Oil costs just £1.99 from Tesco – a dash of that costs pennies.

If the door is already frozen, push gently on the door frame to crack the ice before trying to pull it open.

Waking up to a frozen car after the UK’s recent snowfall can throw your whole morning off track.

Whether it’s iced-over windscreens, stubborn doors, or frozen locks, these simple tricks can help you avoid delays and get on the road quickly.

Experts at Ski Famille, who are no strangers to cold conditions during their family ski holidays, shared their clever hacks to handle frosty cars with ease.

Probably, the easiest trick – cover your windscreen overnight.

Place a towel, tarp, or even a large piece of cardboard over your windscreen the night before.

This prevents frost from forming and saves you precious time in the morning.

Don’t have a cover? Use an old shower curtain or a reusable car frost shield.

But don’t forget to lift your wipers.

Prevent your wiper blades from sticking to the glass by lifting them off the windscreen overnight.

If they’re already frozen, pour lukewarm (not hot) water over them and gently lift.

Everyday household items can also prove effective when it comes to defrosting your car.

Mix three parts vinegar with one part water and spray it on your windscreen to melt light frost.

Alternatively, rub a halved onion or potato on your windscreen the night before—these create a layer that reduces frost buildup.

Lastly, parking is important.

Try to park your car facing east. The morning sun can help melt frost naturally.

In extreme cold, consider parking near a wall or building for extra shelter from the wind.

A spokesperson from Ski Famille said: “Dealing with frozen cars is a daily reality on ski holidays, so we’ve learned a few tricks.

“Simple things like covering your windscreen and preparing door seals can make a big difference.

“The goal is to prevent the freeze before it happens—preparation is everything!”

What is Storm Bert?

The storm, named Storm Bert, will blanket parts of Scotland with up to eight inches of snow as when it strikes this weekend, with a danger to life warning in place tomorrow.

Airports are also urging passengers to double check their flights are still going ahead – and plan routes carefully, with motorists told to stick to main roads.

The storm is set to reach the UK on Saturday and the Met Office is expecting it to bring “heavy rain, strong winds and disruptive snow to parts of the UK through the weekend”, potentially causing travel disruption and flooding.

An amber alert for heavy snow and ice will be in force between 7am and 5pm on Saturday in an area north of Scotland’s central belt, where 10-20cm is likely on ground above 200 metres and potentially as much as 20-40cm on hills above 400 metres.

The warning covers parts of Angus, Perth and Kinross, Stirlingshire, Aberdeenshire and some of the Highlands and Argyll and Bute.

It comes as a motoring expert her shared hacks to fix up your car using household goods

It comes as a motoring expert her shared hacks to fix up your car using household goods – from toothpaste to potatoes.

The car fanatic has demonstrated how easy it is with one video having received over 1.6 million views and you won’t believe the items she suggests.

Going by the name of “Driver Ms May” online, she presents seemingly magic fixes for common vehicle issues and in one particular viral video she even uses a tube of toothpaste.

May claims that the product can tackle scratches.

She spreads some onto a car and then uses a towel to wipe the area back and forth a few times.

And the scratch magically disappears.

In another clip shared recently, which has over 760,000 views, May, who is from China, shows some other items that can be useful.

This includes a potato cut in half to prevent water droplets on the wing mirrors in wet weather.

She said: “When driving in the rain, it is very easy to get water droplets on the rear view mirror.

“In fact, it [the car] is most afraid of potatoes.

“We just need to wipe potatoes on the rear view mirror a few times.

“There will be no more water droplets.”

Inside Tommy Fury’s single life, from playing the role of doting dad to daughter Bambi to snubbing I’m A Celeb offer

TOMMY FURY is a man on a mission.

Not only is he planning on knocking out Darren Till, when the pair meet on January 18 in a huge Misfits boxing event, he also hopes to win back Molly-Mae Hague.

Fury is now gearing up for a fight against Darren Till at a Misfits Boxing event[/caption]

It was back in the summer when the Love Island alumni revealed they were going their separate ways.

Since then, Fury, 25, has branched out on his own.

Not only has he moved into a £15,000-per-month bachelor pad, he has set up his own media firm.

Already, Fury has fielded offers from reality TV shows, snubbing I’m A Celebrity.

Instead, he’s been focusing on training, as he eyes a rematch with KSI.

He has vowed to win Molly-Mae back revealing: “I know what I have to do in order to resolve things”.

But for the moment, he’s content to play doting dad to their daughter Bambi in the meantime.

SunSport looks at Fury’s single life since bombshell reports of infidelity rocked his marriage.

Moving on

Fury and Molly-Mae had built an idyllic life for themselves, before their split.

They lived in a stunning £3.5million home in Cheshire, until their world came crashing down.

It was reported that Molly-Mae confronted him about rumours that he had cheated on her.

He soon moved out to a £15,000-per-month six-bedroom home in Knutsford.

The detached 5,700sq ft mansion also features a huge garden coach house, which can be converted into a huge gym.

Back in September, Fury shot a video from the house before a morning run.

He said: “That has been a nice four-mile run to start the day off. I feel incredible.

“The best way of therapy for me is getting out first thing, clearing your head, going on a nice long run, fresh air. There’s nothing better.”

He also treated himself to a £3,500 Apple Vision Pro VR headset.

Meanwhile, despite all the training at the gym, preparation for his next fight, and splashing the cash on gadgets – Fury makes sure he indulges his daughter.

He and Molly co-parent their girl, Bambi and the boxing star has been seen taking her to the park and sharing ice cream.

Snubbing TV offers

Forget Barry McGuigan, it could have been Tommy Fury who was I’m A Celeb’s resident boxer.

That’s if TNT took up ITV’s offer to appear in the current series.

As The Sun exclusively revealed, Fury pulled out of the reality TV hit – just two weeks before the stars were expected to fly out to the Australian jungle.

A TV insider said: “Bosses are surprised Tommy has chosen to pull out of I’m A Celebrity at this late stage as it would have been a great opportunity for him too.”

Recent reports suggested he fancies a money-spinning rematch against KSI, instead.

While it has also been mooted that he could appear on Celebrity Big Brother.

Day time TV appearances

Last month and earlier this month, Fury appeared on two daytime TV favourites.

First, he joined Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley on the This Morning couch to discuss his new book, Lightning Can Strike Twice: My Life as a Fury.

But instead of quizzing him about the book, Shephard fired out a number of stinging questions, asking Tommy: “It has been a turbulent few months for you, Tommy.

“How are you feeling after everything you have been through in the summer?”

Tommy remained calm on the sofa opposite Ben and his This Morning co-host Cat Deeley, and said: “I’m feeling OK. I’m feeling good.”

But he admitted: “It doesn’t take a genius to figure out it has been hard for me and it has been very hard times.

“At the end of the day I have been knuckling down so training, taking me daughter to ballet, swimming, and whatever else. So I’ve been keeping myself busy.

“And of course the book, you know, I’m very excited to launch that today. It’s going to be an amazing day.”

On Loose Women, Fury wasn’t given an easy ride too.

When questioned about the split, Tommy looked unimpressed and awkwardly stressed: “I don’t listen to anything in the press and on social media because its all, that’s one story, very apart from the real story, and like I said moving forward.

‘Everyone is entitled to a private life and me and Molly we got together when we was very young.

“And we just think going forward everything should be private now because everyone is entitled to that and that’s what I want.”

‘Only have eyes for Molly’

Last month, Fury said he was determined to win Molly-Mae back.

In an interview with the Mail, he revealed that the couple still love each other.

He said: “It is proper love. Do I still love Molly. 100 per cent. I will love her until my final breath.”

And the boxer even said that he’ll find to win her back.

He said: “100 per cent. I know what I have to do in order to resolve things. And that’s down to me. Nobody else can do that other than me.”

The dual air fryer is now reduced to just €79.95.

Dunnes Stores chiefs said: “The Salter Dual Air Fryer is an extra large air fryer that enables you to conveniently cook for your whole family with ease.

“The interior is divided into two independent cooking compartments.

“The sync function allows you to cook different foods and serve at the same time.

“A healthy alternative to deep-frying, the Dual Air Fryer requires little to no oil, but retains all the flavour.”

THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”
