My unborn baby nearly died after her big sister caught a common bug at school – please keep your sick kids at home

A MUM whose unborn baby nearly died after she caught a common bug from her daughter has warned other parents about its dangers.

Zoe Ellard, 34, was rushed to hospital at just 25 weeks into her second pregnancy after her eldest daughter came home from school with the illness.

The tot had caught slapped cheek syndrome, a condition commonly seen in children that causes symptoms like headaches, a high temperature and a telltale red rash on one or both cheeks.

It’s caused by a virus called parvovirus B19 that spreads through coughs and sneezes or touching contaminated objects.

Slapped cheek syndrome spreads easily because most people don’t know they have it until they get the rash.

It’s rarer for adults to catch it, but it can turn more serious.

Zoe picked up the bug from her tot, which lead to her unborn baby developing hydrops fetalis – severe swelling caused by the slapped cheek virus.

The devastated mum was told little Elsie would be stillborn – but the baby miraculously survived after her birth at 27 weeks and is now 15 months old.

Zoe, from Peterborough, Cambs, has now shared her story to raise awareness to about how serious slapped cheek syndrome can be for pregnant mothers and their babies.

She’s called for guidelines that allow parents to send their children to school with the illness to be changed.

The hairdresser said: “We nearly lost Elise and it ripped our family apart.

“When she was born, nobody knew how to treat her.

“We were told that she was the only baby in the UK that had it to the severity that she had and to survive. We were very, very lucky.

“I just want people to realise how dangerous slapped cheek is.”

Slapped cheek can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women as it can infect their babies with another serious condition called hydrops fetalis.

It causes large amounts of fluid build up in a baby’s tissues and organs, causing extensive swelling.

Around half of babies who contract hydrops do not survive.

But the NHS notes that risk of miscarriage and other complications to pregnant women from slapped cheek syndrome is very small.

Zoe contacted Peterborough City Hospital at the beginning of July 2023 to say that Maddison, then ten, had contracted slapped cheek.

She said: “I was aware that it was potentially dangerous to pregnant women and I was told that the midwife wasn’t sure if I needed to be seen and that she would check with the consultant.

“I was then told that it was so rare that a woman my age would not be immune to slapped cheek that I would not need a blood test but I could request one from my GP to make myself feel better if I wanted.

“I said ‘good luck with that as I can never get through to them’.”

‘Touch and go’

Two weeks later, Zoe rang the hospital’s NHS helpline for pregnant women to say that she felt big and heavy despite being only 25 weeks pregnant.

Zoe sent a recording of her baby’s heartbeat to a midwife at the hospital and insisted she was seen before being admitted to hospital.

Tests led doctors to conclude that her baby had hydrops and that Zoe had entered pre-term labour.

She was blue-lighted to Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, where she was told that her baby had fluid on her brain, her heart and her stomach.

We were told that had I gone to hospital a few hours later, she would have been a stillborn

Zoe Ellard

Zoe was told the devastating news that Elsie’s organs were failing and she would not survive.

The mum-of-two added: “The main goal was to get me to Luton hospital where the fetal medicine team would assess the situation.

“When we got there, we were told we were being blue-lighted to King’s College Hospital in London the next day and it was touch and go whether my baby survived the night.

“We got the London to be told that Elsie’s blood count was two when the normal range is 14 to 24.

What is slapped cheek syndrome and who is at risk?

Slapped cheek syndrome, also referred to as ‘fifth disease’, is a common viral infection in children that usually gets better on its own in three weeks.

It’s rarer in adults, but can be more serious.

Symptoms

The first sign is usually feeling unwell for a few days. Symptoms may include:

  • a high temperature
  • a runny nose and sore throat
  • a headache

A red rash may then appear on one or both cheeks – although adults don’t usually get the rash.

A few days later, a spotty rash may appear on the chest, back, arms and legs.

The rash can be raised and harder to see on brown and black skin.

It usually fades within one to three weeks, but can sometimes last longer.

How slapped cheek syndrome is spread

The virus spreads by coughs and sneezes or by touching contaminated objects.

But it can be hard to avoid spreading it because most people don’t know they have it until they get the rash.

It can only be spread before the rash appears.

How to treat slapped cheek syndrome

Slapped cheek syndrome can be treated at home with rest, plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, and by taking paracetamol and ibuprofen if you feel uncomfortable.

You should see a GP if you think you have slapped cheek syndrome and you’re pregnant, you have a blood disorder, or you have a weakened immune system.

Ask for an urgent GP appointment or call NHS 111 if you think you have slapped cheek syndrome and you have:

  • very pale skin
  • shortness of breath
  • extreme tiredness
  • fainted

“We were told that had I gone to hospital a few hours later, she would have been a stillborn.

“While in the womb, doctors carried out two blood transfusions to the umbilical chord to try and save Elise’s life from over a period of two weeks.

“We were told the treatment was working but not as well as they had hoped and I was preparing to give birth to a stillborn.”

Zoe began to suffer from mirror syndrome, a rare but potentially life-threatening pregnancy complication which meant that she also contracted a number of Elsie’s symptoms, including heart failure and liver problems.

‘On the rise’

Zoe discharged herself on July 20 to spend time at home with her elder daughter as it was likely her baby would be stillborn – but she went into labour that day.

The team managed to deliver Elsie and ventilated her upon delivery but Zoe was still told that it would be a few hours wait to see if she would survive.

The family spent 14 weeks in hospital – including six weeks at Leicester Royal Infirmary – where Elsie fought for her life.

Despite having been born at 27 weeks due to a placental abruption – when the placenta separates from the wall of the womb – Elsie is now 15 months old and has begun to crawl.

Slapped cheek is on the rise and nobody realises how dangerous it is to pregnant women and their children. It’s unbelievable that guidelines still exist that tell parents that they can send their children to school with slapped cheek

Zoe Ellard

Elsie still has parvovirus in her blood but is asymptomatic and not contagious.

Doctors are still waiting on the results of further tests if her immune system is compromised.

Zoe said: “Regulations need to changed and women need to be offered these blood tests.

“Slapped cheek is on the rise and nobody realises how dangerous it is to pregnant women and their children.

“It’s unbelievable that guidelines still exist that tell parents that they can send their children to school with slapped cheek.”

What are the school guidelines for slapped cheek syndrome?

According to the NHS, you don’t need to keep your child off school if they have slapped cheek syndrome.

This is because, once the rash appears, they’re no longer infectious.

But it’s advised parents let the school or teacher know if you think your child has slapped cheek syndrome.

Cadbury confirms it has discontinued a popular Christmas chocolate bar as shoppers demand it’s brought back

CADBURY has confirmed it has discontinued a popular Christmas chocolate bar and shoppers are demanding it’s brought back.

The chocolate maker has ditched its Dairy Milk Winter Orange Crisp Chocolate Bar this festive season.

Cadbury has confirmed Winter Orange Crisp Dairy Milk has been discontinued
Iceland

The 360g bar was made of smooth chocolate enhanced with tangy orange crisps, and it became a festive favourite for fans of the choclatier.

Shoppers previously labelled it “delicious” and “my favourite chocolate ever”.

It was released as the same time as the Dairy Milk winter mint crisp bar, which has also proved to be a hit with shoppers.

But this week, the manufacturer announced the bar has been withdrawn from shops to make way for more flavours.

It comes after one X user asked Cadbury if the bar would be returning to shelves this Christmas.

They wrote: “@CadburyUK will you be bringing back the orange festive crisp bar this year? Pleeeeeeasse.”

The company responded, writing: “Hi there, we’re always adapting our Christmas range to ensure there’s something new for everyone. This year, we’ve made a few updates we think you will love.

“We understand some will miss the Dairy Milk Orange Crisp Bar.

“Who knows, we might see them again next year. We hope this helps.”

The disappointed customer wrote back to say: “Fingers crossed it’s back next year! Me and my friends miss it!”

The Sun has approached Cadbury for comment.

Cadbury regularly refreshes its product range to introduce new favourites.

It discontinued another orange-flavoured bar earlier this year – Dairy Milk orange.

The 180g snack was launched in 2021 following a surge in popularity for chocolate orange products.

This included Cadbury’s orange Twirl in 2019, and Buttons and Fingers in 2020, as well as Tesco‘s chocolate orange bourbons.

After announcing its iconic Dairy Milk bar would be released with a fruit twist, fans were initially delighted and rushed out to buy it.

Changes to popular chocolate treats can hit fans hard.

Shoppers were in uproar in January after noticing Dairy Milk Marvellous Mix-ups with Oreo have been axed from shelves.

They were similarly left heartbroken to discover the Cadbury Dairy Milk 30 per cent Less Sugar had also been scrapped, as well as Peanut Caramel Crisp Bars.

This year Cadbury has also come under fire for reducing seven-packs of Animals biscuits to five-packs, although the price is still the same.

Why are products axed or recipes changed?

ANALYSIS by chief consumer reporter James Flanders.

Food and drinks makers have been known to tweak their recipes or axe items altogether.

They often say that this is down to the changing tastes of customers.

There are several reasons why this could be done.

For example, government regulation, like the “sugar tax,” forces firms to change their recipes.

Some manufacturers might choose to tweak ingredients to cut costs.

They may opt for a cheaper alternative, especially when costs are rising to keep prices stable.

For example, Tango Cherry disappeared from shelves in 2018.

It has recently returned after six years away but as a sugar-free version.

Fanta removed sweetener from its sugar-free alternative earlier this year.

Suntory tweaked the flavour of its flagship Lucozade Original and Orange energy drinks.

While the amount of sugar in every bottle remains unchanged, the supplier swapped out the sweetener aspartame for sucralose.

Bizarre moment Celtic fan abruptly stops AGM for two-minute long PRAYER after calling Michael Nicholson ‘the Godfather’

THE Celtic AGM is rarely a quiet and peaceful affair.

In 2023 there calls for a PERMANENT BAN on the Green Brigade and this year we saw celeb Hoops fan Sir Rod Stewart called out by a fellow supporter and Peter Lawwell taking a thinly-veiled dig at Rangers.

However, nothing was as strange as the moment a crazed fan stood up and used his allotted question time to call for a PRAYER all about Celtic – and dub Michael Nicholson as “the Godfather of Scottish football.”

The supporter began his speech by declaring this year will be the year Celtic “go for 55” – echoing the sentiments of Rangers fans when their team was pushing for a 55th league crown.

He said: “I know I’m not supposed to say this, but I’m going to anyway. I’m being a rebel.

“This season we are going for 55. And if we make it, our 55 will be the real deal.

“A certain song or piece of music can invoke a particular memory. A past holiday perhaps, or a girlfriend from 60 years ago…”

At this point he was interrupted and asked to “get to the question” but he proceeded to go off on another rather bizarre tangent, comparing many of the club’s big hitters to characters in a mafia move.

He said: “Michael, when Peter was our chief executive, he was known as the Godfather of Scottish football. You are now the Godfather of Scottish football.

“You are Al Pacino to Peter’s Marlon Brando.

“Coming soon to a widescreen near you, Celtic films in association with Shamrock Studios present in HD, 3D and VD. Godfather IV, starring Michael Nicholson. Co-starring Brendan Rogers as the hitman. John Clarke as the kit man. Peter Lawwell as the chairman. And Brian Wilson as the history man.”

As if that wasn’t odd enough, the shareholders in attendance were then treated to an impromptu prayer all about Celtic.

The fan said: “And finally, Mr Chairman, with your gracious permission, I would like to end with the 2024 version of Holy Arthur‘s Prayer. Please bear with me.

“Lord, thank you for making me a Celtic supporter. Lord, thank you for sending Borough of Alfred from Sligo to Glasgow. Lord, thank you for Jockstein and Lisbon Lions.

“Grant each and every one of them his own special place in paradise.

“Lord, thank you for sending Fergus McCann to live among us for five years. Blessed be the man. Lord, thank you for letting me on board the second boys of Brendan, even if he’s not in the economy class.

“Lord, thank you for giving the financial acumen for Celtic to have more money in the bank than all the other 41 Scottish football clubs put together.

“Lord, thank you for getting Craig Whyte off in the show trial of 2017. It’s always good to see an innocent man walk free, especially when the truly guilty go unpunished.

“Lord, thank you for making Celtic Park the biggest and best football stadium in Scotland.

“And finally, Lord, thank you for making Celtic supporters the best supporters in the world. Amen.”

Championship star forced to take £500 taxi to match after 15-hour flight back from international break he didn’t play in

WATFORD star Francisco Sierralta was forced to take a £500 taxi for his side’s next match after a 15-hour flight from Chile — where he was left on the bench for the entire international break.

Hornets ace Sierralta, 27, faced a rough trip back to England after being called up by international boss Ricardo Gareca for World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Venezuela.

Chile drew with the former 0-0 before ending the break with a 4-2 win over the latter.

But Sierralta’s 15-hour flight to South America proved fruitless as he was an unused sub in both games.

The defender then had to make another 15-hour flight back to London’s Heathrow Airport.

Yet his torturous trip was far from over.

After touching down in the capital, Sierralta next had to jump straight in a taxi and drive for five straight hours to Plymouth.

His side Watford play Argyle in a crunch Championship match tonight.

And the Hornets stumped up a crisp £500 to ferry Sierralta directly to their seaside base.

It meant the centre-back was on the move non-stop for over 20 hours.

FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS

While his entire round trip clocked in at a mammoth 15,620 miles.

It now remains to be seen whether Sierralta faces Plymouth tonight, with Watford boss Tom Cleverley keen to assess his condition.

The Hornets gaffer said: “It’s a situation I’ve never seen before in my career where you’ve got a player who is going straight to the team hotel without a training session.

“He lands at Heathrow this morning and then will get a cab straight down to Plymouth.

“We’re sending a physio down there to work with him and help get the journey out of his legs and back.

“The first time I’ll see him will be when I get to Plymouth, which will be strange.

“He’s an important player for us, so we’re managing things to give him the best chance of being in the best condition.”

What happened to Anabel Segura?

ANABEL Segura was a 22-year-old Spanish university student who was kidnapped and murdered in 1993.

Her tragic story and the shock to Spanish society caused by her kidnapping will be examined in the Netflix documentary 900 Days Without Anabel.

Anabel’s terrifying kidnapping

Anabel was kidnapped on April 12, 1993, by Emilio Muñoz Guadix with the help of his friend Candido “Candi” Ortiz Aon

She was jogging around the La Moraleja area in Madrid when the pair dragged her into their van at knifepoint.

The pair had arrived in the area with the intention of kidnapping someone, but did not specifically plan to kidnap Anabel.

Anabel’s kidnap was witnessed by a janitor who was unable to read the van’s number plate, but he alerted the authorities right away.

Muñoz and Ortiz took Anabel to a factory in Toledo where they held her hostage.

The university student tried to escape but was caught by her captors, who then murdered her and buried her nearby.

Muñoz and Ortiz began to make ransom calls which offered the 22-year-old’s release in exchange for 150 million Spanish pesetas, which is roughly equivalent to 2 million euros.

Eventually, Anabel’s family decided to pay the ransom but neither of her captors came to the agreed meeting point.

Muñoz and Ortiz decided to take their scheme one step further and sent Anabel’s family a tape recording in which Anabel’s voice could be heard.

It was later revealed that the voice actually belonged to Muñoz’s wife, Felisa Garcia, who was pretending to be Anabel.

When the tape was aired on TV, a Toledo resident recognised Oritz’ voice and called the police which led to the kidnappers’ arrest on September 28, 1995.

Life before April 12, 1993

Before her tragic murder, Anabel was a business student at the private ICADE university.

She was known for her love of running and often took her Sony Walkman with her when she exercised, so she could listen to music.

At the time of her death, Anabel was living with her parents in La Moraleja, a wealthy residential district in the Community of Madrid.

Anabel’s affluent family

Her father José Segura Nájera worked in the petrochemical sector and her mother was a German woman named Sigrid Foles.

Anabel’s parents had met in Germany when he launched his highly successful business.

Anabel also had a sister named Sandra.

Anabel’s kidnappers faced justice

Muñoz and Ortiz confessed to locating Segura’s body but claimed they had only gone to find it with the intent of receiving a reward.

In 1999, the pair were sentenced to 39 years in prison but the Spanish Supreme Court raised their sentences to 43 years.

Ortiz’ wife received a six month sentence for her part in the crime.

After serving 18 years in prison, Muñoz was eventually released in 2013.

When he left prison, he described his motivation for his crime as being “purely economic”.

By this time, Candido Ortiz had died in prison in 2009.

900 Days Without Anabel

900 Days Without Anabel will land on Netflix on November 22, 2024.

The series was directed and co-written by Mónica Palomero and features never-before-heard tapes recorded by the police when they tried to negotiate for Anabel’s release.

The documentary also focuses on the impact that Anabel’s kidnapping had on her family and Spanish society at large.
