Horror Android and iPhone mistake lets ‘Ghost Tap’ crooks clone your card to go on spending sprees

A NEW money scam targeting Android and iPhone owners can rinse victims bank accounts without needing their physical card or phone.

The attack, dubbed ‘Ghost Tap’, is cloning cards linked to Google Pay and Apple Pay, mobile security experts at Threat Fabric have warned.

Cyber crooks are able to relay victims’ card data to money mules worldwide, who can then withdraw cash without a credit card or device even going missing.

A similar strain of malicious software, known as malware, was detected last year.

This older malware, known as NGate and discovered by researchers at ESET, let criminals make small contactless payments and ATM withdrawals.

However, the recent Ghost Tap operation is even more dangerous and harder to detect, experts have warned.

Instead of making withdrawals from ATMs, Ghost Tap crooks can buy whatever they want from any card reader anywhere in the world.

Criminals do this first by stealing your card information and intercept one-time passwords needed for Google Pay and Apple Pay.

This is typically done through banking malware that lays on top of your legitimate banking or digital payment app.

One-time passwords can also be stolen through phishing scams or spyware.

Your card details are then fired out to an extensive network of money mules.

The mules use a relay server to transfer your payment information to their smartphone which can mimic your Google Pay or Apple Pay to purchase items with your hard-earned cash.

To evade tracking, crooks will put their device on “airplane mode”.

Threat Fabric has seen this type of attack become much more common recently, the security firm told Bleeping Computer.

Security experts note that while your bank’s anti-fraud mechanisms may catch out these rogue payments, smaller purchases may go under the radar.

“The new tactic for cash-outs poses a challenge for financial organisations,” ThreatFabric wrote.

“The ability of cybercriminals to scale the fraudulent offline purchases, making multiple small payments in different places, might not trigger the anti-fraud mechanisms and might allow cybercriminals to successfully buy goods that can be further re-sold (like gift cards).”

Yet, even small payments add up.

Experts are concerned that the wide network of money mules globally can result in significant losses for victims.

However, if payments are made that should not be physically possible – such as, purchases made in New York and Amsterdam within 10 minutes of each other – the bank should be able to detect that as fraud.

Now King Charles will going alone to the Royal Variety performance.

She continues to experience some post-viral symptoms after suffering a chest infection earlier in November.

Buckingham Palace is insisting there is no cause for alarm.

Shortly after the King and Queen returned to the UK following their tour of Australia and Samoa, Camilla began experiencing symptoms of a chest infection.

On November 5, Buckingham Palace issued an initial statement revealing that Queen Camilla was unwell with a chest infection.

A palace spokesman said: “Her Majesty The Queen is currently unwell with a chest infection, for which her doctors have advised a short period of rest.

“With great regret, Her Majesty has therefore had to withdraw from her engagements for this week, but she very much hopes to be recovered in time to attend this weekend’s Remembrance events as normal.

“She apologises to all those who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result.”

This saw the Queen miss the annual Field of Remembrance event at Westminster Abbey on November 7.

The Duchess of Gloucester agreed to represent Camilla at the Field of Remembrance.

She also pulled out of the weekend’s Remembrance events, including the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday night and the Sunday service at the Cenotaph.

But, while the infection has been disruptive, it is not expected to have long-term effects on her ability to perform royal duties.

Major price hike blow for thousands of Irish Life customers in just WEEKS – but not all plans will be affected

AN Irish health insurance company is set to hike its premiums from the start of next year again.

Irish Life customers will be slapped with massive increases of 3.7 per cent on average from January 1, according to the Irish Independent.

The insurer already slapped customers with increases twice this year in January this year and July.

The increases are set to affect all customers who renew in the coming months.

And the move could potentially see the price of plans rise by hundreds for families.

Any customer who is due to renew their plan from January 1 onward will be hit with the latest hikes.

It is understood that some plans are expected to increase by 4.3 per cent with the latest premium increase.

However, there is expected to be a reduction on some schemes available for children.

The health insurer has said that the industry is seeing continued increases in the cost of health care.

And they cited high-cost medications as a major factor in this price rise.

Speaking with the Irish Independent, Irish Life Health managing director Ger Davis said that there have been significant increases in day-to-day benefit claims.

He explained that this is because customers are now more proactively managing their health and seeking medical advice and diagnostics.

He said that the number of such claims made to Irish Life have doubled in volume since 2021.

Davis said: “The sustained demand for health care and associated claims cost inflation has regretfully led to the need for increased prices across the health insurance market.

“We understand that customers are dealing with rising prices on a number of fronts and we have taken steps to mitigate our level of increase, and in some instances applied decreases where possible.”

He also told the publication there will be a 2.5 per cent reduction on the price of First Cover – which is set to cost €500 annually.

As well as reductions in price for children’s packages such as the My Plan and Benefit plan of 19 per cent to €200 per child.

NEW COMPETITION

This comes despite the emergence of a new health insurer who was expected to spark a potential price war with other competitors amid shock plans to introduce “simplified” cover.

Level Health, the new insurer backed by Aviva, is led by a number of experienced industry insiders.

The insurer provides just four plans that aim to meet the needs of all and covers both public and private hospitals throughout the country.

This includes “unlimited access to the most innovative tele-medicine services” as well as access to healthcare professionals on a 24/7 time period through video calls and messaging apps.

It also gives customers access to discounts on Aviva‘s home and motor products, as well as free personal accident cover.

They promise that the average family of four will now be able to save €500 when swiching from Laya, VHI or Irish Life when it comes to their plan C coverage.

On all plans, children under three are free.

Jim Dowdall, CEO of Level Health, said: “The launch of Level Health marks a pivotal moment for a broken Irish health insurance market.

“For too long, customers have been overwhelmed by confusing plans, limited options, and a lack of real alternatives.”

Maura’s going to be trouble and I can’t wait for her awkward camp reunion: Rebekah Vardy’s I’m a Celeb diary

Maura and the Reverend: what a breath of fresh air!

I like the naughtiness of a vicar being egged on by a cheeky Love Islander, just wait until the campmates find out the truth.

Any man who falls asleep outside Amnesia nightclub in Ibiza is definitely my cup of tea.

I sense that Maura is going to be a handful but I love her already. I wonder how Barry will feel when he sees her again, especially after dating his son.

Come on, Maura. Spill the tea!

Dean, four stars and he gets the spa treatment, what?! In all fairness, you would take the four stars over nothing so well done, Dean.

I’m not sure why he deserved a bubble bath, maybe to try and lift his spirits as they probably know he’s going to keep getting voted for the trials. Buckle up, teabag, it’s going to be a rough ride.

Danny is doing so well and I still really like him. He’s always positive and always smiley and so friendly, and I love that little cheeky wink he does.

I don’t know why he’s been picked on to do that High Street Horror Bushtucker Trial, surely there’s other deserving campmates.

Melvin. He’s doing so well. What an enthusiastic performance in the offal challenge. Maybe he does have a chance with Vorders after all.

Melvin and Tulisa, very, very sneaky indeed. I’m impressed. Dean was way too blatant, but those two were absolutely pro.

Rebekah's I'm A Celeb ratings

Rebekah has her say on the runners and riders after five episodes.

Hero: Jane for giving up her bed, that was so lovely of her.

Villain: Dean for teabag-gate

Next trial: I think Alan. He’s starting to come a bit anonymous and slip through the net. Surely it’s someone else’s turn and someone that actually wants stars from campmates because they really, really are going to need feeding soon.
