The historic drama series Outlander is currently airing its seventh season, with the finale set to air this week. The show has been one of the best and most consistently rated TV series in the past few years and the latest season has proved that it has passionate people behind it. The series is set to end with season 8 next year.
Outlander’s consistently high ratings have set it apart from other shows of the genre that had the hype but ultimately fizzled out. One of the biggest shows that had a terrible and legacy-ruining ending was HBO’s Game of Thrones, which also had a period fantasy setting and had incredible ratings in the initial seasons.
Outlander sets itself apart from Game of Thrones with consistently high ratings
All shows must end but only a few retain their quality till the very end. The TV format by nature is meant to keep the episodes churning but a few shows managed to break the norms and tell a well-rounded story instead of fizzling out without direction. Shows like The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Succession, and more have become legendary because of this.
However, some shows have an incredible start and keep it consistent only to fizzle out in the end. Every fan remembers the disappointment after watching the series finale of Game of Thrones, the fantasy series from HBO based on George R.R. Martin’s novels. The worldwide phenomenon quickly died due to a terrible ending.
The Starz channel’s historic drama Outlander, which is also based on a fantasy novel series, seems to have cracked it. The show has been consistent in its run throughout the last seven seasons, with the latest season also delivering on promises. Airing since 2014, each episode has been rated in the range of 7.9 to 9.9 out of 10 with most episodes receiving an 8/10 on IMDb.
Game of Thrones also had consistent ratings in the initial seasons but they fumbled in the last two seasons. The final season 8 seemed to have deteriorated in quality with each passing episode and ended on a safe-playing finale that did not impress fans. With Outlander set to end with season 8 too, fans hope that it beats the last-season curse.
Outlander cast member assures fans will be thrilled with season 8
The seventh season of Outlander has been receiving rave reviews as the show’s favorite couple Jamie and Claire reunite after multiple hurdles and are thrown in the midst of the Revolutionary War. The penultimate episode of the season showed Claire being injured by a bullet and the aftermath is set to be seen in the season finale which airs this week.
The series will be ending with the next season and a prequel titled Outlander: Blood of My Blood is also in development. Actress Sophie Skelton, who played Brianna, mentioned that the upcoming season 8 was thrilling and that fans will be amazed by what they have done with the show. She said to Town & Country magazine,
I’m really proud of season 8. I’m excited for people to see it because I think it’s because we weren’t sure if 7 was the end or not. I think 8 really does justice to the entire story as a whole.
Skelton also mentioned that the crew believed the seventh season would be the last and had tried to deal with their grief before the renewal came as a surprise.
Outlander is available to stream on Starz and Amazon Prime Video.
