GARETH Ellis can already see the steps forward Hull FC have to take being made – after understanding why they flopped badly.

New coach John Cartwright may feel like he is as much of a builder as he tries to piece together the wreckage of 2024.

The Australian has made changes after finding things off the field were impacting performance on it – even something as simple as having breakfast together.

And rugby league legend Ellis, part of the backroom staff at FC, believes they are already having a desired effect.

He said: “The changes have made a big difference to coming in every day not being sure where the club’s going and things not being what you’d expect of a Super League club.

“I could see why the players didn’t have that same drive.

“When I was at Wakefield, we knew we were a survival club. We accepted that and got on with it, whereas Hull FC has always had that ambition.

“Now with that investment and the staffing in place, allowing people to just do their job, it can hopefully take the club forward.

“It’s no secret that we were probably surviving as a club for a couple of years, that reflected in performances on the field.

“That bit of investment gives a bit of hope there’s something for the future. That’s probably down the line but for how, we’ve just got to keep building.

“But it just gives you hope there’s light at the end of the tunnel.”

Cartwright said of the changes: “We’ve made a big effort to get the building blocks back to a professional level. It goes right across the club, not just on that gameday.

“Players get checked by the physios first thing, we have breakfast together, they go to training together, get physio checks again, they have lunch together. I’m not sure those things were happening last season.”

Ellis, whose playing career saw him become an NRL superstar at Wests Tigers, showed he still has it in Sunday’s hybrid 745 Game, which saw rugby league legends take on famous faces from union to honour Ed Slater, Rob Burrow and Doddie Weir and raise funds for motor neurone disease charities.

On Monday, he was back at the day job but is thought to have already said he would do it again next year.

The 43-year-old, who looks like he could still do a job in Super League, added: “It was like a little camp. It was fantastic.

“When Wigan played Bath in 1996, there was a bit of needle, whereas in this, there was so much respect.

“It would be nice to think it could happen every year, even though my knees were swelling up when I walked off. 10,000 people came to watch!

“And if I could play once every three months, I probably still could but while I used to join running drills at Hull FC, I don’t so much anymore – your mind can do things your legs can’t.”

Tennis power couple in ‘crisis’ as Jannik Sinner ‘takes a break’ from Nick Kyrgios’s ex weeks after US Open kiss

The tennis power couple appear to be in crisis with Kalinskaya nowhere to be seen at Sinner’s recent events.

They shared a kiss after the Italian won the US Open in September but have since seemingly drifted apart.

The couple do not follow each other on Instagram and Kalinskaya did not support her man as Sinner won his first ATP Finals event in Turin – she was instead on holiday in Miami.

It is understood the pair are taking a break amid a “crisis” so they can “better understand their relationship and future“.

Sinner, 23, also shared some cold comments about his relationship that has only helped to add fuel to the break up fire.

According to sources in Russia, he said: “Having a girlfriend is something that makes you feel good or makes you feel bad.

“I want it to be something that seems very natural, that enters my life normally.

“I can’t afford to change as a player or as a person. This hasn’t happened, which is why it works.”

Kalinskaya, 25, may also be choosing to focus on her own game as she looks to improve on her world number 14 ranking.

I’m A Celebrity fans ‘spot Dean McCullough’s game plan’ as he quits Bushtucker Trial – and is voted for another

I’M A CELEBRITY fans are convinced they’ve sussed Dean McCullough’s “game plan.”

It comes after the BBC Radio 1 DJ quit the second Bushtucker Trial – aired on Tuesday – after scooping two stars out of 10.

The broadcaster had admitted he had a fear of enclosed spaces – which wasn’t helped when he was enclosed in an Egyptian tomb which filled up with sand.

He was heard screaming “this is hell” as a series of bugs were poured in at the top, scuttling around his head.

After answering two questions correctly he then shouted out “I’m A Celebrity … get me out of here” to see him released from the Sinister Sarcophagus.

He told hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly “I can’t move my legs,” before promptly telling the duo he “hated” them in a tongue-in-cheek remark.

Back in camp, the 31-year-old tearfully apologised to his fellow contestants.

He said: “I feel like I’ve let you all down.”

Trying to reassure him, Jane Moore said: “I totally understood why you panicked,” and Tulisa said: “God loves a trier, mate.”

Yet fans reckon there’s a method behind his behaviour.

One took to X to post: “Does Dean have a game plan here?”

Another suggested: “GK Barry and Dean are deliberately trying to be unpopular so they get voted to do the challenges which will give them the airtime.”

A third posted: “Omg Dean you’ve done it to yourself now!! You’ll be voted in for every trial now till you grow a backbone!!”

One then added: “Decent crew on #imaceleb, just feel Dean is a bit false though.”

Yet, if this is his intention, it could be paying off.

Tuesday’s episode also saw GK Barry – real name Grace Keeling – and campmate Dean discover they are doing the next Bushtucker Trial.

I'm A Celebrity 2024

i'm A Celebrity is back for its 24th series, with a batch of famous faces living in the Aussie jungle. The Sun's Jake Penkethman takes a look at the stars on the show this year...

  • Coleen Rooney – Arguably the most famous name in the camp, the leading WAG, known for her marriage to Wayne Rooney, has made a grand return to TV as she looks to put the Wagatha Christie scandal behind her. The Sun revealed the mum-of-four had bagged an eye-watering deal worth over £1.5million to be on the show this year making her the highest-paid contestant ever.
  • Tulisa – The popstar and former X Factor judge has made her triumphant TV comeback by signing up to this year’s I’m A Celeb after shunning TV shows for many years. Known for being a member of the trio, N-Dubz, Tulisa became a household name back in 2011 when she signed on to replace Cheryl on ITV show The X Factor in a multi-million pound deal.
  • Alan Halsall – The actor, known for playing the long-running role of Tyrone Dobbs on ITV soap opera Coronation Street, was originally signed up to head Down Under last year but an operation threw his scheduled appearance off-course. Now he has become the latest Corrie star to win over both the viewers and his fellow celebrities.
  • Melvin Odoom – The Radio DJ has become a regular face on TV screens after rising to fame with presenting roles on Kiss FM, BBC Radio 1 and 4Music. He has already been for a spin on the Strictly dancefloor and co-hosted The Xtra Factor with Rochelle Humes in 2015 but now he is facing up to his biggest challenge yet – the Aussie jungle.
  • GK Barry – The UK’s biggest social media personality, GK, whose real name is Grace Keeling, has transformed her TikTok stardom into a lucrative career. Aside from her popular social media channels, she hosts the weekly podcast, Saving Grace, and regularly appears on ITV talk show, Loose Women. She has even gone on to endorse popular brand such as PrettyLittleThing, KFC and Ann Summers.
  • Dean McCullough – A rising star amongst this year’s bunch of celebs, Dean first achieved notability through his radio appearances on Gaydio and BBC Radio 1. He was chosen to join the BBC station permanently in 2021 and has featured prominently ever since. He has enjoyed a crossover to ITV over the past year thanks to his guest slots on Big Brother spin-off show, Late & Live.
  • Oti Mabuse – The pro dancer has signed up to her latest TV show after making her way through the biggest programmes on the box. She origianlly found fame on Strictly Come Dancing but has since branched out into the world of TV judging with appearances on former BBC show The Greatest Dancer as well as her current role on ITV’s Dancing On Ice.
  • Danny Jones – The McFly star was drafted into the programme last minute as a replacement for Tommy Fury. Danny is the second member of McFly to enter the jungle, after Dougie Poynter won the show in 2011. He is also considered a rising star on ITV as he’s now one of the mentors on their Saturday night talent show, The Voice, along with bandmate Tom.
  • Maura Higgins – The Irish TV beauty first found fame on Love Island where she found a brief connection with dancer Curtis Pritchard. Since then, she has competed on Dancing On Ice as well as hosting the Irish version of the beauty contest, Glow Up. Since last year, she has been working on building up her career in the US by being the social media correspondent and host of Aftersun to accompany Love Island USA. She even guest hosted an episode of the spin-off, Love Island Games, in place of Maya Jama last year.
  • Jane Moore – The Loose Women star and The Sun columnist is braving the creepy crawlies this year. The star is ready for a new challenge – having recently split from her husband. It will be Jane’s first foray into reality TV with the telly favourite having always said no to reality shows in the past.
  • Barry McGuigan – Former pro boxer Barry is the latest fighting champ to head Down Under following in the footsteps of Tony Bellew and Amir Khan. It comes after a tough few years for Irish star Barry, who lost his daughter Danika to breast cancer. He told The Late Late Show in 2021: “She was such an intrinsic part of the family that every day we ache.”
  • Rev. Richard Coles – Former BBC radio host the Rev Richard Coles is a late arrival on I’m A Celebrity, and he’s ready to spill the beans on his former employer. The former Communards and Strictly star, said the BBC did not know its a**e from its elbow last year. An insider said: “Rev Coles will have a variety of tales to tell from his wild days as a pop star in the Eighties, through to performing on Strictly and his later life as a man of the cloth.”
  • The pair, who have already given themselves a reputation for being screamers, will be seen taking on Drown In The Dumps on Wednesday night following a public vote.

It came after Dean sparked quit fears just two days in.

One said on X: “Mate mark my words Dean will be the first to walk #ImACeleb.”

Another added on the social media platform: “I honestly fear that Dean or GK might end up walking and leaving the jungle.”

Some viewers also reckon YouTube star GK Barry has a game plan, too.

After her Vile Volcano trial, fans reckon she might have a game plan.

Commenting on an Instagram post about the star, who took on the Bushtucker Trial last night, one person wrote, “The screaming had people assuming she wouldn’t do well, she isn’t that scared, she smashed that!”

Man Utd joker Ruben Amorim is renowned for doing impressions of other managers and ‘clowning around’

NEW boss Ruben Amorim will be hoping to do more than just a good impersonation of a football manager at Manchester United.

Yet behind the scenes, Amorim is known for being a good mimic.

    Getty

In fact, throughout his playing career at Belenenses and Benfica, Amorim was a massive joker and did impressions of his gaffers.

And Amorim, 39, has kept his sense of humour.

He said: “I’m a very jolly guy, but more within my closed circle. I was always given to clowning around — and I did it a lot.

“I miss the changing room a lot because you are a child there. I only became an adult when I stopped playing football.

“But I’ve always played the clown and I’m good at imitating.

“I often imitated Jorge Jesus [his ex-Benfica boss] and he knows it. Always with respect.

“Once he went to a Uefa coaches meeting and missed training — and I took over training.

“His assistant coach, the fitness coach, the physios, all came to see the session and see what I was like.”

What Man Utd said on hiring EACH of their post-Fergie managers

    David Moyes

“All the skills needed to build on United’s phenomenal legacy.”

    Louis van Gaal

“One of the outstanding managers in the game today.”

    Jose Mourinho

“Quite simply the best manager in the game today.”

    Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

“A wealth of experience, with a desire to give young players their chance and a deep understanding of the culture of the club.”

    Erik ten Hag

“One of the most exciting and successful coaches in Europe.”

    Ruben Amorim

“One of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football.”

Amorim’s cousin, Bruno Simao, said: “He loves imitating people and is very good at it. He’s really funny.”

But new Man Utd manager Amorim also learnt something serious from former boss Jesus — that players can sometimes be given too much information by a coach.

He told Portuguese paper Record: “He wanted to give a lot of information, so you have to have more time training and watching more videos.

“It improved the team but exhausted a lot of players, so every two years he had to clean out the squad. Players can’t always take so much information.

“Some can handle that pressure and others can’t.

“Jorge is a coach who is tiring. It’s a lot of intensity and tactical information, every day loaded on to the player.

“I worked a lot of years with him and it’s obvious that I have a similar level of work ethic to him.

“But we have different personalities. I’ll be hard without being tiresome.

“You have to create a link with players, always leave them with a positive thought, happy about training, about playing, so that they can put in a good performance.

“All players feel it, but they also feel a great will during the game, when things are going well and you’re winning because you’re comfortable and have all the information.

“That helps you a lot to be a better player. If you know the opponent and know what you have to do in every situation in the game, you go more freely on to the pitch.

“A football coach isn’t like an engineer where you do this and it’s always right. No, you need a lot of chemistry with the group you have.

“If you don’t have chemistry, you have a bad result.”

Yet Amorim believes all managers should avoid social media.

And he told Maisfutebol: “I don’t look at anything, because I can’t look. Anyone who is a coach shouldn’t look.

“It’s impossible to stand all the comments and all that information. That’s why I don’t have it.

“At the start, when I started to fall in love with my wife, it also helped me to change my life a bit and disappear from social networks.

“That stuff about Instagram and Facebook, it seems it started a long time ago.

“But when I was single that didn’t exist and now I thank God for that!”

While Amorim is preparing for his huge test in English football, he still regrets not having a better education.

And the Old Trafford supremo revealed he still gets teased by his wife, Maria Joao Diogo, for leaving school before taking his exams, aged 18.

By then, the player who was released by Benfica as a youngster had already signed a professional contract with another Lisbon side, Belenenses.

Amorim told Portuguese paper Expresso: “I had an agreement with my mother.

“I would continue at school until I signed a professional contract.

“I signed when I was 17. Today, I regret it a lot. If I’d taken my exams, I could have done the 12th year.

“I could also have entered a top college.

“My wife is an electrotechnical engineer and she throws that in my face every day.”
