Man, 92, charged with rape and murder of woman found strangled to death at home 57 years ago
A MAN has been charged with the rape and murder of a woman found strangled to death at her home 57 years ago.
Louisa Dunne was discovered in Easton, Bristol, by a neighbour on June 28, 1967.
The 75-year-old had been raped, with her cause of death given as strangulation and asphyxiation.
Ryland Headley, 92, has now been charged with rape and murder.
He is due to appear at Bristol Magistrates’ Court via video link this morning.
DI Dave Marchant said: “This development marks a hugely significant moment in this investigation.
“Now criminal proceedings are underway it’s important to stress the defendant has the right to a fair trial. Any speculation or misinformation on the circumstances of this case has the potential to prejudice these ongoing proceedings.
“We’ve updated Louisa’s family about this charging decision and a specialist liaison officer will continue to support them in the coming days, weeks and months.”
The force had re-examined the case in 2023 and reviewed further forensic evidence before making an arrest.
The horror unfolded in 1967 when Louisa’s neighbour noticed a window slightly open at the home she lived in alone.
When they went to investigate, they discovered the pensioner had been raped and strangled in the living room.
A huge investigation was launched as officers tried to piece together Louisa’s final movements.
They discovered she had gone to see her friend Alice at her nearby home earlier that evening.
The pair shared dessert together before twice-widowed Louise headed back home at around 7.30pm.
She was last seen standing on her doorstep at 10.30pm, which locals said was unusual for the OAP.
Officers believed the killer had broken in between 11.30pm and 4am, but said there was no sign of a struggle at her home.
Police found a palm print left near the open window but the horrific case eventually went cold.

FIGHT fans have outrageously claimed fresh footage from Jake Paul’s showdown with Mike Tyson proves the bout was fixed.
Former undisputed heavyweight champion Tyson returned from a 19-year-long professional layoff to lock horns with the YouTube sensation in a Texas tussle last Friday.
The boxing legend looked every bit his 58 years as he struggled to mount any serious threat and suffered a decision defeat.
It seemed that Paul could have taken out the beloved Tyson had he put his foot on the gas.
And some viewers of the fight have claimed new footage of Paul getting his head out of the way of a slow and telegraphed right hand proves the bout was rigged.
A slow-motion clip of Paul’s good defensive work started doing the rounds on social media, prompting baseless claims he’d come to a prefight agreement with Tyson.
In an accompanying caption with the video, one wrote on X: “Just in case anyone had doubts…”
Another said: “If it was real Tyson would have destroyed him and been out of the ring in less than 2 minutes.”
And another said: “That may have been the KO shot that Tyson obviously pulled.”
One remarked: “Rigged as f**k.”

The fix allegations quickly came to the attention of Paul, who issued a scathing response on brother Logan’s Impaulsive podcast.
‘The Problem Child’ said: “People are like, ‘Oh it’s rigged because look at him on the pads.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion played his final match on Tuesday in a Davis Cup tie for Spain in front of an adoring home crowd.
The 38-year-old was unable to fight against Father Time as well as Dutch opponent Botic van de Zandschulp as he went down 6-4, 6-4 in a match-up between the Spanish and Netherlands teams.
Spain’s elimination as a whole was sealed in the doubles after Van de Zandschulp and Wesley Koolhof saw off Nadal heir Carlos Alcaraz and Marcel Granollers.
Afterwards the tears flowed as the greatest clay court player tennis has ever seen summed up how wrought with emotion he was.
He told the crowd: “What I have tried to do is to be a good person and I hope you have perceived that.
“I leave the tennis world having met so many friends along the way. I have so many people to thank.
“I leave with the peace of mind of having left a sporting and personal legacy I can be proud about.”
While his emotional state is understandable, Rory McIlroy’s heartfelt tribute on social media came a little left field since the pair aren’t known to be close.
However, both are major Nike athletes so surely would’ve crossed paths at its corporate events over the years.
The Northern Irish ace reflected: “From watching you win your first grand slam in 2005 to watching you win your last in 2022, you have been a hero of mine and an inspiration to how I approach my own career.
“You will be so missed and tennis won’t be the same without you.
“Congratulations on one of the finest sporting careers of all time. See you on the course soon! Your friend, Rory.”
McIlroy was far from the only global sporting superstar to hail Nadal as one of the all-time greats either as Roger Federer barely left a dry eye among fans with his open letter to his long-time adversary.
The tennis legends first met in Miami in 2004 and overall faced each other 40 times on court – Nadal leads 24-16 in the head-to-head stakes – including in NINE major finals.
Away from the court, they formed a close bond and in February 2020, their charity ‘Match for Africa’ was watched by a world-record crowd of 50,000 in Cape Town, South Africa.
Federer, 43, held hands briefly with the Spanish superstar and sobbed uncontrollably when he retired from professional tennis two years ago at the Laver Cup in London following a doubles defeat together.
With the shoe now being on the other foot, Federer posted: “As you get ready to graduate from tennis, I’ve got a few things to share before I maybe get emotional.
“Let’s start with the obvious. You beat me – a lot.
“More than I managed to beat you. You challenged me in ways no-one else could.
“On clay, it felt like I was stepping into your backyard, and you made me work harder than I ever thought I could just to hold my ground.
“You made me reimagine my game – even going so far as to change the size of my racquet head, hoping for any edge.
“I’m not a very superstitious person but you took it to the next level. Your whole process. All those rituals.
“Assembling your water bottles like toy soldiers in formation, fixing your hair, adjusting your underwear.
“All of it with the highest intensity. Secretly, I kind of loved the whole thing. Because it was so unique – it was so you.
“And you know what, Rafa, you made me enjoy the game even more.
“After the 2004 Australian Open, I achieved the number one ranking for the first time. I thought I was on top of the world. And I was.
“Until two months later, when you walked on the court in Miami in your red sleeveless shirt, showing off those biceps, and you beat me convincingly.

Shock discovery in Chernobyl’s mutant black frogs may mean civilisation can finally RETURN to irradiated exclusion zone
A SHOCK discovery in mutant black frogs could lead to humans returning to the abandoned Chernobyl nuclear disaster zone.
Scientists have hoped their findings would bring civilisation back to one of the world’s worst disaster site.
A 1986 meltdown at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Pripyat, Ukraine, caused the the largest release of radioactive material into the environment in history.
A 1,000-square-mile exclusion zone was created around the disaster site to avoid cancer-causing radiation, and only around 1,000 residents have returned to the area, in the nearly four decades since they fled.
Despite this, animals have roamed these forbidden lands and claimed this area as home.
One of these creatures has been the unique eastern tree frogs living near the site in northern Ukraine.
Researchers revealed in a 2022 study that these frogs had black instead of green skin.
New studies have disclosed that these Chernobyl frogs lived just as long as their green counterparts, and their ageing rate was not affected by the radiation levels.
This shock discovery could mean the 1,000-square-mile restricted zone could be safe for human habitation again.
A co-author of the new study, Dr Germán Orizaola of the University of Oviedo in Spain, explained what their discovery in frogs could mean for humans.
Orizaola said: “The age structure and average age that we detected in Chernobyl is similar to that from other populations of the species in eastern Europe or the Middle East.
“It’s also similar to populations of a sister species – European tree frogs, or Hyla arborea.”
The researcher added that the higher melanin pigment in the Chernobyl frogs’ skin protected them again radiation.
Despite this, Dr Orizaola explained this discovery could show the exclusion zone was show safe for human habitation once more.
He said: “We do not think that radiation is hurting these frogs now.
“One of the main reasons should be the decay in radiation levels during the last 38 years.
“More than 90% of the radioactive material released by the accident has already decayed and disappeared from the zone.”
Dr Orizaola added that “reoccupation of most of the zone by humans should be possible at anytime.”
What happened at Chernobyl?
THE nuclear catastrophe in Chernobyl claimed 31 lives as well as leaving thousands of people and animals exposed to potentially fatal radiation.
When an alarm bellowed out at the nuclear plant on April 26, 1986, workers looked on in horror as the control panels signaled a major meltdown in the number four reactor.
The safety switches had been switched off in the early hours to test the turbine but the reactor overheated and generated a blast – the equivalent of 500 nuclear bombs.
The reactor’s roof was blown off and a plume of radioactive material was blasted into the atmosphere.
As air was sucked into the shattered reactor, it ignited flammable carbon monoxide gas causing a fire which burned for nine days.
The catastrophe released at least 100 times more radiation than the atom bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
Soviet authorities waited 24 hours before evacuating the nearby town of Pripyat – giving the 50,000 residents just three hours to leave their homes.
After the accident traces of radioactive deposits were found in Belarus where poisonous rain damaged plants and caused animal mutations.
But the devastating impact was also felt in Scandinavia, Switzerland, Greece, Italy, France and the UK.
An 18-mile radius known as the “Exclusion Zone” was set up around the reactor following the disaster.
ATOMIC ANIMALS
Black frogs have not been the only unique animal discovery in this nuclear disaster land.
Wild wolves in the area have developed a “superpower” due to this radiation exposure, The Sun has previously reported.
These mutant creatures could unexpectedly help give humans a better chance at surviving cancer.
The wolves have developed cancer-resilient genomes – which has been helpful in surviving the high levels of radiation that have plagued the human-free zone.

VLADIMIR Putin is ready to discuss a Ukraine ceasefire deal with Donald Trump, sources claim.
But the Russian tyrant is understood to have a list of heavy demands – including Kyiv abandoning its plan to join Nato.
Trump will take over as US president in January and has promised to end the Ukraine war within 24 hours of taking charge.
And insiders say Putin is open to discussing a peace deal.
Bullish Vlad is already dictating hardline terms for any deal brokered by Trump, sources say.
The Kremlin could agree to freeze conflict along frontlines – but will refuse to surrender any significant territory, five current and former Russian officials told Reuters.
Vlad’s forces are continuing to gain ground and Russia claims to have grabbed more eastern territory in recent days.
Sources say there could be room for negotiation over the precise carve-up of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.
Moscow claims the four eastern regions are wholly part of Russia – but open-source data shows up to 30 per cent is still held by Ukrainian defenders.
Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War said: “The manner in which the Kremlin is trying to set its terms for negotiations strongly signals that Russia’s objectives remain unchanged and still amount to full Ukrainian capitulation.
“The Kremlin does not appear any more willing to make concessions to the incoming Trump administration than it was to the current administration.”
Embattled Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky has vowed to not rest until every Russian soldier is driven out of his territory.
Earlier this month, Putin insisted Ukraine must be “neutral” for any chance of peace.
He said: “If there is no neutrality, it is difficult to imagine the existence of any good-neighborly relations between Russia and Ukraine.
“Why? Because this would mean that Ukraine will be constantly used as a tool in the wrong hands and to the detriment of the interests of the Russian Federation.”
But it is feared brokering a peace deal could be delayed by Joe Biden’s decision 1,000 days into the war to allow Ukraine to fire US-supplied missiles into Russia.
Kyiv for the first time on Tuesday used ATACMS missiles to strike Russian territory.
Just hours before, Putin’s mouthpiece Dmitry Peskov said: “Putin has already said that freezing the conflict will not work in any way.
“And the missile authorisation is a very dangerous escalation on the part of the United States.”
And today the US embassy in Kyiv has been urgently evacuated as the Ukrainian capital braces for a huge revenge strike from Russia.
Furious Putin puppets warned Moscow would “react accordingly”.
The US embassy quickly shut its doors today after receiving information about a “potential significant air attack” on Kyiv.
It said: “Out of an abundance of caution, the embassy will be closed, and embassy employees are being instructed to shelter in place.”
The embassy told US citizens to “be prepared to immediately shelter in the event an air alert is announced”.
The UK government is also examining the security situation for Brits in Kyiv “incredibly closely”.
Putin has repeatedly warned that Moscow will respond to Ukraine’s strikes with US-made weapons deep into Russia.
In September, he said it would “mean that Nato countries are at war with Russia”.
And just days after the US approved Ukrainian use of its far-reaching rockets, Vlad signed a new doctrine to lower the bar for launching a nuclear strike.
Almost simultaneously, Ukrainian media reported the first use of the ATACMS missiles on Russian territory.
