Urgent warning to iPhone owners as Apple will DELETE iCloud backups for older versions of iOS in days – check yours now
APPLE is set to delete the iCloud data of iPhones that are still stuck using an older version of iOS.
iOS is the operating system that iPhones run on.
It means if you’re using a really old iPhone, on a decade-old version of Apple’s iOS, you could lose all your iCloud backups.
Fortunately, few people will be using an iPhone and iOS that old.
People at risk are those using iOS 8 and below.
These are near-ancient iOS versions in the Apple world, having been released more than 10 years ago.
From 18 December, iCloud backups will require iOS 9 or higher.
Handsets using any software version below iOS 8 will be unable to back up their iPhones to iCloud until that deadline.
After that date, your existing backups will be deleted, and you won’t be able to make new ones.
This is even the case for iPhone owners paying for iCloud storage.
So be mindful that you need to cancel your subscription, or upgrade to a newer iPhone model, by 18 December.
You can check which iOS your iPhone is operating on in Settings.
Simply open Settings, click General and tap Software Update – here, you will be able to see which iOS version you have.
The move forms part of Apple’s new software requirements.
Under new rules, iPhones will need to have at least iOS 10 to use certain iCloud features, such as iCloud Drive and iCloud Photos.
Even higher versions are needed for perks like iCloud+, iCloud Drive folder sharing, iCloud Shared Photo Library, Messages in iCloud, and iCloud tabs for Safari.
Apple has broken down each iOS version necessary for each iCloud feature here.
iPhone tricks to try today
Here are some of the best...
- Typing cursor – When typing, hold down the space bar to turn your keyboard into a trackpad, letting you move around words and sentences more easily
- Close all Safari tabs – To do this in one go, simply hold the overlapped squares in the bottom right-hand corner, and press close all tabs
- Delete lots of photos quickly – Hold down on a photo and then drag your finger diagonally in Photos to select lots of images at once, then hit delete
- Convert currency quickly – Swipe down from the top of your Home screen, then tap in the bar and type a currency (like €200) and it will automatically covert to your local currency
- Check if you’re due a battery upgrade – Batteries inside smartphones degrade over time. Just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health, and check out the Maximum Capacity reading. Generally a battery is considered worn when you’re down to 80% capacity. If you’re below, you can buy a battery swap from Apple
- Move apps around faster – Hold an app until it starts wiggling, then (while still holding) tap other apps, causing them to stack so you can move them around easier
‘Beautiful soul’ – Heartache as tributes pour for ‘always smiling’ young woman who died in hospital weeks after crash
HEARTBREAKING tributes have been pouring in for an “always smiling” young woman who sadly passed away after being seriously injured in a crash last month.
Jennifer O’Shaughnessy was critically injured after the car she was travelling in collided with a bus carrying children on the Cork-Limerick border on October 27.
The Cork native, who was 35-years-old, was a passenger of the car involved in the crash on the R513 at Ballylanders, Co Limerick, just 14km from Mitchelstown on the Cork to Limerick regional road.
She was transferred from the scene by helicopter to Cork University Hospital where she sadly passed away on November 15 after succumbing to her injuries.
The bus involved in the crash was carrying over 20 children at the time but none of them were seriously injured.
The Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission is investigating the horrific crash as it is understood that the male driver was an off-duty member of the Armed Support Unit.
As is the case with any member of the force involved in a serious incident, the matter was referred to GSOC.
A notice online told how Jennifer died “peacefully” surrounded by her loving family and in the “wonderful care” of the staff at the Cork University Hospital.
She has been remembered as the “dearly beloved” daughter of Marie and Tim, the “much loved” sister of Sharyn, Laura and Emma, the “devoted” godmother of Aaron and the “loving partner” of Razvan.
A notice online read: “Jennifer will be deeply missed and always remembered by her heartbroken family and partner, brother-in-law Paul, Robert, godson Aaron, aunts, uncles, relatives, work colleagues in Eli Lilly, and a wide circle of friends.”
Mourners have remembered tragic Jennifer as a “beautiful soul” who was “always smiling”, with some telling how they have “great memories” with the young woman.
One said: “Sincere condolences to Jennifer’s family and friends on the sad and untimely passing of their beautiful Jennifer.
“I had the pleasure of knowing Jennifer through working with her on occasions in Heatons/Sports Direct. She was always smiling and fun to be around. May her gentle soul rest in peace.”
Another said: “Beautiful Jen. A wonderful, bright, funny girl taken far too soon. To your family, partner and extended circle of friends I am so sorry for your loss.”
A third described Jennifer as a “kind, bubbly and lovely person” whilst another told how her passings marks a “huge loss” to all who knew her.
FUNERAL DETAILS
Another mourned added: “I have a heart full of memories and antics that we got up to I will cherish them forever. Rest in peace gorgeous girl.”
A requiem mass for Jennifer will take place at 12pm today in the Church of the Way of the Cross in Togher followed by a funeral to St Patrick’s Cemetary in Crosshaven.
The funeral notice online added: “A life so beautifully lived, deserves to be beautifully remembered.”
Gardai are continuing to appeal for witnesses to contact them and the probe into the accident is ongoing.
A GSOC spokesman said: “GSOC would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the road traffic collision or saw the grey Toyota Auris car driving in the area prior to the collision, or who may have captured it on CCTV, dashcams and/or on a mobile device.
“Anyone with information which may be of assistance to the investigation is asked to contact GSOC at 0818 600 800 or info@gsoc.ie.”
‘Unbelievably traumatic – Gran’s pain as daughter, 36, & granddaughter, 4, trapped in Dubai after travel ban
A DUBLIN mum is turning to the Irish Government to help get her daughter and granddaughter home after a travel ban in UAE.
Trish McCabe is claiming “it’s not that complicated” in getting her daughter and granddaughter home for Christmas.
Alma, 36, and her daughter Isabella, 4, have been stuck in Abu Dhabi since March 2022 after her German ex-husband placed a travel ban on their daughter.
This is despite the family courts in the UAE awarding Alma full custody and parental responsibility.
The Irish Embassy has not pushed the UAE to delete a travel ban placed on Isabella during the custody battle.
Trish said: “My daughter has been through an unbelievable traumatic time in the Emirates.
“It’s been hell but she’s won all parental rights and thought she’d be able to return home to Ireland. She’s won everything.
“All she wants is to come home to her family and the only thing standing in her way is a local travel ban.”
She added that the Embassy have claimed there isn’t a lot they can do in the situation.
She continued: “The Embassy has said they can’t really do anything but it’s a really simple request. She has custody.
“Isabella is an Irish citizen, was born in Ireland and they just need to come home.
“After everything they’ve been through, we just want to be reunited.”
Radha Stirling, founder of Detained in Dubai who worked on getting Tori Towey home after her arrest, is urging the Irish government to step in.
She said: “I’ve come to know Alma and her mum Trish recently.
“They were hoping the custody win would remove the travel ban on Isabella and it should have, but unfortunately, things move very slowly in the UAE and there is little concern for the effect this is having on Alma and Isabella.”
‘NIGHTMARE’ LEGAL PROCESS
She added that if they are free to leave the UAE, it will require “diplomatic conversations between the Irish and UAE governments“.
She explained: “When marriages end in Dubai, the legal process is a nightmare for foreigners.
“It’s something to consider for families and couples considering relocating. If anything goes wrong, they are faced with an often unfair and painful judiciary.
“Despite the odds being stacked against her, Alma has won her cases and wants nothing more than to be home for Christmas and able to heal from a truly difficult experience.”
Both Alma and her mum Trish have reached out to representatives in Ireland to help with their case, including Taoiseach Simon Harris, Tanaiste Michael Martin and Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald.
Detained in Dubai are also suggesting that the Irish government liaise with the UAE’s foreign office and Ambassador in order to bring Alma and Isabella home.

Why Everyone Is Loving M&S

“M&S has really pulled it out of the bag this season, there is so much good product to be excited about.
“A brand once known for its ‘frumpy fashion’ that notion is long gone with it now being one of the leading high street stores for womenswear.
“Its handbag range in particular is super strong with them selling 170% vs plan, with lots more designer dupes for just a fraction of the price.
“The brand is now also the #1 for style perceptions, compared to the #3 spot it had last year, this comes from a really strong design team focused on modernising the brand, not only taking into consideration how the pieces look, but how easy they are to wear also.
“Price is also a big factor with you being able to get many good quality pieces all for under £30.
“After having a sneak peak of the upcoming collection there are so many more amazing pieces that are dropping over the next few months to keep your eyes on.
“Think leopard print dresses, colourful co-ords, embroidered boho jackets, plus lots of swimwear and amazing accessories, as well as great wardrobe staples that will last year on year.”

Maroon has been seen on big-name designer catwalks such as Tom Ford, Gucci, Valentino and Versace, to name a few.
Perfect to mix with your current wardrobe, don’t think that this deep shade is just for the colder months.
It’s also great to wear at this time of year and one you can continue wearing throughout the rest of the year and beyond.
