Paddy Power defends new £1.5m Jockeys’ Cup after criticism from owners
PADDY POWER has staunchly defended the new £1.5million jockeys’ competition, despite criticism from owners.
The David Power Jockeys’ Cup offers riders the chance to compete for points in ITV-televised races, culminating in a £500,000 top prize for the winner.
While trainers and stable staff are also set to benefit, the initiative has drawn criticism from the Racehorse Owners Association, whose chief executive, Louise Norman, expressed disappointment at the lack of recognition or rewards for owners.
Norman remarked: “Whilst we fully support and understand the need for the industry to be innovative in order that it improves engagement and raises its profile, the ROA is disappointed that the new David Power Jockeys’ Cup has not taken into consideration any recognition or reward for racehorse owners who, as the largest investors into the industry, are yet again overlooked during any discussions or communications.”
However, Flutter Entertainment’s brand ambassador, Paddy Power, defended the initiative, calling it a positive and forward-thinking addition to the sport.
Speaking on behalf of the bookmaker Paddy Power said: “I’d be absolutely respectful of every stakeholder but I think there’s a bigger picture and this is good news.
“It’s innovative, something new and not replacing something else. It’s something extra.”
He continued to emphasise the broader benefits for the racing industry: “If there’s more eyeballs on the sport that’s great.
“People start following it better and maybe the audience profile becomes a bit younger. There’s a lot of knock-on benefits to it. What’s good for the sport is good for everyone.
“Without owners there would be no racing, without trainers there would be no racing and without jockeys there would be no racing, so everybody is really important.
“I think on reflection this is a new £1.5million investment, not coming from somewhere else, going into a prize fund to create a new initiative.”
Paddy Power also suggested the competition could boost the sport’s popularity by making jockeys more relatable and engaging to fans: “Hopefully, it’ll make more personalities out of these guys, make them more accessible and recognisable to people watching at home.
“If you think about it, they’re the constants. We’ll have loads of horses and colours on a race-day, but these are the ones who will be here the next day and the day after that. They’ll be different horses and colours. In terms of following a narrative, this is what people can relate to.
“That’ll make it more and more exciting as the season goes on and in an ideal world, we’ll get two, three or four jockeys fighting it out in the last few weeks and it becomes a good storyline for the Champions series.
“If you look at other sports, the way they’ve connected with their audience, expanded them and re-engaged the existing fanbase, it just works. There’s no reason it can’t work for racing.”

Martin Lewis reveals the cheapest supermarket to buy a 1litre bottle of Baileys this week – and it only costs £10
MARTIN LEWIS’ MoneySavingExpert has revealed the cheapest place to bag a one litre bottle of Baileys this week ahead of Christmas.
With December just around the corner, shoppers are rushing to stock up on the boozy festive-favourite.
The weekly MoneySavingExpert newsletter revealed that the best place to buy is now Tesco, with a 1L bottle selling for just £10 with a ClubCard.
1L Baileys bottles at the supermarket are typically £22 – meaning you can get it for more than half its original price.
This offer is currently the cheapest around, with Asda, Amazon, Ocado and Sainsbury’s (with a Nectar Card) listing the item for £13.
But the Tesco offer only runs until Monday December 9, so you’ll have to be quick.
Or, you can wait to see what other deals emerge in the run up to the Christmas period.
Baileys prices are constantly changing around this time of year, with many quipping the trend “the battle of the Baileys”.
Earlier this month, Sainsbury’s Nectar Card holders could purchase the 1 litre item for £10 for a limited time.
Around this time Costco was also selling the bottles for £9.99 a pop.
And in Morrisons you could get one for just £8.50 with a More Card membership if you spent £45 or more on groceries.
These deals have now ended – but many more are expected to come back.
The team at MoneySavingExpert said: “It’s possible we’ll see more supermarkets drop the price of a litre-bottle to £10 (perhaps even a little lower) in the lead-up to Christmas.
“We’ll update readers as new Baileys offers crop up.”
Baileys is famed for its iconic sweet and milky taste, with notes of vanilla and chocolate.
You can drink it neat and cold on ice – or you can use it to make a festive cocktail.
Some people like to put it in their hot chocolate for a warm festive tipple.
It is always important to remember to compare prices before buying Baileys so you don’t miss out.
Comparison sites like Trolley are great for getting the latest updates on supermarket prices.
By searching for the specific brand, the website will compare costs based on price per 100ml.
For example, in some cases it is more cost efficient to opt for a larger 1L bottle than a 70cl bottle so you get more bang for your buck.
In Sainsbury’s, a 1L Baileys bottle which sells for £13 means you are spending £1.30 per 100ml.
Meanwhile, the 70cl bottle, which costs just £10 and might seem cheaper, actually means you are spending £1.43 per 100ml.
Therefore it helps to work out how much you are spending, compared to how much you are getting.
Other ways to keep track of the newest deals include signing up to a membership with your usual supermarket.
Clubcard and Nectar Card deals change each week, as well as the Aldi SpecialBuy ranges.
You can also keep track of a supermarket’s prices on its website or by downloading the app.
However, remember that prices can change day to day and some deals happening in store may not be visible online.
Likewise, some items may be more expensive depending on which store you’re visiting.
To locate your nearest store, go to the retailer’s website and use the Store Finder tool.
How to save money on your supermarket shop
THERE are plenty of ways to save on your grocery shop.
You can look out for yellow or red stickers on products, which show when they’ve been reduced.
If the food is fresh, you’ll have to eat it quickly or freeze it for another time.
Making a list should also save you money, as you’ll be less likely to make any rash purchases when you get to the supermarket.
Going own brand can be one easy way to save hundreds of pounds a year on your food bills too.
This means ditching “finest” or “luxury” products and instead going for “own” or value” type of lines.
Plenty of supermarkets run wonky veg and fruit schemes where you can get cheap prices if they’re misshapen or imperfect.
For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme, offering boxes of 5kg of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50.
If you’re on a low income and a parent, you may be able to get up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers to use at the supermarket too.
Plus, many councils offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund.
If you love Baileys but want to spend less and aren’t fussed about having the real thing, then there are plenty of dupes around.
Last year The Sun tried Bailey’s dupes from all the top supermarkets, and ranked which ones were best.
Reporter Lynsey Barber ranked Lidl Irish Cream Liqueur the highest with a nine out of 10.
This year it is selling for around £7.99 for a 1L bottle, but prices vary between stores.
Another favourite was the Aldi Ballycastle Country Cream, which costs even less at £4.99 per 70cl, so £7.13 per 1L.
The Ballycastle range also features a range of festive flavours, such as a milk chocolate clementine and a white chocolate.
These are slightly pricier at £7.49 per 70cl, but a great deal compared to Bailey’s special edition products which typically cost anywhere from £22 – and are currently unavailable to buy.

Eighties bombshell unrecognisable 39 years after hit TV show and insuring her famous legs for $1m
THIS brunette bombshell was once the most desired woman in Hollywood.
The natural beauty rose to fame donning a pair of hotpants and was given sex symbol status worldwide.
Catherine Bach was the sex symbol of Dukes of Hazzard[/caption] The siren was seen in LA sporting a casual look[/caption] The TV star once insured her legs of a million dollars[/caption] The brunette beauty was one of the biggest stars of the 70s and 80s[/caption]Former Hollywood star Catherine was seen out and about in LA looking relaxed and wearing casual clothing.
Dressed head to toe in black, the star wore her long brunette hair down and accessorised her tight top and leggings with dark shades and an over-the-shoulder black handbag.
The model rose to fame starring in the iconic role as Daisy Duke on The Dukes of Hazzard and made Catherine Bach a household name.
The actress went onto star in movies Street Justice, Driving Force, Masters of Menace, The Breakup Girl and soap opera The Young and the Restless.
She was last seen on the big screen in 2015’s flick, Book of Fire.
Speaking about wowing the casting directors at her first audition for the hit show, she said: “After I did my reading during the audition, there was total silence.
“I thought, ‘Oh no, they didn’t like what I did.’ Then everyone, we’re talking about 30 people, got up and started clapping.
“They just connected with my vision of how this part should be played. Two weeks later, I was on a plane to Georgia.”
She told CMT News in 2005 about being a bombshell: “I think what made Daisy Duke stand out is that I am a ‘sex symbol’ who never took her clothes off and never had a love scene.”
“I never did anything embarrassing. And by the way, to this day, people know that I’m not going to shock them or surprise them with some crazy thing.
“Somebody’s got to be able to carry the bottom line and have a dignified life and not be crazy. And I guess that’s just gonna be me.”
During the height of her fame, the star made headlines after insuring her legs for $1 million.
She said at the time: “You know what it is? I do things that I shouldn’t really do… I ski.
“I had a plane when I started the series, which they made me get rid of… [I do] a lot of things. And I sort of take chances. So they thought that they should insure my legs.”
Bach made her mark and posed as Daisy Duke for a poster which sold 5 million copies.
The Monk actress married David Shaw (the stepson of Angela Lansbury) in 1976.
The couple divorced in 1981 and Bach went onto marry entertainment lawyer Peter Lopez in 1990.
The couple had two daughters. Sadly, in April 2010, the 60-year-old was found shot dead in what’s thought to be a suicide.
