Old Firm’s spot-kick and red card totals since Celtic chief Michael Nicholson’s ‘penalty Rangers’ quip at last Hoops AGM

IT was one of the quotes of last year’s Celtic AGM.

Hoops chief executive Michael Nicholson was quizzed from the floor about what should happen if a “referee and VAR misses a key decision?”

30.12.2023 Celtic v Rangers: Leon Balogun sent off
Leon Balogun and John Lundstram were both sent off at Celtic Park

Quick as a flash he responded: “Penalty Rangers!”

This isn’t an exact science, of course: many factors which govern how many penalties any team are likely to concede – or be awarded.

For instance, there’s the small matter of how often the ball is in a team’s box, not to mention the diligence and discipline of the defending side.

But 12 months on, we thought it was worth revisiting how these two Glasgow rivals have fared when it comes to penalties since Nicholson made the quip.

And the news is that it’s actually the Parkhead side who have been given more penalties and conceded fewer.

Using Premiership data only, from November 22 last year – when Nicholson cracked the joke – Celtic have been given 12 penalties while Rangers have been awarded 10.

Celtic have been given two spot kicks in the current campaign while Rangers are one of just two Premiership sides who still haven’t been awarded one.

Arne Engels converted both of the Hoops penalties, one against Hearts and one against Dundee, both of which were given at Celtic Park and supported by VAR and the SFA’s KMI panel.

As for penalties conceded since Nicholson’s comments, the Hoops have conceded THREE and Rangers have conceded FIVE.

Celtic conceded two in the remainder of last season – one converted by HeartsJorge Grant in a 2-0 defeat at Tynecastle in March and another steered in by James Tavernier at Ibrox in the 3-3 Old Firm draw in April.

The only penalty they have conceded this season was away to Ross County for a handball against Liam Scales – with Ronan Hale firing in from the spot after Kasper Schmeichel moving off his line caused the kick to be retaken.

Included in Rangers’ five since Nicholson’s comments were three last season: one in the same 3-3 Old Firm game to Matt O’Riley for Connor Goldson‘s handball, and two converted by Kilmarnock‘s Danny Armstrong.

They’ve conceded two league spot kicks this season, even though the efforts of both Jamie McGrath of Aberdeen and Mykola Kucharevich of Hibs were SAVED by Jack Butland.

As for red cards, Celtic have had just ONE red card since Nicholson’s comments – and none this season – while Celtic have had FIVE.

Celtic are one of just three Premiership teams who haven’t had a player sent off this season.

In fact, they haven’t had a red card in a league match since Yang was dismissed by Don Robertson at Tynecastle in March, a match after which Brendan Rodgers said VAR official John Beaton was “probably seeing something different to everyone else”.

The Hoops ultimately failed in their appeal against the Yang red card, but Rodgers did see his initially two-match ban for his comments reduced to one.

That was one of just two league dismissals for the Hoops last year, with the other coming for Joe Hart at Livingston back in September.

How the two teams tally up since the ‘Penalty Rangers’ jibe

The independent VAR review panel ruled this week that Reo Hatate should have walked for a foul on Kilmarnock‘s Liam Donnelly which both referee and VAR thought a yellow was sufficient.

In contrast, Rangers have now seen FIVE players dismissed in league matches since Nicholson’s comments in late November ’23.

Jose Cifuentes saw red in a 3-1 win over Dundee in early December lat year, and Dujon Sterling saw red in a meeting with Aberdeen in February.

Leon Balogun in December ’23 and John Lundstram in April ’24 both saw red in league Premiership clashes at Celtic Park.

As for this season, Rangers have also had Ianis Hagi dismissed in a league clash against St Johnstone.

Meanwhile Gerrard is under pressure at Al-Ettifaq following a horror start to the season.

The Liverpool legend has kept his £15million-a-year job but has made changes to his backroom staff.

Assistant manager Dean Holden and sporting director Mark Allen both left by mutual consent.

And Beale – who worked with Gerrard in Scotland – has joined to replace Holden.

The 44-year-old was in charge for just 12 matches at Sunderland before being sacked in February.

Al-Ettifaq sit 12th out of 18 in the Saudi Pro League, losing HALF of their ten games this season.

The ex-England captain held crisis talks with Al-Ettifaq’s owners in November – but vowed to fight for his job.

He said: “On the back of recent results in my position you are always aware of disappointment from fans, I have to take that responsibility on my shoulders.

MILLIONS of people have flocked to Bluesky as an alternative to Elon Musk’s X social network.

The platform has been around since 2019 but after the US Election it blew in popularity with a number of high-profile names and celebrities jumping on board.

People have pledged to leave X in favour of Bluesky[/caption]

Bluesky is quite similar to X – formerly known as Twitter – with the ability to post, reply, and message other users.

It actually started out as a research initiative at Twitter before being spun off.

But in the rush to bag profile names, some have noticed a bizarre error on their account.

On some profiles, it says “invalid handle” below their name.

And it doesn’t appear to be a new problem either.

“Why does it say invalid handle beside your name?,” one confused user wrote.

“I never changed my handle and still get the invalid handle error lol,” another said.

“The “Invalid handle” strikes again!” a third commented.

It’s not clear why the issue happens.

Back in August 2023, Bluesky posted about “invalid handle” saying it was part of their “upgraded infrastructure” which “may affect your profile”.

But the firm also detailed a solution that should fix it.

Bluesky says you will need to re-verify to resolve the problem.

You can do this by going to Settings > Change my handle > Type in your current handle > Verify DNS Record > Update.

“The above steps should resolve your handle, but if the error persists, please file a support ticket via the “Help” button in your menu so our team can assist you,” Bluesky said.

Tera Crews and actor father Terry Crews were all smiles at the Gladiator 2 premiere[/caption]

Both Terry Crews, 56, and Tera Crews, 26, wore all-black attire for the event to promote Paul Mescal’s new flick.

Terry, known for movie including White Chicks and TV show Brooklyn Nine-Nine donned a chic black suit with matching shirt and accessorised with a chunky silver wristwatch.

Tera, who is one of the America’s Got Talent host’s five kids with Rebecca King-Crews, wore a trendy black blazer dress with a satin trim.

She pulled on thigh-high patent black boots and a butterfly-pendant necklace, leaving her raven locks in long corkscrew curls.

The pair showed their close bond as they enjoyed a cuddle on the red carpet while flashing beaming smiles.

As well as his acting career, Terry was also a former NFL player.

In 1997 Crews decided to leave the NFL and make the move out west to Los Angeles where he began his career in acting.

His first big role was alongside the musician Ice Cube in the film, Friday After Next back in 2002.

After his run on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Craig of the Creek ended in 2021, he has since gone on to prepare for his role in the TV series, Tales of the Walking Dead, scheduled to air sometime in 2022.

On February 8, 2022, he was also seen on PBS’ Finding Your Roots alongside Tony Danza.

Tera, born in 1998, has certainly enjoyed a boost courtesy of her dad’s experience in the acting world.

The beauty, who posts glam snaps of her lavish lifestyle on her Instagram page, has followed in her father’s footsteps appearing in The Family Crews, Family Brainsurge, and Terry Crews Saves Christmas.

Tera has also worked in advertising.

Earlier this year, she posed a series of bikini snaps from her recent holiday to Brazil.

She also showcased a sweet childhood image of her and Terry with the emotional caption: “I had to use this one because THIS guy took the one I was gonna use lol.

“I am so grateful to have such a giving and loving father.

“I appreciate you with all my heart. Thank you for giving me life (P.S. yes his knuckles are still that ashy to this day)(P.P.S I make that face at least once a day.)

TOUGH TIMES

Yet despite Tera’s happy family life, dad Terry has endured struggles in his marriage.

Over the years, the couple has had to overcome cheating and addiction during their marriage which they revealed in their audio memoir Stronger Together in spring 2021.

In December 2017 Terry claimed he was once sexual assaulted by talent agent Adam Venit.

The actor reported the incident to the police alleging that Venit had grabbed his crotch at an industry party at Hutchinson restaurant in February 2016.

Venit denied the claims and in March 2018 prosecutors decided not to file criminal charges against him, saying the incident falls outside the statute of limitations.

The dirty cheaters want to desperately hide their sordid romp[/caption]

Fan favourite couple Cain Dingle and Moira Barton are in serious trouble after today’s episode.

Viewers watched as Moira underwent brain surgery in the special episode – and Cain spiralled out of control with the pressure.

As Moira went under the knife, Cain lashed out at everyone around him – including the nurses caring for her.

Ordered back to the village, Cain wasted no time in downing a bottle of booze before coming face to face with Jimmy King.

Jimmy made a jibe about Belle and Cain wasn’t having it – he beat merry hell out him for questioning what happened to her.

But he wasn’t done with leaving Jimmy battered and bloody.

Time shifted to later showing Cain fresh from a sordid sex romp in the garage with his own sister-in-law Ruby Fox Miligan.

“You need to go,” Cain said to Ruby as they climbed out of the car and began to get dressed.

“I wasn’t planning on sticking around for the pillow talk,” Ruby hit back.

Cain told her: “No-one finds out about this.”

“You’re damn right they don’t,” said Ruby as she rushed out before Cain smashed up the garage in guilt.

Another flashback revealed the pair had rowed over Cain not being with Moira and Ruby struggling with her dad Anthony’s return and daughter Steph’s betrayal.

They ended up snogging and then more – risking Cain and Moira’s marriage, not to mention Ruby and Caleb’s and Cain and Caleb’s relationship.

Moira Barton's biggest Emmerdale storylines

Played by Natalie J. Robb, Moira has become one of Emmerdale's most prominent characters since her debut in 2009.

AFFAIR WITH CAIN DINGLE

In October 2011, Moira began an affair with Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), whom she had previously loathed.

At the time, she was married to first husband and childhood sweetheart John (James Thornton).

JOHN’S DEATH

In the characters’ backstory, John and Moira had been married since 1990. They shared three children: Adam, Hannah (now Matty) and Holly.

While John struggled to forgive Moira’s infidelity, he also realised he couldn’t live without her.

Ultimately, the character of John was written out by having a car accident and fatal cardiac arrest.

Afterwards, Moira and Cain began a relationship and later married.

ADAM’S PATERNITY

It transpired that Cain was not the first man that Moira had an affair with.

She previously slept with John’s brother James (Bill Ward) – with the revelation that he is her son Adam’s biological father.

MURDER OF EMMA BARTON

James’ estranged wife Emma (Gillian Kearney) was introduced as a soap villain, reuniting with her clan after two decades.

In October 2017, Emma was killed off in a who-dunnit storyline after being pushed off a viaduct.

She reappeared one last time in December 2017 for a flashback, where her killer was revealed to be archenemy Moira.

Later Cain rushed to the hospital in time for Moira to come round but managed to keep the secret intact.

But how long will it remain that way?
