Dad wins £17,000 after dentist’s needle gets stuck in his jaw – leaving him ‘looking like the Elephant Man’

A DAD received a £17,000 settlement after a dentist’s needle snapped off in his jaw – leaving his looking like “the Elephant Man” and with permanent nerve damage.

Joe Woollen, 41, a HGV driver and father-of-six from Medway, Kent, had avoided seeing a dentist since the age of 13 as he is “terrified of needles”.

But after experiencing “unbearable toothache”, he booked an appointment at The Vale Dental Clinic in London in 2021.

After attending an appointment with Dr Rajarajeshwari Krishnamurthy at the Golders Green practice, he said he was advised that the tooth would need to be removed at the end of July that year.

On the day of the tooth extraction, several anaesthesia injections were administered to numb his mouth, followed by a block injection.

Joe said he noticed the dentist and her assistant “fumbling around” as they could not find the needle from the end of the syringe.

He said an X-ray at hospital the next day showed the 2.1cm needle was entirely lodged in the soft tissue at the back of his mouth.

The dad needed an operation under general anaesthetic to remove the needle and then have the tooth extracted.

Joe said he was left with severe facial swelling which made him look “like the Elephant Man” and it has caused permanent nerve damage – meaning he dribbles, cannot feel the bottom right side of his face and often bites into his cheek and lip without realising.

Specialist dental negligence solicitors, the Dental Law Partnership, took on the case, which was successfully settled in July 2024 when Joe was paid £17,000 in an out-of-court settlement – although the dentist involved did not admit liability.

Joe said: “I didn’t go to the dentist from the age of 13 because I didn’t like needles, and when I finally did, that happened.

“Afterwards I was having nightmares for months, literally waking up, sweating and shouting – my missus and kids were scared.

“I just kept waking up thinking I was swallowing needles, it was horrible.

“I’m never going back [to the dentist] – I’m done, I’m out.”

In 2021, Joe, who has six children and lives with his 31-year-old wife, Becky, a swimming teacher, said he started experiencing agonising toothache which kept him awake for two days – and painkillers did “nothing” to alleviate his symptoms.

He said he had not visited the dentist for more than two decades due to his fear of needles, but after running out of options, he knew he needed to book an appointment.

“I’m terrified of needles … and rightly so,” Joe said.

“I just had unbearable toothache, I was awake for two days, and at midnight on a random Thursday or something, I just booked [an appointment].”

Joe attended an appointment with Dr Krishnamurthy at The Vale Dental Clinic, Golders Green, London, for a routine tooth extraction after being given a temporary filling due to toothache.

He said he was advised that the tooth would need to be removed at the end of July 2021 – but he could not believe what happened during the extraction.

They couldn’t find the needle and they were reaching around in my mouth like a vet was trying to help a cow give birth

Joe Woollen

“[The dentist] gave me a couple of injections and then she started trying to pull [the tooth] out, but I could still feel all the pain, so they gave me a load of injections,” Joe explained.

“It still wasn’t working and then she gave me something called a block anaesthetic injection, and [it felt like] she pushed this needle into the back of my head as hard as she could. It was horrible.

“When she pulled the syringe out, she put it on the side and she said, ‘Okay, we’ll go outside for 20 minutes and let it take hold’, so I went outside for 20 minutes.”

When returning to the dental room, Joe said he found the dentist and the assistant looking around the room as they had realised the needle was missing from the syringe used to administer his anaesthetic.

He continued: “She pulled the tray out and was fumbling around and she was talking to her assistant.

“They couldn’t find the end of the syringe, the needle, and then they were reaching around in my mouth … like a vet was trying to help a cow give birth – that’s how it felt.

“They had pushed it so far in it had snapped off, and she just sent me home and told me she was going to refer me to an oral surgeon in case it [the needle] was still in my head.”

Unbelievable

Joe said he received a call the next morning, telling him to visit A&E immediately and, after arriving at Queen Victoria Hospital in Crawley, he had an X-ray.

He said the surgeon at the hospital and other staff were in “complete disbelief” looking at the results, which showed the 2.1cm needle was entirely lodged in the soft tissue of his gum on the right side.

“The hospital staff couldn’t believe it; they were literally queuing to look at this X-ray,” Joe said.

“They were laughing because they’d never seen anything like it. The surgeon said, ‘I can’t believe this is real’.

“But when the surgeon finally called me in, he explained that because there was a foreign object in my head, they were worried about sepsis.”

I have lost all feeling in my lower jaw and I dribble now. I bite through my cheek so my mouth’s bleeding and I don’t even notice because I can’t even feel it

Joe Woollen

Joe later underwent an operation under general anaesthetic to remove the needle, which he said involved making more than 100 small incisions in his gum to “try to find [the needle]”, and then had the original tooth extracted.

He said this led to severe facial swelling and he has been left with permanent nerve damage.

“My whole throat and side of my head was swollen up – I looked like the Elephant Man,” he said.

“I have lost all feeling in my lower jaw… and I dribble now. I bite through my cheek so my mouth’s bleeding and I don’t even notice because I can’t even feel it.

“It has knocked my self-confidence massively.”

Moving on

Joe said he was advised by the hospital surgeon who removed the needle to contact the Dental Law Partnership in August 2021, and it took on the case soon after.

The Dental Law Partnership said analysis of Joe’s records revealed that had the dentist involved used reasonable care with the local anaesthetic injection procedure, the incident could have been avoided.

Moreover, the firm said she should have recommended immediate admission to A&E rather than allowing Joe to wait until the next day for further advice, which could have reduced the severity of his issues.

Joe said he is pleased with the settlement, which will most likely go towards family holidays and this year’s Christmas presents for his children.

Although Joe is frustrated the dentist involved did not admit liability, he said he is “happy with the decision” and wants to “move on as quickly as possible”.

How to overcome your phobias

Everyone has fears.

Some of them are very common, like spiders, heights, needles, or small spaces but others might be unique to you.

Some people find their fears interfere in their day-to-day lives, stopping them from doing certain activities to avoid the thing that frightens them.

Here are ways to help you cope with your day-to-day fears and anxieties:

  1. Try and get away from what’s upsetting you and take time out to physically calm down
  2. Don’t fight the sweaty palms and fast heartbeat – instead feel the fear and breath slowly and deeply, with the aim of getting your mind used to coping with panic
  3. Gradually expose yourself to your fear can help you maintain control and overcome it – it might not be as scary as you thought
  4. Remember that your body’s response to fear is normal as it’s designed to protect you from danger – it’s not harmful
  5. Challenge unhelpful thoughts to show yourself there isn’t anything to worry about
  6. Be less critical of yourself and don’t try to be perfect
  7. Take a moment to close your eyes and imagine a place of safety and calm
  8. Sharing your fears can make them less scary so try talking to someone about what you’re feeling
  9. Reward yourself when you achieve something despite being afraid

You may decide to get professional help and advice to find out about treatment options for phobias.

Most phobias are treatable, but no single treatment is guaranteed to work for all phobias. In some cases, a combination of different treatments may be recommended.

The main treatment types are:

  • Self-help techniques
  • Talking treatments
  • Medication

You can refer yourself directly to an NHS talking therapies service without a referral from a GP.

He added: “I’m just praying to God that I don’t have to have any more work done.”

In response, Dr Krishnamurthy said in a statement: “I would like to make it clear that I do not agree with the facts as conveyed by the Dental Law Partnership, but I cannot provide details of this patient’s treatment and management because of my professional duty to protect the confidentiality of my patients.

“This claim was resolved by way of an out-of-court settlement, with no admission of liability on my part.

“I take pride in providing the highest standards of treatment and care to all my patients, and I have only ever done my best for this patient.”

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate gets massive free upgrade and fans can play it like never before

a man in a top hat stands in front of a crowd of people

UBISOFT has released a surprise upgrade for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate on current-gen consoles, and it’s completely free.

The stealth adventure game set in Victorian London will now run smoothly and with better image quality on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate was fairly well received, but the AC Fatigue had really set in
Ubisoft

Fans of the seriers can jump back and relive Jacob and Evie Frye’s story at smooth 60fps and 4K resolution.

PS5 and Xbox Series X will have both the higher frame rate and resolution unlocked with the free patch.

The budget Xbox Series S console will offer a maximum of 1080p for Syndicate, again at 60fps after the update.

If you have automatic updates enabled and the game installed on your console, you likely won’t have to worry about updating manually.

The Assassin’s Creed Syndicate 60fps update download size is 31.8 GB for Xbox consoles, and a tiny 0.75 GB if you have a PS5.

The game first launched back in 2015, after the critically panned Assassin’s Creed Unity, so many players may have overlooked it.

Sitting at a favourable 76 rating on review aggregator Metacritic, Syndicate has been praised for it’s beautiful recreation of Victorian London.

It is seen as a return to form for the series after a couple of missteps that brought about players’ fatigue with the franchise.

Syndicate was also at a turning point for the series, just before the Assassin’s Creed Origins soft reboot that ushered in the more modern era of AC games we know today.

Players can already download the upgraded game and experience Syndicate like never before.

It’s the perfect time to revisit one of the better entries in the series, as the next game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has been delayed to February 2025.

For more on the series, check out how an Assassin’s Creed nod made it to the Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony this summer.

I was quoted £1.5k to have my staircase transformed – I did it myself for just £160 using Temu & Dunelm buys

A SAVVY woman has shared how she transformed her staircase without professionals after being quoted £1,500 to get the job done.

Nikita Keeler took to social media to show off the transformation which cost her and her husband just £160 to do themselves.

facebook/diyonabudgetofficial/
Now it looked much more modern and expensive – and it cost them just £160[/caption]

Sharing images of the DIY task, she said: “After getting charged £1500 just to do the stairs (I) got the runner from Dunelm for only £160.

“Instead of paying for the top landing carpet, sanded the original floor & finally finished.

“Even though we nearly got divorced by the end of sanding & painting every floorboard.”

Nikita showed what the stairs in her home looked like prior to the transformation which was kitted with black banisters, a fuzzy black carpet, and bright red walls.

But it now looked much more modern and luxurious thanks to her money-saving task.

She and her husband stripped the carpet back and sanded down each floorboard and banister to start.

Nikita swapped out the black paint for a glossy white colour and then added a Herringbone Border Runner from Dunelm to the centre of the stairs.

In total, she spent £160 on the runners – which cost £65 each.

She attached one to the top hallway and the rest on the stairs – using metal rods to keep it down.

She revealed she simply used furniture glue to fix the runner to the stairs.

The final touch consisted of adding their wedding photos to the top of the hallway and adding some gold bar lights from Temu to create ambiance.

The post shared to the Facebook group, DIY on a budget official, has since gone viral with over 1.6k likes and hundreds of comments.

People couldn’t believe how well the DIY job turned out.

One person wrote: “Love it, it’s beautiful.”

I quit my job and remortgaged my home to make UK’s own Lapland – people said it was a midlife crisis but biz is booming

LOOKING at their four young sons meeting Father Christmas in the early Noughties, Alison and Mike Battle wanted to bring even more festive magic into their lives.

But with a trip to Lapland easily costing over £6,000 for their family and there being no similar alternative in the UK, they were at a loss.

“We were very frustrated that when our boys were little 20-odd years ago, we couldn’t find anywhere that matched this moment of importance,” Alison says.

“Somewhere you could really revel in instant belief as a child, but also as a parent.

“Christmas is the most joyous time in parenting.

“So, we gave up our professional jobs 17 years ago and we set about creating the dream of Christmas.”

After quitting her job as an infant school teacher, Alison and Mike then remortgaged their home for a cash lump sum to dedicate to their dream of creating the UK’s answer to Lapland.

Lapland stretches across northern Finland and is roughly a three-and-a-half-hour flight from London.

It is hailed as the home of Santa Claus and on millions of Britons’ travel bucket lists for a magical, festive experience straight out of a fairy tale.

Picture snow-covered forests, charming log cabins and more reindeer than people.

But it’s an expensive trip, and certainly not one parents could afford in the financial crash of 2008 and now in the cost of living crisis.

Alison and Mike wanted families to be able to experience Christmas magic for a fraction of the price

The couple appeared on ITV’s This Morning to share how they brought Lapland UK to life.

“When we first came up with the concept, we were embarrassed to tell people about it,” Alison tells.

“It just seemed so wacky.

“We were professional people in our Forties with four sons.

How to save money on Christmas shopping

Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how you can save money on your Christmas shopping.

Limit the amount of presents – buying presents for all your family and friends can cost a bomb.

Instead, why not organise a Secret Santa between your inner circles so you’re not having to buy multiple presents.

Plan ahead – if you’ve got the stamina and budget, it’s worth buying your Christmas presents for the following year in the January sales.

Make sure you shop around for the best deals by using price comparison sites so you’re not forking out more than you should though.

Buy in Boxing Day sales – some retailers start their main Christmas sales early so you can actually snap up a bargain before December 25.

Delivery may cost you a bit more, but it can be worth it if the savings are decent.

Shop via outlet stores – you can save loads of money shopping via outlet stores like Amazon Warehouse or Office Offcuts.

They work by selling returned or slightly damaged products at a discounted rate, but usually any wear and tear is minor.

“Passion and values were powering us.

“People thought that we’d had a bit of a midlife crisis.”

Mike adds: “I used to wonder if I’d gone mad and didn’t realise.

“We had a really big vision of creating a really magical and extraordinary space that is really believable.”

People thought that we’d had a bit of a midlife crisis

Alison Battle

To ensure the experience felt authentic, they called in a team of Hollywood set designers and West End production experts to craft the extraordinary, enchanting world that we now know as Lapland UK.

The setting was designed to let families immerse themselves in the fleeting magic of their children’s belief in Father Christmas.

“Christmas time is a time of awe and belief for a child,” Alison says.

They’ve welcomed over one million visitors in 17 years, including celebrities like Elton John and Holly Willoughby.

Lapland UK can be found in the heart of Swinley Forest, Bracknell and is nearly fully sold out for 2024.

On arrival guests are presented with their own ‘Elf Passport’ to give them permission to travel along the elven pathways and through a magical door.

They also get the chance to convert money into ‘Jingle’ currency, which they are able to spend at the park.

In addition to all of that, guests get to meet huskies and reindeer before the children are treated to an audience with the big man himself, Father Christmas.

There is also an ice skating rink, cafes, a post office and sweet shop, while further festive treats can be found in Pumpernickel’s restaurant.

The whole tour takes around four hours.

Christmas Fashion Tips from an Expert

CLEMMIE Fieldsend, Fashion Editor at Fabulous, has shared her top tips for looking fabulous this Christmas.

AVOID: Christmas jumpers
No longer a novelty gag, they’re now gone back to being naff and have no place at a festive party.
By all means, go all in for Christmas Jumper Day for Save The Children, but never wear it before or after that day.

WEAR: Burgundy
You can’t escape burgundy at this time of year and it’s a luxury, deep and rich colour that is a welcome break from Santa-red at Christmas.
Opt for silky textures or velvet for extra style points.

AVOID: PJs
The trend of feather trimmed co-ords has had its day and is so dated.
Don’t pull out your hair plucked pair this year, and don’t get a new set, instead still go for the satin two-piece but just steer clear of the plumes.

WEAR: Sequin Dress
Try to switch up sequins slightly by wearing them with a different texture or colour, eg a sequin skirt with a sleek knit.
But when you’re really stuck on what to wear reach for the sequins, it is Christmas after all.

AVOID: Sequin blazer
Nothing worse than showing up to a festive do looking like the hired entertainment.
Leave the sequin blazer to magicians and Strictly judges, instead always reach for a classic tux style or velvet.

WEAR: Bling trousers
Last party season embellished jeans with diamante bling had a moment, and this year they’re going to be as much of a hit.
If you don’t want gemstones pinging off wherever you go then try metallic, PU trousers.
