John Swinney blasted over ‘absurd’ claim elderly to blame for NHS crisis
JOHN Swinney was today accused of an “absurd” bid to blame our NHS crisis on old people.
The First Minister pointed to Scotland’s rising elderly population and said hospitals were admitting patients who have become sicker due to longer waiting times caused by Covid.
First Minister John Swinney was blasted by rivals for his recent claims[/caption]Scottish Labour health spokeswoman Jackie Baillie hit out: “Our ageing population is no secret.
“John Swinney has had just shy of 18 years to see this challenge coming.
“And while he’s right that patients waiting longer will turn up with more complex conditions, his government has been in charge of waiting times since 2007. It’s his fault.”
Ms Baillie’s blast came after the First Minister was asked why our NHS is taking longer than England to recover from the pandemic.
He replied: “People are presenting in the health service with more complexity and frailty because of the ageing population.
“And because people are waiting longer, sometimes the level of acuity is more severe.
The SNP have had years to get on the front foot with population change but sat on their hands
Alex Cole-Hamilton
“That presents a greater challenge.”
Scottish Lib Dems leader Alex Cole-Hamilton said his comments “don’t hold water”.
He added: “The SNP have had years to get on the front foot with population change but sat on their hands.
“Blaming waits on waits is absurd.”
Scottish Tory health spokesman Dr Sandesh Gulhane weighed in: “The public are sick and tired of John Swinney’s excuses on the permanent crisis the SNP have created in Scotland’s NHS.
“The buck stops with his party.”
The Nats leader yesterday refused to set out a target to reduce waiting times — just days after he vowed to “fix” the NHS before the Holyrood election in 2026.
Asked to be specific on sorting delays affecting almost 900,000 Scots, he said: “We’re working to get them down as much as we possibly can.
“I’ve set out the commitments we have given.”
Last year an Institute for Fiscal Studies report said Scotland’s NHS was “lagging behind” England’s in its recovery from Covid-19.
Blair’s Labour said education was its biggest priority… current government is focused on teaching political propaganda
WHEN Tony Blair was asked what his priorities were for government back in 1997, he was very clear: “Education, education, education,” is what he replied.
Now, OK — that was a bit misleading. It would have been more accurate if he had said, “Education, illegally invading a country and causing a civil war. And letting millions of immigrants into the country.”
Blair’s Labour said education was its biggest priority… current government is focused on teaching political propaganda[/caption]But that didn’t have quite the same ring to it.
In fairness to Blair’s New Labour government, they did improve schooling quite dramatically in London.
Those improvements never quite reached beyond the M25, but still, it was a good start.
Now Labour is back in power. And under the Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, they plan to “shake up” the curriculum.
Well, OK. But what does this mean, exactly? Start getting tough with the kids who don’t turn up? Raising the standards so that exams are a little more testing? Making sure every kid is familiar with the greatest bits of English Literature.
And is familiar with the important parts of our history? Nope.
Exactly the reverse.
Ms Phillipson has surrounded herself with a blob of numpties from trades unions, universities and civil servants. And they are advising her to make the curriculum “more relevant”.
They want it “decolonised”, for a start. This is because they are self-hating liberals who cannot bear the country in which they live. They are ashamed of our history, rather than proud of it.
And so you can bet your bottom dollar that the kids will be told more about slavery and how wicked the Brits are than they can possibly take in.
But “decolonising” and “making more relevant” stands for something else, too. These advisers think that the true greats of English Literature no longer have anything to say to the kids of today.
So let’s junk Shakespeare, cos the Bard of Avon is a bit too difficult for da kidz to understand. And while we’re on it, let’s forget about Tennyson and Keats and Eliot and Shaw. Because aside from anything else, they were all racists.
The idiots have also told Phillipson that the children must learn to appreciate the enormous benefits of living in a multicultural country.
That’s not education, that’s political propaganda. The children will be indoctrinated. Just as they have been told of late that there are more than two genders. (There are not.)
In fairness to Blair’s New Labour government, they did improve schooling quite dramatically in London[/caption]It is ironic that all this is happening just as the rest of the world is running away as fast as it can from the progressive teaching methods that have ruined the educations for so many children.
And the truth is, the more diverse a society — and ours is very diverse today, like it or not — the more you need to teach kids the basics of British history and British writing, and to be proud of that enormous legacy.
But Bridget seems determined to ignore all that.
She has already infuriated many parents by putting VAT on school fees. She is the enemy of aspiration.
Britain’s best schools — the ones that get the best results — are our free schools. Places such as the Michaela Community School in London.
All of these schools show the pupils tough love. The kids are expected to be polite and obedient. And to have a working knowledge of the greats of literature.
Will Phillipson be going to war against the heads of these institutions? It looks as if she might. Instead of improving education, she will be dragging every pupil down to the lowest level.
And it will be the working-class kids who are the worst affected, because the middle classes can still afford to get the hell out of the system.
Don’t do it, Bridget. Call the bluff of the trade unionists. And make our schools great again.
PM HAS TO BE GRILLED
THE public is tiring of Sir Keir Starmer very quickly indeed.
We don’t like being told that when we disagree with him we’re “climbing on a far right bandwagon”. It’s an insulting and stupid riposte.
People want a public inquiry into how so many hundreds and hundreds of young white girls were raped – and sometimes killed – by Asian so-called grooming gangs. (Raping gangs would be a more accurate name).
Why was so little done? There are serious questions for Starmer to answer – seeing as he was the Director of Public Prosecutions for the majority of the time in question.
But a public inquiry would have its limits set by the Government and wouldn’t tell us much we didn’t know.
We need some enterprising young journos to poke around in the CPS and find out the truth. As for the rest of it – a case of people being terrified of being called racist. They turned a blind eye because the offenders were mostly Muslim.
It is a scandal, of course. And it should remind us that “political correctness” can be LETHAL.
I’m putting life on ice with Squid Game
We’ve been snowed in for the last four days – so it’s time to binge watch Squid Game and dream of summer[/caption]WE’VE been snowed in for the last four days.
Drifts so large we can’t open the doors. Dog doesn’t want to go out anyway, so it’s no great loss.
Thing is, we moan all year about how we never get snow any more and how we all wanted a white Christmas. And then it snows and we moan like buggery because we can’t get out to buy the usual tat from the shops.
Anyway, we’re OK.
There’s plenty of stuff in the freezer and lots of wine.
And we can binge watch Squid Game and dream of summer.
A DON DEAL?
I WONDER if Greenland will become the 51st state of the USA?
Donald Trump clearly isn’t very impressed with the way Denmark is running the place.
And he’s offered to buy it. While Greenland is a vast, frozen, expanse full of polar bear poo and a handful of eskimos, it’s strategically very important.
And geographically it is part of North America. Trump’s number one concern is to make his country more secure. And Greenland is right next door.
Don’t forget, the USA bought Alaska off the Russkies in the 19th century.
I bet Putin wishes that hadn’t happened. Trump also has his eyes on the Panama Canal.
He says it is being run by the Chinese. It’s going to be an interesting few years, isn’t it?

Mark Zuckerberg is getting rid of the fact-checkers at Facebook to rid the institution of ‘bias’[/caption]THE counter revolution is under way at Facebook!
Boss Mark Zuckerberg has already binned Nick Clegg as president of global affairs. Getting shot of Clegg is always a good thing to do.
Now he’s getting rid of the fact-checkers. These are the people who many felt objected to stuff posted by anyone more right wing than themselves. They ended up making Facebook a deeply biased institution.
On several occasions they prevented people from posting about the crimes committed by Joe Biden’s awful, criminal son, Hunter.
Now Zuckerberg has seen the error of his ways perhaps the BBC will follow suit. Its own “Verify” team is deeply biased.

It read: “The Santa Anita Park Fire Marshall, in coordination with local authorities, reports there is no direct threat to Santa Anita Park from the wildfires to the north.
“The track continues to remain outside the voluntary evacuation zone. The winds are blowing from east to west, embers and smoke are being pushed into the mountains and away from Santa Anita Park.
“The fire’s progress is being consistently monitored and any change will be updated accordingly.”
Meanwhile, riders at the track received a message advising them to evacuate their horses.
It said: “While Santa Anita is not in any imminent danger, if you would like to voluntarily evacuate your horses, Santi Anita Park will pay for them to be relocated. Please contact the racing office for details.
“If you have been evacuated from your homes, you are welcome to come to the Santa Anita grandstand with food and beverage provided.”
Trainer Jay Nehf added: “There’s a lot of smoke but the horses are safe. The track is closed.
“They were expecting more high winds and the smoke’s a big issue. But the fires seem to be slowing down.”

One of Kelyan’s friends described him as someone who would “always be there for you” at a vigil held after the 14-year-old was stabbed to death.
The teenage boy told those gathered at St Mary Magdalene Church in Woolwich: “He was a fun guy. He had a pure heart. He would always be there for you.”
The friend then joked about Kelyan eating “bare food”.
