THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES
DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.
Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.
During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.
Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.
The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.
“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.
“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”
The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.
They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.
“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”
Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.
I’m A Celeb’s Maura Higgins ‘100% walking’ as her campmates spot clue she’ll quit within days
I’ M A Celebrity’s campmates are convinced Maura Higgins is ‘100% walking’ – after spotting a clue that she’ll quit.
Love Island star Maura and Reverend Richard Coles are this year’s jungle late arrivals.
GK Barry made a bold prediction to her fellow celebrities[/caption] Richard and Maura deceived the main camp at the latest Bushtucker Trial[/caption] This year’s late arrivals have been secretly enjoying luxuries and advantages[/caption]The pair are living in small, unsanitary “Junkyard” camp – although it comes with a major twist.
As the main camp faced another rainy morning, internet personality GK Barry made a major prediction.
She said: “But do you know what, poor Maura and Richard.
“If they have to stay down there another night, Maura’s walking.
“Maura’s 100% walking.”
As viewers know, Maura and Richard have secretly been enjoying a life of luxury.
The other celebs believe the pair have been living in squalor – and lacking basic requirements.
If Maura and Richard successfully maintain the lie, everyone will enjoy a “junk food buffet.”
Meanwhile, Friday’s episode saw the Junkyard secret take a brand new direction.
Dean McCullough and Danny Jones took on the latest trial, “High Street Of Horrors.”
Covering themselves in feathers, Maura and Richard had to pretend they’d miserably failed – winning no stars for their smaller camp.
After Dean and Danny’s eight-star winning effort, they chose Dean to join them in the Junkyard.
Now in on the secret, he enjoyed the secret luxuries and advantage of the other camp.
The jig may soon be up, however, as Coleen Rooney appears to have sussed out the ruse.
Returning from a visit to the Junkyard, she confided her suspicions to the others.
Coleen revealed she thought the other trio looked “more content” than their dire circumstances suggested.
I'm A Celebrity 2024
i'm A Celebrity is back for its 24th series, with a batch of famous faces living in the Aussie jungle. The Sun's Jake Penkethman takes a look at the stars on the show this year..
Coleen Rooney – Arguably the most famous name in the camp, the leading WAG, known for her marriage to Wayne Rooney, has made a grand return to TV as she looks to put the Wagatha Christie scandal behind her. The Sun revealed the mum-of-four had bagged an eye-watering deal worth over £1.5million to be on the show this year making her the highest-paid contestant ever.
Tulisa – The popstar and former X Factor judge has made her triumphant TV comeback by signing up to this year’s I’m A Celeb after shunning TV shows for many years. Known for being a member of the trio, N-Dubz, Tulisa became a household name back in 2011 when she signed on to replace Cheryl on ITV show The X Factor in a multi-million pound deal.
Alan Halsall – The actor, known for playing the long-running role of Tyrone Dobbs on ITV soap opera Coronation Street, was originally signed up to head Down Under last year but an operation threw his scheduled appearance off-course. Now he has become the latest Corrie star to win over both the viewers and his fellow celebrities.
Melvin Odoom – The Radio DJ has become a regular face on TV screens after rising to fame with presenting roles on Kiss FM, BBC Radio 1 and 4Music. Melvin has already been for a spin on the Strictly dancefloor and co-hosted The Xtra Factor with Rochelle Humes in 2015 but now he is facing up to his biggest challenge yet – the Aussie jungle.
GK Barry – The UK’s biggest social media personality, GK, whose real name is Grace Keeling, has transformed her TikTok stardom into a lucrative career. Aside from her popular social media channels, she hosts the weekly podcast, Saving Grace, and regularly appears on ITV talk show, Loose Women. She has even gone on to endorse popular brands such as PrettyLittleThing, KFC and Ann Summers.
Dean McCullough – A rising star amongst this year’s bunch of celebs, Dean first achieved notability through his radio appearances on Gaydio and BBC Radio 1. He was chosen to join the BBC station permanently in 2021 and has featured prominently ever since. He has enjoyed a crossover to ITV over the past year thanks to his guest slots on Big Brother spin-off show, Late & Live.
Oti Mabuse – The pro dancer has signed up to her latest TV show after making her way through the biggest programmes on the box. She originally found fame on Strictly Come Dancing but has since branched out into the world of TV judging with appearances on former BBC show The Greatest Dancer as well as her current role on ITV’s Dancing On Ice.
Danny Jones – The McFly star was drafted into the programme last minute as a replacement for Tommy Fury. Danny is the second member of McFly to enter the jungle, after Dougie Poynter won the show in 2011. He is also considered a rising star on ITV as he’s now one of the mentors on their Saturday night talent show, The Voice, along with bandmate Tom Fletcher.
Jane Moore – The Loose Women star and The Sun columnist is braving the creepy crawlies this year. The star is ready for a new challenge – having recently split from her husband. It will be Jane’s first foray into reality TV with the telly favourite having always said no to reality shows in the past.
Barry McGuigan – Former pro boxer Barry is the latest fighting champ to head Down Under following in the footsteps of Tony Bellew and Amir Khan. It comes after a tough few years for Irish star Barry, who lost his daughter Danika to bowel cancer. He told The Late Late Show in 2021: “She was such an intrinsic part of the family that every day we ache.”
Maura Higgins – The Irish TV beauty first found fame on Love Island where she found a brief connection with dancer Curtis Pritchard. Since then, she has competed on Dancing On Ice as well as hosting the Irish version of the beauty contest, Glow Up. Since last year, she has been working on building up her career in the US by being the social media correspondent and host of Aftersun to accompany Love Island USA. She even guest hosted an episode of the spin-off, Love Island Games, in place of Maya Jama last year.
Rev. Richard Coles – Former BBC radio host the Rev Richard Coles is a late arrival on I’m A Celebrity, and he’s ready to spill the beans on his former employer. The former Communards and Strictly star, said the BBC did not know its a**e from its elbow last year. An insider said: “Rev Coles will have a variety of tales to tell from his wild days as a pop star in the Eighties, through to performing on Strictly and his later life as a man of the cloth.”
Soon after, other campmates chimed in with their own observations.
McFly’s Danny Jones deduced the duo had faked doing his and Dean’s trial.
Meanwhile, Melvin Odoom realised they’d only pretended do a disgusting challenge with him.
I’m A Celebrity airs on ITV1 and ITVX.

Rangers vs Dundee United: Clement loses another key star after latest injury setback – latest team news
RANGERS return to Premiership action this weekend after a two week absence due to the international break.
But Philippe Clement‘s will be without one star player for the Ibrox clash after Neraysho Kasanwirjo became the latest player to be struck down with injury while on duty for his nation.
Philippe Clement’s men return to Ibrox this weekend[/caption] They face Jim Goodwin’s side in Govan[/caption]The full-back was forced off against England while playing for the Netherlands U21s and now faces a lengthy wait on the sidelines.
Clement fears the loanee will be out for a considerable amount of time but the club will learn the full extent of the injury after they hear back from a specialist this weekend.
They know he suffered a knee ligament damage which will require surgery.
But with Kasanwirjo out, Clement may look to James Tavernier to start against Dundee United.
The skipper has been in and out of the Gers team with Clement swapping between him, Kasanwirjo and Dujon Sterling.
Tavernier’s future at Ibrox looks rather bleak at the moment so it would be very telling if the Belgian opts for Sterling instead of him this weekend – especially with Kasanwirjo sidelined.
That’s perhaps Clement’s biggest decision to make at Ibrox.

More than two million vapers could switch BACK to smoking cigarettes due to Government’s looming crackdown, poll shows
MORE than two million vapers could switch back to smoking cigarettes because of the Government’s looming crackdown, polling shows.
Disposable e-cigs are being banned from next June, and ministers are also restricting flavours to make them less appealing to kids.
But there are increasing fears this could backfire into previous smokers relapsing, with the Government’s own impact assessment admitting this might happen.
Now fresh polling by Opinium for Elfbar reveals 41 per cent of respondents would switch back to smoking tobacco if single-use vapes and their preferred flavours were banned.
That equates to around 2.3million adult vapers, according to the research.
Some 38 per cent said they would try to continue purchasing disposable vapes or banned flavours “from whichever channels are available”.
Critics have warned of a possible black market boom in illegal vapes.
It is not year clear which flavours would fall foul of the Government’s crackdown, but it is expected to include those that appeal directly to children, like cola and candy floss.
The Opinium survey found fruity flavours were by far the most popular, with 37 per cent smoking them, followed by tobacco flavour on 23 per cent.
Ministers insist action is needed to stop the surge in underage vaping.
The Tobacco and Vapes Bill will give them powers to curb such flavours, as well well as empower cops to hand out on-the-spot fines for suppliers caught selling to kids.
