They’ve been close for years, especially after working together on The Music Man Broadway show. Recently, they were spotted holding hands and laughing over dinner in Santa Monica, and now fans are seriously starting to question if there’s love in the air.

With all the subtle moments and cozy outings, it’s easy to see why people are starting to think there might be more to this pairing than meets the eye. Let’s break it down—what we know about their past and why these two peas in a pod might actually make sense!

Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster were papped having dinner together in Santa Monica on January 6, 2025. And to say the least, this was no ordinary dinner date. The two were not only chatting and laughing like they’d been friends for ages, but they were also holding hands!

Now, that’s not something you do with just a friend, right? This public outing seems to confirm what many had already presumed—that there may be something more than a professional relationship between the two.

It’s not the first time Jackman and Foster have been spotted together, but this is certainly the most public confirmation of their closeness. Jackman, 56, dressed casually in a grey shirt, dark jacket, and white jeans, while Foster, 49, looked seamlessly chic in a tan trench coat over a greenish olive dress.

Their body language spoke volumes—they were relaxed and enjoying each other’s company. If that’s not enough, sources close to US Weekly confirmed the relationship, saying:

A lot of people on Broadway knew, and we kept it quiet because both of them are so nice and great people. Everyone respected their privacy. [They] don’t live together because of their kids. Everyone [there] has known about this for a long time.

Just a couple of days earlier, Jackman was seen in the audience of Foster’s Broadway production of Once Upon a Mattress in Los Angeles, where he was backing her.

The Wolverine actor was joined by comedy legend Carol Burnett, who played the same role Foster is currently playing in the 1959 original production of the show. Could this be Jackman’s way of showing not only his support but his affection toward Foster as well?

If it walks like a couple and talks like a couple, well… you know the rest. What makes their relationship even more enigmatic is their long history together. Jackman and Foster first met in 2008, when Foster was starring in Shrek on Broadway. The actor attended the show, and he even posed for a photo backstage with her and the cast.

That was the beginning of their friendship, but who would’ve guessed that 17 years later, they’d be witnessed holding hands and sharing laughs in public? It’s one of those connections that has been building quietly behind the scenes, and now it looks like it’s moving in the glare of publicity.

Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster have always spoken highly of each other

Before the hand-holding and dinner dates, there’s been a lot of admiration between the two. They have spoken highly of each other in interviews, making it clear that their relationship (whether romantic or not) was built on shared regard and veneration.

When they starred together in the 2022 Broadway revival of The Music Man, both Jackman and Foster couldn’t stop applauding each other in interviews. Speaking to PEOPLE during a June 2024 chat at the Drama Desk Awards, Foster shared:

He’s one of the greatest guys ever, an incredible costar.

Foster also admitted in an interview with Vogue in 2022 that she and Jackman became close friends during their year-long run in The Music Man. The actress said:

He disarms everyone, and he doesn’t make anything about him. He’s now become one of my best friends, which was a surprise.

The friendship between Jackman and Foster continued to grow, and Foster even revealed that they spent Memorial Day weekend together in 2022, hanging out with each other’s families.

But Jackman wasn’t shy about his admiration either. The English star spoke about how impressed he was by Foster’s immense talent, jokingly admitting that he was intimidated by her resume. Check out Jackman’s, who is himself a Tony Award winner, quote (when he appeared Late Night With Seth Meyers alongside Foster):

This is a six-time Tony nominee, two-time winner. Like, I saw her do Thoroughly Modern Millie when you were like 4 years old. But I’ve watched everything she’s done. It’s amazing.

Their compliments of each other are proof that their connection goes beyond the stage. And that’s how they have grown closer in a way that extends past just being colleagues and friends.

Both Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster have been married to others before

Before you start envisioning Jackman and Foster strolling down the aisle, there’s a crucial detail to consider: both have previously entered into matrimony.

In fact, both are fresh off long-term relationships that ended in 2023. In September 2023, Jackman and his wife of 27 years, Deborra-lee Furness, announced their separation. The two met while working on the Australian TV show Correlli back in 1995 and married the following year.

They share two adopted children, Oscar and Ava, and have been one of those rare Hollywood couples who managed to keep their relationship relatively private.

Unfortunately, even the longest relationships can hit bumps in the road, and the couple decided to part ways in the fall of 2023. According to Vanity Fair, their statement at the time said they were “separating to pursue individual growth.”

Foster, too, went through a major life change in 2023. She and her husband of 10 years, screenwriter Ted Griffin, quietly filed for divorce in October 2023. She has one child, Emily Dale Griffin, who was adopted in 2017 with her ex-husband.
