Highly-rated Rangers starlet departs in January loan switch and he’ll be managed by massive Celtic legend

RANGERS have sent one of their top academy graduates on loan for the rest of the season.

And he will be managed by one of Celtic‘s most iconic players.

Cole McKinnon made his Gers debut in 2022 but hasn’t quite forced his way into the first team yet.

The 21-year-old central midfielder has been a regular for the B team over the last 12 months after previous loan spells at East Fife and Partick Thistle.

He has been involved in matchday squads at senior level as a substitute but hasn’t played for the first team this season.

In order to gain experience and game time, Rangers have agreed a deal with Ayr United for McKinnon to go there on loan until the end of the campaign.

That means his new boss will be none other than Hoops hero Scott Brown.

The Celtic legend joined the Somerset Park club at the start of the year, replacing Lee Bullen in Ayrshire.

Brown has former Gers defender Steven Whittaker as his trusted No2 and the Honest Men currently sit second in the Scottish Championship table.

Broony, 39, was of course a midfielder back in his playing days too and McKinnon can no doubt learn a lot from the former Celtic and Scotland captain.

McKinnon’s debut for the Light Blues came in a 3-1 win over Hearts in May 2022, coming on as a sub for Aaron Ramsey.

He scored the third goal that day, one of four senior league goals he’s scored in his career so far.

McKinnon made his European debut for the Ibrox club earlier this year, playing the final 15 minutes of the thrilling 2-2 draw with Benfica in the Europa League last-16.

Meanwhile, Rangers B beat Celtic 3-1 yesterday in their Glasgow Cup group stage clash.
