Many fans are probably not aware that Peter Dinklage, the actor who rose to fame for his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, used to sing in a punk band back in the early ‘90s. In fact, the scar on his head came from a little accident while performing onstage.
Widely recognized for his height due to a case of dwarfism, the actor defies all expectations as he is brimming with so much talent and colossal passion for the performing arts. Indeed, he continues to impress the public.
Peter Dinklage reminisced his time singing for a punk band
Peter Dinklage sang for the group Whizzy which blended ‘90s punk, rap, and funk. Even though he no longer pursues this activity, music remains a huge part of his life. At the time, the actor admitted he was pretty angry—which is a very common attitude of rockstars especially when performing.
Recalling his days as Whizzy’s frontman, he told The New Yorker magazine that they were punks who didn’t play punk rock. His bandmates were a couple of friends from Columbia and Bennington, Vermont. “We got together, and we just drank too much and played the old CBGB’s.”
Dinklage confessed he had a lot of fun during those glorious band days, but he was more of a dilettante—someone who cultivates an area of interest without real commitment—as compared to his bandmates who were real musicians. Still, they had an audience, although he regrets one thing about it.
We had a following, but our following was, like, progressive rock. It was all guys. For some reason, just dudes came to our shows. I felt a little bit, like, what’s the point of being in a rock band if there’s no ladies?
Indeed, where’s the fun if only guys can enjoy their music? As per Columbia Spectator’s review of the band published in 1993, they called the group “a spectacle of sardonic, yet optimistic folly to which you can’t help but dance.” Unfortunately, the location of their performance wasn’t something girls would like to go to as the newspaper described it as a “warehouse-type artist’s studio basement scene party that smelled like stanky thick beer and wet leather.”
Peter Dinklage continues to embrace his love for music
Dinklage doesn’t have to worry about ladies not attending his live performances as he’s now ventured into musical shows. Right after Game of Thrones, the actor starred in 2019’s Cyrano, the musical version of the classic French play Cyrano de Bergerac.
It’s no longer a surprise to fans that he can truly sing as Dinklage was also part of the Wicked cast. He portrayed Doctor Dillamond and performed the iconic Something Bad song with Cynthia Erivo.
Hopefully, he’ll pursue his passion for music in the future and explore different genres. Dinklage said that he goes for whatever inspires him, and there are certainly lots of opportunities for him out there.
