‘I’ll never forget him’ – Heartache as family confirm funeral details of young man, 20s, killed in horror Kerry crash

THE funeral details for a young man in Kerry who died in a horror early morning crash at the weekend have been announced.

Sean Scanlon, who was in his 20s, died in hospital following the collision in Ballinskelligs, Co Kerry at around 2am on Sunday.

Gardai and emergency services responded to the scene, which was a single-vehicle crash involving a van at Kilurly.

Sean was seriously injured and rushed by ambulance to University Hospital Kerry, but later passed away.

Two other occupants of the van were assessed at the scene but did not require hospital treatment.

Sean will repose in Dalys Funeral Home in Cahersiveen on Friday, November 22 from 5pm to 8pm.

He will arrive to St Michael the Archangel Church in Dungegan, Ballinskelligs on Saturday, November 23 for Requiem Mass at 12.30pm.

His burial will take place afterwards in Kinnard Cemetary.

His death notice reads: “The death has occured of Sean Scanlon, Clochan an Uagh, Ballinskelligs, Kerry.

“Loved son of Liz, adored brother of Darragh, Callum, Ellie and Michael.

“Sadly missed by his heartbroken family – his mother, brothers, sister, nanny, aunts, cousins, extended family, neighbours and a wide circle of friends especially the Goggins.”

Family and friends flooded the online book of condolences with tributes to the “pure gentleman” who was a “privilege and honour” to call a friend.


One person wrote: “I was fortunate enough to meet Sean this year during the summer we spent together in Boston.

“I have nothing but good things to say about Sean, he always made me feel welcome.

“I’ll never forget Sean or the moments I was lucky enough to share with him.

“My thoughts are with his family and friends. Rip Sean.”

‘HEARTFELT SYMPATHY’

Another added: “Our heartfelt sympathy to you all on the devastating death of your darling Sean.

“Having known Sean all his life, it is a privilege and an honour to call him our dear friend.

“May God give you strength in the very difficult days ahead. Rest in peace dear Sean.”

While one said: “Sincere sympathy to the Scanlon family on Sean’s untimely passing.

‘PURE GENTLEMAN’

“A pure gentleman with a lovely smile. We got to know Sean through his work.

“May you rest in peace Sean . You will be very much missed.”

Tributes were paid to Sean by local community groups , who said he was “taken from us too soon”.

St Michael’s/Foilmore GAA Club posted on Facebook: “St. Michaels Foilmore GAA Club is in mourning at the untimely death of our player, friend, and colleague Sean Scanlon.

“Sean’s passing has devastated all our club members and has cast a gloom over Ballinskelligs and Foilmore.

‘THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS’

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his Mom Liz, Sister Ellie, Brothers Daragh, Calum and Mikey, Nannie Eileen, Aunties, Clare, Bernie and the extended Doyle and Scanlon families.

“Taken from us too soon Sean. May your gentle soul rest in eternal peace.”

Gardai are still appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward and any road users with dash-cam footage from the area at the time of the incident are also asked to contact investigating officers.
