Mom-shamers never seem to take a break, finding fault with every little thing. Jenna Dewan’s been at the center of it many times (like when she received hate for sharing breastfeeding photos with her now-5-month-old daughter Rhiannon, who she shares with fiancé Steve Kazee), and her latest post brought them out in full force once again. The professional dancer took her preteen daughter Everly on a mother-daughter date, and people slammed her for the apparently controversial outing.
The Rookie star shared a video of her and her 11-year-old daughter, who she shares with ex-husband Channing Tatum, on Instagram on Tuesday, where the duo was attending Sabrina Carpenter’s Short and Sweet Tour. Everyone whose been to the concert or seen TikToks of the “Espresso” singer’s show know that she always acts out a *ahem* intimate act on stage during her performance of “Juno,” so like any protective mom would do, Dewan covered her daughter’s eyes during that part of the concert.
“pov- you take your preteen to the Sabrina Carpenter concert and it’s THAT part of the show,” she wrote on a video posted to Instagram on Tuesday. The clip shows Dewan covering her daughter’s eyes with her hand as Everly waits patiently for it to be over. (To be fair, she probably knew what was happening, but still. You gotta try to keep your kids innocent as long as you can, right?)
Still, some people apparently think you should raise kids in a bubble and never expose them to anything mildly inappropriate ever. “Pretty bad parenting here. Why would you subject your child to an adult environment like that??” one rude person wrote. Someone else said, “Why are people bringing their underage kids to an explicit concert? Like yeah sure cover her eyes but she will literally Google it later.”
“Hi! You’re a bad parent! Hope that helps ! The show is not for an 11 year old !” another judgily commented. Because apparently we can’t have nuance or different parenting opinions or even a sex-positive parenting philosophy, right? People acting like they know what’s best for her and her daughter makes me see red. Just because you wouldn’t take your 11-year-old to this concert, doesn’t mean no one can take their kids!
Luckily, many other people saw this for what it was: the move of a loving, caring, good mom. “Y’all are the best 😂👏🎶✨💖” one person commented. Someone else said, “Good for you for being prepared and not complaining afterwards!”
“I alerted/warned my 14 year old daughter right before Mötley Crüe came on stage (she loves their music & I couldn’t pass up the chance to see them in concert in my home state) that there’ll be things you’re gonna see and hear and I’m not covering your eyes n’ ears because it happens in an instant 😂 It wasn’t ‘that’ bad til Tommy came up to the mic 🎤 😂 Great time was had nevertheless 🤘🏻 🎸 🎶 🔥” someone else commented.
Another person shared, “Love this! I still remember seeing Janet Jackson when I was probably around this age and my mom covering my sister’s and my eyes for a particularly risqué part 😆”
It doesn’t seem like Dewan was affected by all the hate comments. The Step Up alum, who is also mom to 4-year-old son Callum with Kazee, shared more moments from the show on her Instagram story, including a selfie of her and Everly with glitter freckles and sparkles in their hair and a video of Everly dancing. “Seeing her have so much fun made my heart explode,” Dewan wrote over one video.
“Best date night 🥹” she captioned another video of her and Everly dancing.
It looks like they had a wonderful time, and everyone who is mean is probably just mad they don’t have as close a relationship with their own kids (or that they couldn’t get tickets to the sold-out show). Good for Dewan not letting the haters get in the way of this sweet core memory with her daughter!
