The Unforgivable Reason Why Yoko Taro Couldn’t Add S*x Scene Between 2B and 9S in Nier: Automata Anime

Yoko Taro is one of the famed directors in the gaming industry. From Drakengard to Voice of Cards, Taro has written compelling screenplays for notable games. Moreover, he has also been actively involved in game design.

His recent project is the animated adaptation of the Nier: Automata game series. The series looks more than promising with its excellent visuals and storytelling. Despite its pros, the series isn’t spared from its fair share of troubles.

In an interview, Taro opened up about an intimate scene being turned down in the series. To be honest, fans weren’t really happy about this. Most viewers and gamers took to the Internet to express their rage and disappointment.

Moreover, this highlights a major problem in the anime industry. Despite the directors having their IP studios and corporations put a spoke in the artist’s wheel.

S*x scene censorship in Yoko Taro’s series

Yoko Taro is a celebrated name in the gaming industry. As a scenario writer and video game director, Taro has worked on innumerable projects. Some of his notable works include DrakengardVoice of Cards, and Nier.

Nier is set in a dystopian and post-apocalyptic setting where androids and aliens walk the earth. The story highlights the journey of two androids 2B and 9S as they prepare for a proxy war.

Like the game, the series is praised for its exceptional soundtrack. Not only that, it also brings out the dark and disturbing elements in the game. While one would assume creative liberty with the animated series, Taro felt otherwise.

In his attempts to add an intimate scene between 9S and 2B, Taro was quashed by Aniplex. This angered most fans online on X.

While it may seem absurd, this isn’t the first time an animated series underwent censorship and crackdown.

Nier: Automata outdoes itself in most aspects

While Nier: Automata may not be as popular or hyped up as other anime, it shines in its own way. Through Taro’s exceptional writing and screenplay, the series highlights his brilliance.

The animation would remind one of the early 2000s mecha series. A-1 Pictures left no stone unturned in creating a faithful adaptation. But there’s more to it considering the collective efforts of Taro and A-1 Pcitures.

What sets it apart from other series is its voice cast along with high production quality. Yui Ishikawa, who is popular for voicing Mikasa Ackerman in Attack on Titan, stars as 2B.

Besides that, the series retains most of the gore and explicit scenes from the video game. Barring the s*x scene controversy, the anime is nothing short of an underrated gem.

Despite Aniplex’s restraints, Taro proved his brilliance through this animated adaptation. As a seasoned screenwriter, he succeeded in bringing out a faithful adaptation in more ways than one.

Nier: Automata is available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
