The legal team of disgraced rapper Diddy accused the prosecutors of his case of unlawfully seizing personal materials such as notes he wrote by hand while detained inside Manhattan jail. His lawyers are requesting that the issue be addressed.
The rap mogul was arrested last September for charges of s*x trafficking, racketeering conspiracy, and transportation to engage in prostitution. He has been denied bail twice and pleaded not guilty to all allegations.
Defense Team Calls for Explanation on Prosecutors’ Unlawful Collection of Materials from Diddy’s Room
Diddy’s team has sent a letter to US District Judge Arun Subramanian requesting an immediate hearing and demanding the prosecutors explain the improper search of Diddy’s bed area, personal things, and paperwork.
As per Newsweek, the prosecutors accused the rapper of “concealing communications from jail and running social media campaigns” to leak information that might help his case. The outlet revealed he allegedly contacted witnesses via third parties.
In the same letter, the rapper’s legal team wrote that the prosecutors are aware that they are in possession of “possibly privileged materials”. On the other hand, the latter assured the defense that these materials would be reviewed by an independent government agency so as to avoid any client-lawyer communications.
Diddy’s team argued in the letter that these seized materials were actively being used to detain him. They called this action an “outrageous government conduct” which they claim is a violation of substantive due process.
The 55-year-old hitmaker also appeared at a conference with his legs shackled. His lawyers have made a last-minute request to allow their client to attend court unshackled as it has a profound setback on his ability to communicate with his counsel. They also claimed that the shackles degrade the defendant, and it also subverts his presumption of innocence.
An immediate hearing has been requested for the discussion on the unlawful collection of Diddy’s personal items and search of his cell. He has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York since his arrest two months ago.
Diddy’s Case is Reportedly Severe and He May Spend Life in Prison If Proven Guilty
Diddy might face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment if convicted following multiple lawsuits accusing him of s*xual assault, notably pointing to his secret enterprise allegedly involving coercion of others into carnal acts during his wild celebrity-filled freak-off parties.
His lawyers have been trying to advocate for his release on bail but he has been denied bail twice. A third bail hearing is currently scheduled for Friday. Diddy is currently awaiting trial on May 5, 2025.
According to a New York lawyer uninvolved in the case (via US Weekly), the charges against the embattled rapper are “severe” and he could “expect to spend most of his remaining life behind bars.” At this point, it remains unknown if the requested immediate hearing will impact the bail hearing.
