Users on social media have been sharing their love for the nostalgic 2000’s festive vibe this year.
Festive fans on TikTok have been saying they can’t get enough of the style, with one user posting: “Tacky Christmas isn’t tacky and if tacky is wrong, I don’t want to be right”.
And now one interior designer has revealed the ways we can decorate our homes after noticing the huge shift in style preferences for the festive season.

“From maximalist trees to supersized decorations and throwing it back to the disco era with pops of glitz, glamour, and bright colours – tacky is SO back.

Red and gold, not beige and cold
One simple, classic, yet elegant way to bring tacky Christmas into your home is by decorating with red and gold baubles.
It is an easy and stylish way to pay homage to the 2000s Christmas vibe.
Ola says: “If you think back to your childhood Christmases, your memories will probably be a warm and fuzzy haze full of twinkling rainbow lights, mismatched baubles and vibrant colours and glitter.
“And red decorations can be used to bring this feeling back whilst still being on-trend.
“Opt for red baubles for your tree, complemented with glitzy gold accents to add some style and depth.”
Maximalism is in, minimalism is out
Gone are the days of sparse, understated Christmas decorations, the experts have revealed.
This year it’s all about the more, the merrier and layering our decor with lots of different textures, colours, and shapes.
They suggest: “Start with your tree as the focal point.
“Think oversized baubles, lush garlands, and ornaments that don’t necessarily ‘match’ but bring a sense of joyful chaos.
“Add glittering ribbons and vintage lights to create a bold, statement tree that’s a visual feast.
“Don’t forget to decorate other areas of the home too: we’re talking mantelpieces, doorways, windows, and even stair railings can all get the maximalist treatment!”

- Novelty Decorations – These also lack timelessness and therefore are a poor investment.

- Overdecorating – Following a less-is-more approach is key to achieving a beautiful home for Christmas.
- Lighting – While colourful lights in white, red, blue, or green may seem festive, they can often make your home look cheap.
