‘Only way it’ll be fair’ – Amanda Serrano demands rule change for Katie Taylor trilogy as she repeats head-butting claim

AMANDA SERRANO will only fight Katie Taylor a third time if there is a major rule change – claiming ‘it will be the only way it will be fair’.

Serrano, 36, lost to the Irishwoman via unanimous decision last Friday night for what was her second defeat to Taylor.

Despite this, there has already been talk of a trilogy between the two, with both fighters and KT’s promoter Eddie Hearn talking up the possibility.

However, Serrano has called for a third fight to be across 12, three-minute rounds, saying it would be the only way for it to be fair.

The Puerto Rican has been a staunch advocate of women’s boxing using 12×3, and beat Danila Ramos in October 2023 via unanimous decision in the extended format.

Asked if the result in Texas was fair, she told CBS Mornings: “Listen, I didn’t know — there was a lot of headbutting going on and a lot of holding going on.

“I’m just happy that we were able to perform on this platform and millions of people saw what they saw.

“I believe I won the fight which means we have to go for the third fight.

“I’m 100% interested (in a third fight), she said she is.

“The only way I feel like it will be fair is if we go under the men’s rules which is three minutes and 12 rounds.

“She agreed to it so let’s see if she’ll take the fight.”

Despite all four judges scoring the fight 95-94 in Taylor’s favour, the result was booed by the AT&T Stadium.

Netflix commentator Mauro Ranallo claimed that it was a “robbery” while actress Rosie Perez said it would put an “asterisk” on the 2012 Olympic gold medallist’s legacy.

Serrano was left with a gruesome gash over her right eye following a clash of heads in the fourth round and another in the eighth which led to Taylor being deducted a point.

After the fight, the four-division world champion’s team accused Taylor of “cheating” while Serrano herself suggested the Bray Bomber had head-butted her intentionally.

She apologised for the accusation on social media the next day but, speaking to CBS Mornings, accused Taylor of excessive head-butted.

She added: “It was excessive from headbutting and excessive holding.

“We had warned the referee beforehand when we was in the locker room that that’s what she does.

“We fought her before and we knew that’s what she does. She likes to come in with her head.

“I’m not saying it was done intentionally but knowing the way Katie fights, that’s how she fights.

“So we just warned the referee beforehand and he said don’t worry, he’ll handle it, and obviously he didn’t handle it as good as he was supposed to.”
